Drenching rain and damaging winds are on the way for millions of Americans from the Gulf Coast to New England this weekend.

00:00 We've seen a lot of trouble in the northwest.
00:02 Now the disturbance from the northwest
00:03 is crossing the Rockies tonight.
00:05 We're going to get into some trouble
00:07 at the very end of the week.
00:08 Friday night.
00:09 John, this causes trouble into the Ozarks.
00:11 Yes, here's page #1 from Springfield
00:13 to Fort Smith to Little Rock, Arkansas.
00:15 Look for gusty thunderstorms
00:17 and the risk for a few tornadoes.
00:19 That's the first Jeff of
00:20 multiple days of severe weather,
00:22 and I know that our concern escalates
00:24 as we get into areas a little farther
00:26 east, partly because this is going
00:28 to tap into a greater amount of Gulf moisture.
00:31 So John, here we have Friday night
00:33 when those storms start getting
00:34 going into places like Arkansas.
00:36 But beyond that time frame,
00:37 what are we concerned about on Saturday?
00:40 Well, we're going to have an
00:41 intensifying storm system at the
00:43 same time plentiful moisture from
00:44 the Gulf of Mexico surging northward.
00:46 So that means we're going to be
00:48 dealing with a line of thunderstorms
00:50 across parts of the Mississippi
00:52 Valley into the Ohio Valley.
00:53 Lots of wind with this as well,
00:56 and localized flash flooding
00:57 concerns and each day as the
00:59 system continues to move to the east,
01:01 we're going to be dealing
01:02 with further problems as well.
01:04 And regarding some of those
01:05 severe weather hazards late Saturday,
01:07 Saturday afternoon, Saturday night,
01:08 where and what are we looking at?
01:10 Well, one of the things we want to
01:12 point out is look at how far north
01:14 the severe weather risk can be all
01:16 the way up for those gusty thunderstorms,
01:19 which can cause localized wind
01:20 damage into parts of Indiana and Ohio.
01:22 But further South,
01:23 that's where we get to concern from
01:25 Memphis to Jackson to West to Birmingham.
01:28 Of the risk for isolated tornadoes and
01:30 also gusty thunderstorm winds that
01:31 can cause some damage as well.
01:33 So this is a large part of the
01:35 central and southern part of the
01:36 United States at risk here as we
01:38 head through Saturday and then
01:39 as we move forward into Sunday,
01:41 we're going to have some gusty squalls,
01:43 gusty thunderstorms.
01:44 Are we expecting lightning and what are
01:46 the biggest concerns and risks here?
01:47 There will be some lightning,
01:49 some thunderstorms here from parts
01:50 of southeastern Pennsylvania and
01:51 also New Jersey all the way South
01:53 through the capital and then
01:55 all the way down through the
01:56 Carolinas all the way down to Florida.
01:58 So again,
01:59 a large stretch of the eastern part
02:01 of the country with that risk for
02:03 damaging thunderstorm winds and
02:04 flash flooding concerns as well.
02:06 And Jeff,
02:06 this whole storm system gets some
02:08 extra energy into it here as we
02:10 head through Sunday and especially
02:12 into Sunday night as it sort of
02:14 reintensifies along the East Coast.
02:15 This is going to be an all out
02:18 stormy night along the I-95 corridor
02:20 Sunday night into the first part
02:22 of Monday with damaging winds.
02:23 And the risk for flooding
02:25 rainfall in a lot of spots.
02:27 And these are big cities
02:29 with lots of big airports.
02:30 So our concerns about problems
02:32 at the airports mount here as we
02:34 head through Sunday night into
02:36 Monday morning and where will
02:38 the fiercest of the winds be?
02:39 Well, the heaviest of the winds,
02:41 and that's a winds on order of 60 to 70
02:44 mph located from Atlanta, Canada,
02:46 Downeast, Maine,
02:47 southeastern Massachusetts,
02:48 including Cape Cod portions of Rhode Island,
02:50 Connecticut,
02:50 right out to Long Island and the Jersey
02:53 Coast. That's where there can be.
02:55 Some sporadic power outage concerns
02:56 and also the risk for some damage
02:58 elsewhere in the interior portions
03:00 of New England were expecting wind
03:02 gusts to 50 and 60 mph and gusts to
03:04 40 all the way back to the Great Lakes.
03:07 So that's a lot of the northeastern
03:08 United States where there's a concern
03:10 about gusty winds and localized
03:12 power outages and along with all
03:13 that is going to be a drenching rain event.
03:16 So how much rain do we expect and
03:18 where will the heaviest rainfall?
03:20 The interesting thing about this is
03:21 we're going to only be dealing with
03:23 really probably a five to six hour
03:25 period of rain in any one given
03:27 location across the East,
03:29 but it's going to come down hard
03:31 during that time period.
03:32 Very difficult to travel.
03:33 We're going to be dealing with generally
03:35 one to two inches of rainfall,
03:37 but two to four across northeastern
03:39 Pennsylvania into northern New England.
03:41 That also can cause some flash
03:43 flooding concerns as well.
03:44 So yet again,
03:45 a multifaceted storm and we've got.
03:48 A change to colder conditions on
03:50 the backside of this storm and
03:52 some snow issues there too,
03:54 and we can see that we're highlighting
03:56 some high elevation spots with not
03:57 just one to three inches, but also
03:59 three plus into some of the higher
04:01 elevations of the interior Northeast.
04:03 That's right, it looks like we're
04:04 going to be dealing with cold air
04:06 sweeping in behind the storm system
04:08 with some lingering moisture.
04:09 So that's the recipe for rain changing
04:12 to snow and temperatures falling
04:13 fast across parts of western central
04:15 Pennsylvania, Upstate New York,
04:17 and in northern New England.
04:18 Sunday night and Monday and at
04:20 some places here in the interior,
04:22 a couple of inches to several
04:24 inches of snow will fall.
