00:00 Very good morning to you. Morning.
00:02 Hope you're well. Yeah, good, good.
00:04 Can I just check your frustration levels?
00:06 Because having seen what happened on Tuesday night at Wolverhampton Wanderers,
00:09 I imagine your frustration levels must be fairly high at the moment.
00:13 Um, on the moment, but you have to learn to manage this in the job.
00:20 And I always turn it into something productive.
00:24 My way to deal with these things is to get up the next morning and go again.
00:30 But it's an important mindset.
00:32 How do you deal with that with the players?
00:34 Are you talking to them in the dressing room directly after the game?
00:37 Or are you a manager that likes the dust to settle and will maybe analyse that the day after?
00:42 I think you always have a small debrief after the game,
00:48 usually in the dressing room, a couple of minutes, but nothing.
00:52 Sometimes there's a lot to say, sometimes not a lot.
00:55 And then the next day, but always we have another game now on Saturday,
01:00 so it's also leading into that next game.
01:03 And when you've done a review of the game, what stance are you taking with the players?
01:08 Are you having to be very careful with them in terms of their confidence?
01:12 You can't afford to criticise them too strongly.
01:14 What sort of view do you take?
01:16 The way to judge a performance objectively is best after you've done your review.
01:24 So you do your review and you analyse every phase back of the game.
01:29 And I'd say at the start of the season there were so many correction moments,
01:34 so many working points, things that we really needed to solve on the training ground.
01:38 And as you go through the review of the last games,
01:41 in many occasions there's a good blueprint, a good template of things that they're actually starting to do well at this level.
01:48 The result, rightly so, takes the prominent place in everything we do,
01:55 and therefore you can't make certain mistakes.
01:57 But in terms of the game flow and what they do, and objectively speaking,
02:02 the team's been on par with a lot of the teams we've faced recently,
02:06 but we have to bring it over the line now.
02:08 In terms of injuries, how's Luka?
02:11 He came off after just half an hour.
02:13 It's bad news for us.
02:15 He's going to be out for a while apparently.
02:17 We'll do everything we can, obviously, to make sure that he gets back healthy and ready to go again.
02:27 And I think now the key concern for us is to make sure that he doesn't sustain any long-term damage,
02:33 because he's still young.
02:34 So we're really going to do everything that's right by him.
02:37 What's he done?
02:39 I can't really share the medical details, but it appears that in a collision he did something to his knee.
02:48 We think he's going to be, like I said, long-term fine,
02:52 but for now, short-term, we have to give him the time to recover.
02:57 And I know timescales are difficult with injuries,
03:00 but are you saying you're not going to see him until maybe after Christmas?
03:03 No, I'd like to think he'll still play this season, but it might be towards the end of the season.
03:10 That will be a significant blow both for you and for him, clearly.
03:14 Yeah, but past the fact that it's a blow for a young player,
03:23 I still think it's for someone else now to step up and wear the shirt in the way that Luka has done.
03:33 I think as well, him being young, I still think in these moments,
03:39 it's just like with defeat and injuries, in these moments,
03:43 if you can keep your head calm, you can really get better, get stronger from these moments.
03:49 So I have no doubt that he'll come back stronger, but for us, short-term-wise,
03:55 it's an undeniable blow.
03:58 How's Lyle?
04:00 Lyle's making good progress.
04:03 We've just spoken about two names, obviously, at this level,
04:08 where every detail, all the margins count.
04:13 It could be better, but as well, I think that we will recover both plays
04:21 and when both plays are ready to go again, we'll benefit from them being Burnley plays.
04:26 Again, I guess with Lyle, you've got to be very careful in terms of timescale.
04:30 You've got to allow him the time to get back on his feet.
04:33 Any indication at all of when you might see him again?
04:37 I just know that he's getting good care and he's in a better place than he was four weeks ago now.
04:46 So let's put it in this way, the most I can say is I'm hopeful,
04:51 I'm very hopeful that it won't be too long before he's able to come and help us again.
05:02 With those two players not around, does that impact your plans for January and the transfer window?
05:08 The squad is still fairly large and we don't have unlimited resources.
05:15 But I'd say this, I think if we can find a way to improve the squad drastically, we'll do that.
05:30 But if it's just to add numbers, that's not what we're out for.
05:34 You might see one or two or three names get floated around,
05:38 but there would have to be real needs.
05:44 There's a couple of positions where we don't have as many numbers,
05:47 but there's a few positions where we have good numbers.
05:49 How tough is a trip to Brighton, bearing in mind they won again last night?
05:52 I think they've gone up to 25 points.
05:54 It's funny because they've become one of the top sides now for me in this league.
06:01 I remember playing against them in my last ever Premier League game,
06:05 which was about four years ago.
06:08 The progress I've made since is incredible.
06:11 I think they stayed up on maybe the last game of the season or the game before that.
06:19 We won the title there, so that was my last game there.
06:24 But four years ago, I think we had 90% of the ball or whatever.
06:28 It was a game that we expected to win.
06:31 If you look at the progress they've made since,
06:34 they've managed to establish themselves in every way possible
06:38 as one of the top teams in this division.
06:41 That's due to many things behind the scenes as well.
06:44 The winner was scored last night by a teenager.
06:46 I just wonder whether that fact and the progress that they've made,
06:50 is that an example that maybe Burnley would want to follow
06:53 in terms of the way that club's grown?
06:55 I think their model is certainly...
06:57 I mean, they've had...
07:00 Because, funnily enough, it was also one of my first league cup games or something in the country.
07:05 They were playing at the Athletic Stadium at the time,
07:08 before they moved to the Arena.
07:11 So, to get through the leagues, they've had an idea a long, long time
07:16 before they got into the Premier League.
07:18 They've had, of course, healthy backing, but healthy ideas as well.
07:24 If I look at what they've become today,
07:27 it started probably when we played against them on that athletic pitch.
07:32 That's kind of what successful projects are all about.
07:37 That vision, that dedication, and what they are today.
07:41 It doesn't surprise me that they not only recruit players,
07:47 produce players, coach players as well,
07:49 because they've had very good coaches over the years,
07:52 that have turned them into, operationally, a very successful club.
07:58 Thanks for your time.
07:59 Thank you.
08:00 Vincent, when you talk about Brighton and their evolution,
08:04 when you watch film of them now,
08:05 what do you see as the greatest strength of them?
08:08 I think they're very complete in many areas.
08:14 They've done that really well.
08:16 The profile of the players that they have,
08:19 fit exactly the way they play.
08:23 They've got a good mix between experienced players
08:29 and promising players for the next level.
08:31 The strength of it all is when you're able to sell a few players
08:35 and bring new players through,
08:37 that actually give you either something different
08:39 or maybe even further strength in the squad.
08:41 Look, they're a prime example of sustainability
08:53 and competitiveness at a prominent level.
08:56 But for us, it's just another tough game.
09:00 Every game is this season.
09:02 How do you approach the challenge that they pose?
09:05 Sheffield United have been there this season
09:07 and proved you can take something from them.
09:09 I think last night's victory was their first at home since September.
09:12 Do you see opportunities?
09:14 I very recently reviewed that game.
09:16 Let's bear in mind that they went down to 10 men
09:20 at the beginning of the second half,
09:23 because the game was very clearly going one way.
09:27 The thing I would say is, for us,
09:31 I think we always have the mindset that we can do something.
09:35 We do.
09:36 I felt like that when we played against Wolves.
09:38 I felt like that when we played Palace, even Arsenal.
09:42 And the team has that belief.
09:45 Now, to get it over the line is what we're talking about now.
09:48 It's that one moment where J-Rod is one-on-one with the goalkeeper,
09:52 putting him in the back of the net,
09:53 the decision-making in the first phase when we have the ball.
09:56 And in so many occasions, they do it well,
10:00 because we do create from a number of situations.
10:04 But it's that final bit that we need to get right.
10:09 Do you feel you're closer?
10:12 Yes, because, like I said,
10:14 if I look at it objectively and I go through the game,
10:18 there's very good content there.
10:21 There's clear improvement of individuals, of the collective.
10:26 But it means nothing until we get the result.
10:29 It means something because, in the discussions I've had with you guys
10:35 over the last 12, 18 months,
10:37 I've always spoken a lot about the difference between
10:42 saying you want to win and actually what you have to do to win.
10:45 So I believe that what we're doing now will lead to us winning.
10:48 But in the moments when you don't win, you get tested.
10:51 Your resilience gets tested.
10:53 But it's there.
10:55 Thank you.
10:56 Thank you.
10:57 Hi, Vincent.
10:59 Just on Luka, he came back on Tuesday, didn't he?
11:02 He tried to play on, so presumably he felt he could run that off.
11:05 No, but I think these type of injuries,
11:08 when it happens, you never know the extent of it.
11:10 Sometimes you feel like it could be a bang,
11:13 but it's only when you get in the scanner
11:17 that you know what you've really done.
11:19 And unfortunately for us, it's not good news.
11:21 You do have good wide options, though, don't you?
11:24 Jakob Brunlarsson has been in the team of late.
11:27 How have you assessed his development this season?
11:30 He's one of the players we have in wide areas
11:35 that we think are exciting.
11:38 And with him, it's always been a case of basically him fulfilling his talent.
11:44 He's always been a big talent and he's had ups and downs in his career.
11:49 But what he's got is a tremendous attitude.
11:52 So anytime you need him, anytime he can be relied upon.
11:57 I still think he's got a lot of margin for improvement.
12:02 He would know that as well.
12:04 I think the talent he is, he can be even better.
12:07 But what you always get with him is a player that's 100% committed
12:11 and that's always nice to work with as a manager.
12:13 I guess having come off the bench at Luton and scored as he did
12:16 and then his composure against Sheffield United,
12:19 that must increase his confidence to no end to actually be able to deliver on the pitch.
12:24 Yes, I think so.
12:26 But the biggest thing I'd say is that we...
12:34 Look, Luka was achieving a level at the moment
12:38 that he was a little bit on a level of his own at the moment.
12:42 So you don't just replace that by putting another person in.
12:46 The other person has just got to do something that he's able to do,
12:51 that himself is able to do.
12:53 So the big thing for me now is, OK, we don't have Luka anymore.
12:59 Can we use the best of either Brun Larsson or Odebere or Mikey Trezor
13:05 or Anna Zeruri or Benson?
13:07 So we've still got players like Goodmanson as well.
13:10 I'm going to forget names now.
13:12 I should have never started with the list.
13:14 You do have good options, though.
13:16 Yes, because the one player I forget, we'll look at the fine print.
13:21 But my intentions are just to say that we have to now rely on other players
13:28 to bring what they've got to the game.
13:30 Why do you like so many of those type of players in your squad?
13:34 I think you can class them as wingers,
13:37 but it's the versatility that's important.
13:42 But I don't think we're doing anything revolutionary.
13:44 If you look at the squad in the Premier League teams,
13:48 most teams have got--
13:51 and I don't know whether it's us recruiting for that
13:54 or players actually getting educated like this more
13:57 through the academy, through the youth systems.
13:59 But a lot of players now are comfortable playing one, two, three,
14:03 four positions.
14:06 And it's important because this season we thought we might have needed
14:10 Goodmanson a bit more central, then you need him a little bit more wide.
14:13 There's always that combination of what is your defensive task defensively,
14:17 what is your defensive task, what is your task on the ball.
14:21 And players who can be a little bit more versatile,
14:25 they'll help you a lot with that.
14:26 You mentioned the other night about the small margins,
14:28 especially at the bottom end of the Premier League.
14:31 How do you best go about narrowing those margins?
14:34 What's the best solution?
14:36 Put a ball in the back of the net.
14:39 But in terms of for me as a coach,
14:42 I think just always do everything you can to help them improve.
14:50 I think part of it is to give them a structure that they can play out
14:57 more often, more often, more often, and therefore they get better
15:00 to give them principles, habits, standards of not just playing,
15:05 but behaviour as well throughout the week.
15:08 And then accept that it's a league where the stakes are very high.
15:17 You're not fighting relegation without having a team that's going through
15:21 moments like what we're going through.
15:24 I have to be able to support the players in these moments as well,
15:27 not just look at them and say, "Why aren't you doing this?"
15:31 I fully expected this and I'm fully motivated even to a point
15:39 where I'm excited to see them actually go through this process
15:42 of the pain and then the gain.
15:45 Thanks, Vincent. Good luck.
15:46 Thank you.
15:47 Josh Cullen and Jack Cork, are they still unavailable?
15:53 Yes, they will be.
15:54 Obviously, you've got Jordan Bear back from suspension.
15:56 You've got a good headache now with four centre-backs fit and available.
16:00 Yes, let's let them compete, let them perform and that's what we're after.
16:07 You do have some players out, you know, Arda Keel, Connor Roberts,
16:10 Zeroian Benson, not played as much recently.
16:12 What's your message to them?
16:13 What do they need to do to force your way into the plans?
16:15 Keep working hard.
16:16 The situation where we're in now, it can't be about the individual.
16:22 It has to be about the team.
16:23 At some point, everybody has an opportunity to show
16:28 and when you have the opportunity, then make it clear to everyone.
16:32 That's how it kind of works in a game.
16:35 I just wanted to ask, I know you keep the focus on yourself,
16:47 but we've seen Bournemouth picking up some results
16:50 and a bit of a gap opening up towards the bottom.
16:53 How important is it to make sure that you don't begin to look cut adrift,
16:57 just in terms of maintaining belief within the squad?
17:00 Yes, but I tend not to pay too much attention to the league table
17:07 because that doesn't win me, that doesn't get me points against Brighton,
17:11 doesn't get me points in the game after.
17:14 But I'm not surprised to see some of these teams pick up points and do well.
17:21 I've seen the squads, I've got an understanding now
17:24 of what they have in terms of quality.
17:27 And like I said, so far I haven't been surprised in any way, shape or form
17:35 by how the league is shaping up.
17:37 The only thing I'm focusing on now is on making sure that,
17:41 OK, first we were trying to get our performances up,
17:45 now we've got performances consistently.
17:48 I'm not saying we're not going to have a bad game at some point,
17:50 but we've had consistently good performances now,
17:53 and that needs to yield points.
17:55 And that's the only thing I focus on, because if you have consistency
17:58 in performances and you believe you can get the points,
18:00 then you shouldn't worry about anybody else.
18:02 But at the moment, that's my only focus.
18:04 I'm just saying, if you begin to see a gap opening up,
18:07 it will affect belief and confidence within the squad, won't it?
18:10 That would, maybe, with other people.
18:16 I don't really work like this.
18:18 I'm sorry. I cannot relate one bit.
18:22 OK, fine. I just wanted to ask as well, you talked a little bit about January.
18:26 Is there money left to spend, or would you be looking at loan markets?
18:29 Because it was obviously quite a busy summer.
18:31 I think it always depends on a number of things,
18:37 but I don't see how we could drastically go out there
18:47 and drastically spend our way into staying in this division.
18:52 I think it would have to be a combination of one or two really smart deals
19:01 if we find them, because also you're not necessarily always
19:05 in the strongest position when you're in the bottom of the league
19:08 to go and make a case to a player to commit his future to you.
19:12 But there might be an opportunity.
19:15 And then the key thing for us is also making sure that the players
19:19 that we have now and the clear improvements you see,
19:22 that they keep that progress to level up, to turn.
19:29 I just want to mention one player.
19:32 It doesn't really matter.
19:33 We could mention Luka Koloeicu as well, but he's not going to be there now.
19:36 But the likes of Zeki Amdouni or maybe even Sander Berg in recent performances.
19:42 So these guys, their performances have improved that much from two months ago,
19:48 and they've got that much still to go.
19:50 That could also be a key factor of us actually turning these performances
19:54 into results.
19:55 It's also part of the job.
19:59 Thank you.
