00:00 I feel so lucky and so energized to be here with you guys this morning.
00:04 It just feels very, very special to be here for such a wonderful initiative.
00:10 Last summer, I was so fortunate to be part of a film
00:14 that not only received critical acclaim and shattered box office records,
00:18 it became a global phenomenon,
00:20 part of the cultural zeitgeist and turned the world pink,
00:25 while most importantly, empowering women and girls across the globe.
00:30 Greta Gerwig's Barbie.
00:32 And empowering girls is exactly what the Hollywood Reporter
00:39 Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program does.
00:42 Thirteen years ago, as most of you know,
00:45 the Hollywood Reporter and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles
00:49 joined forces to create this pioneering program.
00:52 Now, please join me in watching this brief film about it.
00:56 [CLICKING]
00:57 One, two, three.
01:01 We are Women in Entertainment!
01:04 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:06 In our industry, the personal and the professional are really interconnected.
01:11 The mission is simple.
01:14 You take a woman who's succeeded
01:16 and pair her with a girl who desperately wants to succeed,
01:20 and magic happens.
01:22 The Hollywood Reporter and Big Brothers, Big Sisters
01:25 have come together for many, many years
01:27 to provide young women an opportunity to be exposed
01:30 to a whole host of jobs that women do within the entertainment industry.
01:35 They watch women in powerful positions.
01:37 They watch women lead.
01:39 This is our time, and you made it happen, and you really did.
01:44 And all the girls that are the mentees, they're the future.
01:47 And I know the future is in very good hands when I look at them.
01:53 One of the great things about the mentorship program
01:56 is that the young girls, they're able to go to the offices of these women,
02:00 they're able to connect with them,
02:02 and really get a chance to talk to these women one-on-one.
02:05 As women, to have somebody who helps you figure out things,
02:10 little things, big things, college apps, whatever it is,
02:13 to be able to talk to somebody besides your parents or your peers,
02:16 I think is invaluable for these girls.
02:18 It just clicked.
02:21 I'm able to tell her things, I'm able to give her updates about my life,
02:24 the progress we've been making.
02:25 It's just sweet. Someone I can really talk to and I become close with.
02:29 Having a female role model and a female mentor for young women,
02:35 I think, is extremely important.
02:38 It impacted me far beyond my expectation.
02:43 This is the place where people from different cultures can work together.
02:48 Everyone that I met was so kind, so helpful to me,
02:53 that I never felt excluded.
02:55 This industry still isn't accessible to everyone.
03:00 And it's a program that recognizes that,
03:02 it recognizes that the playing field isn't level,
03:06 and it gives opportunity to people
03:08 who might not even know that these careers exist.
03:11 There are some jobs that I didn't even know existed.
03:15 I was like, "Wait, maybe I could probably do that."
03:18 This has opened my eyes to a whole bunch of ideas
03:21 that my mom even tells me,
03:22 "You're always changing what you want to do."
03:25 I'm like, "It's because I'm exploring new things."
03:28 You don't really know where life is going to lead you.
03:31 And life can be a really great adventure
03:34 when you just keep yourself open to the possibilities.
03:38 And you don't have to be one thing forever.
03:41 I think it's important to know it's possible to have these careers,
03:45 it's possible to work in the film and television industry.
03:48 But I also think it's important to have someone who looks like you
03:52 and maybe sometimes has a similar background to you
03:55 to let you know that it's possible.
03:58 Our backgrounds are very similar, you know.
04:02 Mexican parents, the way we grew up,
04:05 I feel like it just made that connection with her so much stronger
04:08 that in a way she really understands me.
04:11 The way that we're raised as Mexican females
04:14 with really strong mothers is very similar.
04:16 And my mom was the same way.
04:17 She really was focused on education,
04:19 but was always trying to push me to challenge myself.
04:22 And so I saw that similarity between her and how my mom is.
04:26 All the dreams that I have that I couldn't accomplish,
04:30 the fact that I know that she's going through all of those things
04:33 make me really happy and make me feel like I'm part of them.
04:37 Because I see how much she loves being there,
04:40 like how amazing Mitzi is,
04:44 because she learns from her a lot.
04:46 And she says, "Mom, I know what I want to do.
04:50 "I love the passion that Mitzi has for what she does."
04:54 It's just amazing, and I feel very proud.
04:58 We don't have access to those things.
05:00 And the fact that she's there experiencing that,
05:03 it's... I mean, it's beautiful.
05:06 I come from the South Side, South Side from L.A.
05:10 So where I come from, you can always just dream
05:13 about what the future can be like.
05:15 If I can give back to the girls in the situation that I was before,
05:19 I would love to help.
05:20 Or if any way I can provide my assistance to them,
05:23 I would love to, 100%.
05:25 You never have to lose sight of who you are
05:29 and really represent yourself, and you do such a beautiful job of it.
05:33 There's nothing like changing somebody's life forever.
05:38 And it only takes a small gesture.
05:41 It's a phone call.
05:42 It's a few minutes out of your time.
05:45 Yeah, I think we just have really good conversations outside of work.
05:49 You give the best advice.
05:51 When I first met you, I was like, "Wow."
05:53 I just felt this energy where I was like, "I want to be like her."
05:58 She's someone that I already can tell I'm gonna have such a strong bond with.
06:02 -They knew our personalities. -I swear.
06:04 It was like a compatibility match big time.
06:06 She knows this. She's not done with me after this program.
06:09 We will be lifelong friends.
06:11 And I can't wait to see where she goes.
06:13 Almost everybody in Hollywood has some desire to do good.
06:19 Now help them find the way.

28:04 This event is so inspirational and incredible,
28:09 and I feel so lucky to be here.
28:11 Um, all right.
28:14 I'm giving a scholarship
28:17 in my mother Carrie Fisher's name today.
28:20 (applause)
28:22 Which she would love, and she would do a way better speech
28:24 than I'm gonna do, so sorry, Mom.
28:26 Um...
28:28 Most of you probably know Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia,
28:32 or the lady with the space buns
28:34 who killed that worm in good old Star Wars.
28:37 But the Carrie Fisher I knew was not a worm killer.
28:41 She was a bookworm.
28:43 She had stacks of books next to her bed at all times
28:46 and never left home without a book or three in her purse.
28:50 Usually three.
28:52 It was always really weirdly heavy.
28:54 And she even wrote six books of her own.
28:57 Her secret dream was to be a professor at Oxford.
29:01 And since that wasn't a realistic option--
29:03 she didn't even graduate high school--
29:05 she ended up, like, going to Vegas and tap dancing.
29:08 Don't judge her.
29:10 So since that wasn't possible,
29:12 she once told my dad she wanted to have a professor
29:15 follow her around everywhere she went.
29:17 You know, and since that wasn't a realistic option,
29:20 she tried to go to college with me.
29:23 And that definitely wasn't a realistic option.
29:27 No 18-year-old wants their mom
29:29 shacking up in their dorm with them,
29:32 even if they're the worm-killing lady
29:34 from good old Star Wars.
29:36 Anyway, the point is,
29:38 my mom always wished she had more of an education.
29:41 So when my dad and I were talking about
29:44 how she would want us to carry--
29:46 no pun intended, sorry I had to--
29:48 on her legacy education,
29:50 she said, "I'm not going to do it."
29:52 Education was at the top of the list.
29:55 My dad came to this event four years ago
29:57 and gave the first Carrie Fisher scholarship
30:00 to an incredible young woman named Natalie Lopez.
30:03 I think she's here.
30:05 Very exciting.
30:07 And she is now-- hi!
30:10 She is now a senior at LMU
30:13 with a major in film production
30:15 and minors in both business administration
30:18 and Chicano studies.
30:20 (cheers and applause)
30:22 I have more, I have more!
30:24 She is making and starring in her own short films,
30:27 working at a tech startup,
30:29 and she's even the CMO of a skin care startup?
30:32 Like, what?
30:34 As the kids say, she is absolutely killing it.
30:37 (laughter)
30:39 I want to grow up to be her.
30:41 This year we are lucky enough
30:43 to be giving out another Carrie Fisher scholarship
30:45 to another amazing young woman.
30:47 She is a senior at Birmingham High School
30:49 and will be entering Chapman's film and television production program
30:52 next fall.
30:54 She's incredibly independent and super hardworking,
30:57 and I am so excited to see what she will do next.
31:00 Drumroll, I think she might already know
