Raye has had quite the few years. She left her record label and decided to make the music she wanted to make. She has been very open about her past struggles and sat down with a heart-to-heart chat with legend, Louis Theroux and says she isn't going to rush anything next year as she needs the life experience. 00:00 Full circle moment. You were here with the Ladies in Blue six years ago.
00:04 No, I was saying I literally remember talking to this beautiful woman, literally right there,
00:09 and you look just as beautiful as ever. It's lovely to see you again.
00:12 No, you do, and I'm so proud of you. Just sum up your 2023, girl.
00:18 Honestly, it's just like, I don't know, I'm stuck. I wear the words. It's just that dreams come true, you know?
00:31 It's so cheesy that I said that. I just reflect on the girl that I felt like I was when I stood over there,
00:38 like six years ago, you know what I mean? I have a 20-minute slot today. I get to do a piano moment.
00:46 You know what I mean? No, it's crazy.
00:50 -And those shoes on. I love that. -No, that don't give a f. I'm vibing.
00:54 And we also talked throughout lockdown on Zoom. I think you were moving house one day,
00:58 and you were chatting to me on the stairs. I mean, you really have come so far,
01:02 and the Royal Albert Hall must be a moment that you'll never forget, and the whole world gets to see it.
01:08 BBC, just talk to me about that whole gig.
01:12 It is the proudest moment of my life. I love you. I love that girl so much.
01:22 Yeah, proudest moment of my life, absolutely. In the whole thing, my face is like this.
01:29 I was just, yeah, I really got to have a moment of dreams. I got to perform an album of my dreams
01:34 with a 90-piece musician orchestra, Heritage Orchestra, Flames Collective.
01:42 Are you joking? It was crazy, and now BBC are like, yeah, we're going to put it on TV.
01:47 Huh? 3rd of January, alright?
01:50 What's your friends and family said about this? Because they've been through you, through with you,
01:54 the whole thing. Are they as super proud as we are of you?
01:57 They are so proud of me, you know, and I think it's just, you know, every musician knows how tough it is
02:04 in the industry, like behind the scenes, you know, how you really have to just keep going,
02:09 and I'm just so glad I did. I'm so lucky that I got a second chance to redraw my artistry and start afresh.
02:17 I feel respected and seen, which is such a beautiful feeling.
02:21 Yeah.
02:22 So, yeah, what a year.
02:23 I'm proud of that, so.
02:25 Where did that- What on earth happened? That's just crazy, innit?
02:28 That was like four years old, maybe that song. TikTok is just a really crazy gift that just keeps on giving,
02:34 really, to me. Yeah.
02:36 And as if you haven't had a good enough 2023, you got to meet Louis Verru.
02:41 Did you fangirl just for like a minute before you started filming?
02:44 Do you know what's actually hilarious, yeah? When I did my first support tour, I was opening for Jess Clinn,
02:48 and I used to wear t-shirts, and one had David Attenborough on it, and one had Louis Verru on it.
02:53 I had not a clue. I used to just do one piece of mascara and just get out on stage in a Louis Verru t-shirt,
02:58 like, 'Hello, I'm opening. I'm an artist.'
03:00 What a full circle moment. What an absolutely lovely human being. I'm so grateful he took the time to get to know me
03:07 and zoom in on my story.
03:09 But the line-up he's had this series is quite remarkable.
03:14 I love that he chatted to you. Did you have lots of feedback from there?
03:18 I did, actually. Do you know, I was absolutely bricking it the entire day before it came out,
03:23 because I've realised something. I think I've slightly adjusted to the feeling.
03:27 We still get nervous, but I've adjusted to the feeling of putting music out, right?
03:29 It's kind of like a version of yourself or what you choose to share, but I think with that,
03:34 it's like all the cracks, all the details, it's unfiltered, and it's my personality, you know?
03:39 It's not just my music. So I was worried. I was worried. I was nervous.
03:44 But I'm glad. I've got good feedback and good stuff.
03:48 And next year, just tell me what's happening.
03:50 Next year, I'm working on something musically that I'm really excited about.
03:55 But this is what I realised. I don't want to... I think this is a tough thing.
04:00 I could talk for England, innit? But I think this is a tough thing with music.
04:03 Momentum is good, but you can't make great music if you haven't lived.
04:08 You know what I mean? I've worked really hard this year.
04:11 I think I need to take some time off, heal my voice up. It's a bit croaky.
04:15 - You're better now? - Yeah. No, not 100%.
04:18 I've got a husk. Maybe it'll stay. Maybe it'll go.
04:20 - So are they. - Do you know what I mean? Who knows?
04:22 Maybe I'll embrace it. Who knows?
04:24 Yeah, because you cancelled those gigs, didn't you? That was sad.
04:26 Well, we postponed them. I'm literally announcing new dates on next week.
04:30 - So happy for you. So proud of you. - Thank you. Thank you so much.
04:33 - Good luck with your island. - Thank you.
04:34 Alright, darling. Speak to you soon.
