At about 11:40 p.m. on October 30, 2024, the Police Air Wing tracked a blue Subaru Impreza driving recklessly along the Mitchell Freeway near Osborne Park. It was stopped at Reid Highway allegedly travelling at 200km/hr in a 100km/hr zone.
Transcript
00:00I stand before you again after a night of activity by the road policing command, the
00:04police air wing and the canine section.
00:07So yesterday I reported that a grey BMW was caught 194 and 100 zone Tonkin Highway where
00:14we know there's been two other fatals and a serious crash.
00:17The driver of that vehicle has been charged, the vehicle's been impounded and he's had
00:21his licence for two months and he's owned the car for a week.
00:25Next to that you can see the Subaru, that was caught travelling at high speed on the
00:32Mitchell Freeway northbound.
00:33It was observed by the police helicopter who tracked it, it was then intercepted by a canine.
00:38That was travelling at 205 as its maximum speed in a 100 kilometre hour zone.
00:44Again Peaplate driver has had his licence for 14 months, this is of concern to us that
00:49inexperienced or novice drivers are driving at these speeds.
00:53So I don't want to just demonise the young drivers because next to that you'll see a
00:57Lamborghini which was seized on Great Southern Highway in Whittaning, travelling in excess
01:02of 90 kilometres over the limit.
01:04Now the owner of that vehicle was charged, he's been to court, he's lost his licence
01:07for six months.
01:09We went for forfeiture so when the speed is 90 kilometres or over we can go for forfeiture.
01:14Unfortunately we didn't win that in court but the magistrates all fit that the owner
01:17of that vehicle should lose his car for a further three months and that's why it's out
01:21here today.
01:22So my message again, it's not just the young and it's not just the old, it's everybody
01:26on the road needs to take care for their own responsibility, drive to the conditions and
01:31drive to the survive.
01:32It was only two Saturdays ago I did a similar media interview from Oran Road where a car
01:38full of young men, six young men in a car crashed, three of them died immediately, two
01:42of them are still in the hospital with serious injuries and the life of a 22 year old promising
01:48young lad has changed forever.
01:51I'll tell you last month, 56 people were charged with driving in excess of 40 kilometres an
01:57hour over the limit so it highlights this is a continual problem, that was just for
02:00last month so this is an ongoing problem where people are significantly exceeding the speed
02:05limit and they are going to end up facing court, they're going to lose their licence
02:09and they're going to lose their vehicle.
