00:02 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best movie plot twists
00:08 seen between 2014 and 2023. We'll only include live-action films. It also isn't a twist that
00:16 there will be big spoilers. "To fake a convincing murder you have to have discipline."
00:20 Number 10. Adelaide is the doppelganger. Us. "There was another girl in there."
00:27 "She looked like me. Exactly like me."
00:35 This horror film began with a young Adelaide having a terrifying encounter with her doppelganger.
00:41 So, we understood why the protagonist was horrified to see her sinister double again
00:45 over 30 years later. But it turned out we didn't know Adelaide as well as we thought.
00:51 In the film's final minutes, it's revealed that the protagonist we were following the entire time
00:56 was actually the doppelganger. "I never stopped thinking about you. How things could have been.
01:05 How you could have taken me with you." It turned out the double locked Adelaide away and assumed
01:13 her identity when they were kids. This twist immediately made us want to go back and re-watch
01:18 the film for clues of this turn. "My whole life I've...I felt like she's still coming for me."
01:29 But more importantly, the reveal made it impossible for us to say who was the true
01:34 hero and unquestionable villain of Us. Number 9. Tyler knew about the deadly dinner. The menu.
01:42 Margot thought the pretentious Tyler had just hired her to attend an extravagant meal.
01:47 Unfortunately for her, the head chef running the dinner had made plans to kill every one of his
01:52 guests. "Let me live?" "Let you live? No. Of course not. Can't you see that that had ruined the menu?"
02:01 While his murderous intent was surprising on its own, viewers were hit with another
02:05 appalling confession after the killing started. It's revealed that Tyler always knew about the
02:10 sinister nature of this dinner. The admission that he hired Margot just to guarantee he could
02:15 attend the fatal meal enraged both her and the audience. "That's just because you don't offer
02:19 seating for one." "So you hired her knowing she died?" "Yes." "I don't need that!" Although Chef
02:31 Sloic is still the biggest villain of the movie, Tyler was more malicious than we could have ever
02:36 expected. Thankfully, the despicable man got his just desserts in the end. "You are why the mystery
02:44 has been drained from our art. You see that now, don't you?" "Sorry, Chicago."
02:52 In this sci-fi movie, a programmer named Caleb is asked to test to see if a robot with artificial
03:09 intelligence named Ava could pass as human. During their talks, she keeps hinting that her creator
03:15 Nathan is an evil jailer. A sympathetic Caleb decides to betray the human who made Ava so she
03:20 can escape. "Caleb, you have to help me." "I'm going to. We're getting out of here tonight."
03:28 After the AI successfully kills her creator, it looked like she'd walk away into the sunset with
03:33 her human ally. But Ava decided to lock Caleb away while she escaped into the real world alone.
03:39 This cruel twist allowed the AI to move among humanity without anyone suspecting a thing.
03:49 Meanwhile, Caleb realized that he failed a test he didn't even know he was taking.
03:55 Number 7. Harlan Never Had To Die - Knives Out. "You know, I don't fear death. But oh God,
04:03 I'd like to fix some of this before I go." While many murder mysteries wait until the last second
04:10 to expose the villain, one winding tale took a different approach. Around 40 minutes into
04:15 Knives Out, a flashback showed the kind nurse Marta accidentally giving her patient Harlan
04:20 a fatal dose of morphine. He then decides to take his own life so she wouldn't be accused of murder.
04:25 "Now if what you said is true, I'm gone. There's no saving me. We have six minutes.
04:30 We have got to get you out of this." After covering up this incident,
04:35 Marta learns that she was 100% guiltless. It's revealed that Harlan's grandson Ransom tried to
04:41 trick the nurse into administering too much morphine. However, Marta had given her patient
04:46 the right medication all along. "You gave him the correct medication because you are a good nurse."
04:53 "Then Harlan was..." "I'm sorry Marta, but yes, Harlan was perfectly fine."
05:01 This stunning turn instantly made Harlan's death hit harder. His senseless death elevated what
05:07 could have been another murder mystery into a tragic tale for the ages.
05:16 "My mother was a very secretive and private woman. She had private rituals, private friends,
05:23 private anxieties." Shortly after Annie Graham's mysterious mother Ellen died,
05:29 she lost her daughter Charlie. The matriarch finally found comfort after she met a woman
05:34 named Joan. This new ally even showed Annie how to reach her deceased daughter in the afterlife.
05:39 "First, light the candle, then choose an item that belonged to your daughter.
05:44 That would be your link. Mine was the chalkboard. That's my link. It's all right, it's all right."
05:51 Unfortunately for Annie, conducting a second seance kicks off a series of horrifying
05:56 supernatural events. In the midst of their suffering, Mrs. Graham realizes that her
06:00 friend Joan had ill intentions the whole time. This new ally also happened to be part of a
06:05 coven that Annie's mom used to lead. These twin revelations made the story even more
06:10 compelling and tragic than it had been. No matter what the Grahams did, they were always doomed to
06:16 suffer. "I know you don't trust me and there is nothing I can do about that. But they put a curse
06:21 on us when we brought Charlie back. We made a pact with something. Something that is in this house,
06:26 I don't know what it is." Number five. Hydra agents hid within SHIELD. Captain America,
06:31 the Winter Soldier. "Hydra died with the red scar." "Cut off one head, two more shall take its place."
06:38 "Prove it." Although this spy thriller is full of terrific twists, its biggest swerve impacted an
06:44 entire universe of movies. The massive turn occurs after Captain America learns that there may be a
06:50 traitor hiding in the heroic organization SHIELD. After some investigation, he learns that villainous
06:56 Hydra operatives have been planted at virtually every level of the good agency. "The new Hydra
07:01 grew a beautiful parasite inside SHIELD. For 70 years, Hydra has been secretly feeding crisis."
07:13 Cap is then forced to break SHIELD apart to expose the evil lurking within. After this plot point
07:18 made Winter Soldier more thrilling, Hydra agents reared their ugly heads in other Marvel projects.
07:24 The excellent reveal ensured that we would think twice before trusting anyone in this universe
07:29 again. "Strike and Insight crew are Hydra as well. I don't know how many more, but I know they're in
07:35 the building. They could be standing right next to you." Number four. The hidden house guest, Parasite.
07:55 It was hilarious to see members of the Kim family lie and get multiple people fired so they could
07:59 all work at a wealthy home. But we got concerned when a recently let go housekeeper named Moon Kwon
08:05 returned to the rich home to get something from the basement. As it turned out, she had placed her
08:10 husband in a secret bunker under the house so he could hide from debt collectors.
08:15 This extremely sudden character debut set off a series of progressively darker twists that shaped
08:20 the rest of the film. It also completely shifted the tone of the movie from a con artist comedy
08:26 to a tense social thriller. After we descended into that basement, we were set down a path of no return.
08:33 Number three. Amy was never in danger. Gone Girl.
08:38 When Amy Dunn goes missing, she's the only one who can be found. And that's because she's the only one who can be found.
08:44 When Amy Dunn goes missing, her husband Nick seems clueless as to what could have happened. A series of flashbacks then shows us that there's no way she could have been found.
08:50 Number three. Amy was never in danger. Gone Girl.
08:54 When Amy Dunn goes missing, her husband Nick seems clueless as to what could have happened.
09:10 A series of flashbacks then shows us that there were deep cracks in their marriage.
09:15 As evidence piles up against Nick, we begin to suspect he wasn't as innocent as he seemed.
09:20 But everything changes around the halfway point of the film. Suddenly, it's revealed that Amy is
09:26 completely fine.
09:27 As an added kick to the gut, she's been framing her husband for her disappearance to get back at him.
09:42 This pivotal story beat throws everything we've seen into question, while making us hungry to
09:46 discover why Amy would concoct such a horrific scheme. Her sudden re-emergence ensured we'd be
09:52 glued to the screen up until the very end.
09:55 After a black man named Chris arrives at the white Armitage home, he finds himself at the center of
10:10 several anxiety-inducing incidents.
10:12 He eventually reaches a breaking point and convinces girlfriend Missy to leave the house.
10:23 But she decides not to give him the keys and leaves him to her vicious family.
10:28 It's only after Missy's shocking betrayal that we learn that the Armitages plan to implant
10:32 another person's consciousness into Chris's body.
10:35 "So you won't be gone. Not completely. A sliver of you will still be in there,
10:40 somewhere. Limited consciousness."
10:42 Additionally, we're told that the black characters we saw around the family home
10:46 already suffered that terrible fate. This game-changing story beat made every scene that
10:51 came before feel more sinister. Get Out became a much more horrifying experience once you knew
10:57 Chris's instincts were dead on.
10:59 "You'll be me."
11:00 "Good."
11:02 "Good. You got it quick."
11:05 "Good on you."

11:21 Number 1. Louise can travel through time.
11:26 Arrival
11:27 "I know something that's going to happen.
11:28 I can't explain how I know it, just do."
11:33 Throughout the sci-fi film, protagonist Louise keeps seeing increasingly vivid memories of a
11:39 daughter she tragically lost to disease. At the same time, the professional has to learn an alien
11:45 language to communicate with extraterrestrials. These two plot points finally intersected when
11:50 Louise privately talked to an alien. After witnessing another vivid memory in front of
11:54 the extraterrestrial, Louise reveals that she never had a daughter.
11:58 "I don't understand. Who is this child?"
12:02 It was then explained that her visions of her child were flash-forwards. Louise could peek
12:07 into the future because the alien language she learned allowed her to move her mind through time.
12:12 Unless you were Louise herself, there's no way you saw this brilliant reversal coming.
12:18 The twist enhanced the story, enriched the characters, and left us completely stunned.
12:24 "If you could see your whole life from start to finish,
12:26 would you change things?"

12:35 "I told him something that he wasn't ready to hear."
