00:02 - Welcome to the Screen Babble Christmas special.
00:16 Yay.
00:17 We are super excited to be here
00:19 in the run up to arguably the best TV time of the year.
00:23 I'm sure there's some stats out there
00:24 about how much more telly we watch over the festive period,
00:27 but we don't have them,
00:28 but I'm pretty sure that exists.
00:30 There's some fantastic stuff lined up
00:32 for Christmas 2023, both on streaming and TV,
00:35 and hopefully we're gonna enlighten you all
00:37 on this episode.
00:38 Stephen Ross and Benjamin Jackson are here,
00:42 as you can see, looking very festive.
00:44 Thank you for making the efforts,
00:46 effort, efforts, effort.
00:47 - We try, we try, don't we, Stephen?
00:50 - We do, we do indeed.
00:51 - They're here to keep you right
00:52 on the road to TV enlightenment.
00:55 Remember, you can also catch us on Shots,
00:57 Freeview Channel 276,
00:58 where you'll find lots of other great content.
01:01 Okay, without further ado, Stephen,
01:03 you're gonna start us off this year with films.
01:06 This year, this year, this, yeah,
01:08 that's good, isn't it, this year?
01:09 'Cause we do this every year.
01:10 - It's felt like a year, hasn't it?
01:12 - (laughs) Since the start of the podcast.
01:15 (both laughing)
01:17 Over to you.
01:18 - Right, what a stellar intro.
01:22 Yeah, I am gonna kick us off
01:23 with a selection of Christmas films coming out.
01:27 This month, ahead of the big day.
01:30 So the first one that I wanna spotlight
01:33 is "The Heist Before Christmas,"
01:36 which is coming to Skymax at a date to be confirmed,
01:40 but I have, I did get a preview of it,
01:43 so I can recommend.
01:45 It's a weirdly big cast for a film
01:50 that is only gonna come out on Sky,
01:53 and I don't think a lot of people are gonna see.
01:55 It's got Timothy Spall as Santa,
01:58 and James Nesbitt as a bank robber
02:01 who's dressed as Santa.
02:03 And essentially, the plot surrounds a young boy
02:07 from a very poor single-parent household
02:11 who finds, he witnesses James Nesbitt rob a bank
02:16 whilst dressed as Santa, and then escape into the woods,
02:21 where he then finds Timothy Spall as actual Santa,
02:26 and confuses the two, hopes to help Santa
02:30 in order to gain a cut of the loot
02:33 that he robbed from the bank,
02:34 because he wants to buy his younger brother a bike
02:36 because his mom's very poor,
02:38 and they're not gonna have a great Christmas.
02:41 So it's that typical, you know, basic confusion
02:47 that is the crux of the film,
02:49 the mix-up between the two Santas.
02:51 It's weirdly less funny.
02:55 Like, that's not criticism.
02:57 It's just not designed as a comedy.
02:59 It's, you kind of expect a film like this
03:02 and set at Christmas to be very funny,
03:05 or at least like, you know, like the nativity films
03:08 with all these like cheesy laughs,
03:10 but it's actually just very like social realist,
03:15 gritty, mom's very poor, is buying a dog bone
03:19 to cook dinner with, really hard up,
03:22 Christmas is gonna be grim this year.
03:24 James Nesbitt's just playing Santa as the bank robber,
03:28 sorry, the bank robber dressed as Santa
03:30 is just, you know, a typical bank robber.
03:33 Timothy Spall's Santa has his own issues going on,
03:37 and it's more of a drama than a comedy,
03:40 which is a bit strange, and it's quite heavy in places
03:44 because of just the grueling poverty
03:47 of the main family involved.
03:50 And you have the woman trying to hold down a job
03:55 at a supermarket with her boss,
03:57 who is a real piece of work,
04:00 but because it is a Christmas film,
04:02 it does all sort of come good at the end.
04:04 It's something a bit different.
04:07 I think it probably would have benefited more
04:09 from being a comedy, a straight comedy,
04:11 rather than a cost of living drama.
04:13 I don't know how many people wanna watch that this year,
04:15 you know, be reminded of the reality of it,
04:19 but it's out there
04:20 and it is something a little bit different.
04:23 And then another Christmas film,
04:26 an alternative Christmas film very much,
04:28 is "It's a Wonderful Knife",
04:30 which is, as it sounds, inspired by "It's a Wonderful Life",
04:35 which is one of my favorite Christmas films of all time.
04:38 It's a pure favorite Christmas film.
04:40 It's the general--
04:41 - Loads of people, loads of people, yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:45 - It's, yeah, for the connoisseur.
04:47 But this is about a person
04:50 who saves a small town from a psychotic killer,
04:54 but then realizes after the fact
04:56 that her life isn't all that wonderful,
04:58 and she wishes she'd never been born,
05:01 and then find herself in a parallel universe
05:03 where without her, things could be much, much worse
05:06 because of the psychotic killer, et cetera.
05:08 So it's inspired by the Jimmy Stewart film, obviously.
05:11 I've not seen this one.
05:13 I can't imagine it's as good as the Jimmy Stewart film,
05:15 but for people who--
05:17 - Modern classic already. - Oh, I don't know.
05:19 I do not know.
05:20 I don't know if I agree with that, Stephen.
05:21 - I think probably horror fans,
05:22 I suspect Dwenji might fall into this camp.
05:25 Who just, they can't miss a festive season
05:29 without injecting a bit of horror into it,
05:31 might wanna catch this.
05:32 I imagine it might be quite funny as well.
05:34 - No, I mean, like the mean one.
05:37 Already, it sounds like I've got a double bill
05:40 with "It's a Wonderful Knife" followed by "The Mean One,"
05:43 which was that Grinch-based horror movie, wasn't it?
05:46 - Yeah, but you know what?
05:47 "It's a Wonderful Knife" followed by "It's a Wonderful Life"
05:50 or vice versa might be a good double bill as well.
05:52 Anyway, "It's a Wonderful Knife" is on--
05:53 - Ooh, like the Christmas Barbenheimer.
05:55 - "It's a Wonderful Knife" is on Shudder,
05:59 which you might not have heard of.
06:01 I hadn't until recently.
06:02 It's a horror streaming service, which is $4.99 a month.
06:06 So they're currently offering a seven-day free trial as well,
06:09 but if you're not too sure about "It's a Wonderful Knife,"
06:13 they've got a lot of dross on there,
06:14 but as well, some big films like "Suspiria,"
06:17 "The Wicker Man," the original, not Nick Cage,
06:19 "Wrong Turn," et cetera.
06:21 They've got a fair amount of films.
06:22 So if you are a big horror fan,
06:24 this is maybe an opportunity to get a free trial for Shudder.
06:28 It might be the perfect excuse.
06:29 And then finally, again,
06:34 back to more classical Christmas vibes,
06:37 we have "Wonka," the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
06:40 - Yay!
06:41 - Horror! - Requel, which, yeah,
06:44 which comes to cinemas on December the 8th.
06:48 So this is obviously based on the character
06:51 from Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,"
06:55 and it tells the wonderful story
06:57 of how the world's greatest magical inventor,
07:02 bugger me, how the world--
07:06 - Confectionery king.
07:07 - Confectionery king is great.
07:10 I'm gonna go from wherever.
07:13 So "Wonka," obviously based on the Roald Dahl book,
07:17 "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,"
07:18 it tells the story of how the world's greatest
07:23 chocolate king, confectionery king,
07:25 came to be and how he got his oompa-loompa slave army
07:32 to run the chocolate factory for him.
07:36 And it's coming to cinemas on the 8th of December.
07:39 And of course, it stars Timothy Chamelet,
07:42 better known for being Kylie Jenner's boyfriend
07:45 as the titular Wonka.
07:48 - Ooh, that's bitchy. - I can't imagine
07:50 he'll live up-- - That's bitchy, Stephen.
07:52 - Yeah, I know.
07:53 I can't imagine he'll live up
07:55 to the Gene Wilder interpretation,
07:58 but I do quite like Timothy. - Absolutely.
08:00 - He's been great in some of his roles.
08:03 You'll know him from "June," of course,
08:06 and "Call Me By Your Name."
08:11 And-- - "Heliosim, Don't Look Up."
08:14 - And "Don't Look Up," yeah.
08:16 He's been in an awful lot,
08:18 and he's gonna be in a lot more going forward.
08:19 I think he's very much one to watch, isn't he?
08:24 And this could be one of his-- - He's flavor of,
08:27 yeah, this'll be a big role for him,
08:29 I presume is what you're about to say.
08:30 - Absolutely, yeah.
08:32 So I did, I heard a little bit about it
08:34 on the radio this morning,
08:35 and early reviews are positive, as far as I can tell.
08:38 And apparently, Hugh Grant's turn as the Oompa Loompa,
08:43 even though there was some criticism about the casting,
08:47 is apparently a scene stealer.
08:48 So there you go, all to me. - Yeah, I mean,
08:51 Oompa Loompas aren't an actual people,
08:55 so I didn't really get why people were upset
08:57 that someone who wasn't an Oompa Loompa was playing him.
09:02 The implication that only dwarves should play Oompa Loompas
09:06 seems very, very weird towards dwarves.
09:09 - Well, I'll be looking forward--
09:13 - Align them with Oompa Loompas.
09:15 - I'll be looking forward to seeing what Hugh Grant does,
09:17 but at any rate, I'm sure everybody else will too.
09:18 So that's brilliant.
09:20 Three films for you to get your teeth
09:21 into in the run up to Christmas there, people.
09:24 Okay, I'm gonna do some children's TV just now.
09:29 So if you're not into children's TV,
09:30 you might wanna skip forward.
09:31 But actually, at this time of year,
09:33 children's TV is awesome.
09:35 It's, you know, the big things that come up.
09:37 - I agree, I would agree.
09:39 - This is the moment for children's TV.
09:41 - Very watchable for grownups.
09:43 So the first one is the perennial children's animation
09:47 by the BBC, which is this year, it's,
09:51 well, every year they do a Julia Donaldson adaptation
09:54 for Christmas, and this year it's gonna be Tabby MacTat.
09:57 So it's the 11th year of this,
10:00 where they take on a Julia Donaldson book
10:02 and illustrator Axel Scheffler, I'll say that again.
10:07 This year's animated special,
10:09 the 11th of Donaldson's and illustrator Axel Scheffler.
10:13 Oh my God, this is getting my own back now.
10:19 - Scheffler is it?
10:21 - Scheffler, it's Scheffler.
10:25 - Scheffler.
10:26 - This year's animated special is the 11th
10:28 of the Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler's
10:32 to be adapted.
10:33 It's based on the 2016 book, Tabby MacTat,
10:36 and the story is set on the streets of London
10:37 about the friendship between a musical cat
10:39 and a busker called Fred.
10:40 I was reading it to my kids last night, I know it very well.
10:44 So yeah, as I say, Jodie Whittaker is starring in it,
10:46 as is Rob Brydon, who we all know from many things,
10:49 including Gavin and Stacey,
10:51 Soapy Dearest Sue from Gangs of London,
10:54 Cariad Lloyd from Peep Show,
10:56 and Joanna Scanlon from The Thick of It,
10:59 and many more familiar voices.
11:01 The official synopsis says,
11:03 "Fred, a busker, and his cat, Tabby MacTat,
11:05 who enjoyed contented life,
11:06 singing in the streets of London to a delighted audience
11:08 until one day, when chasing a thief,
11:10 Fred falls and breaks his leg
11:12 and is whisked away in an ambulance.
11:13 What will become of the busker's cat
11:14 left alone on the city streets?"
11:17 So yeah, that, as BBC likes to do it this time of year,
11:21 they don't tell you exactly when it's gonna be on,
11:23 but it'll be on in sort of the week
11:24 in the run-up to Christmas.
11:25 That's usually what happens,
11:26 as is the case with their annual panto.
11:30 So this year, they are doing Robin Hood.
11:33 It's already been filmed.
11:35 They did that in October,
11:37 and the adaptation is of the story,
11:41 which was written by Andrew Pollard,
11:42 while Banks and Wag have provided the music.
11:45 I'm sure everybody will be very excited to hear.
11:48 So, OK, that's us from part one.
11:50 We'll be back in part two
11:51 with so much more Christmas content.
11:53 It's gonna be amazing.
11:54 (upbeat music)
11:56 - OK, welcome back to the Christmas special, everybody.
12:06 And the last thing to mention is
12:07 Netflix has Chicken Run, Dawn of the Nugget
12:10 coming out on December 15th.
12:13 And that is,
12:14 "Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweety's farm,
12:17 Ginger has finally found her dream,
12:18 a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock,
12:20 far from the dangers of the human world.
12:22 When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly,
12:25 Ginger's happy ending seems complete.
12:26 But back on the mainland, the whole of Chickenkind
12:28 faces a new and terrible threat.
12:30 For Ginger and her team,
12:31 even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk,
12:34 this time, they're breaking in."
12:37 - They had me at Nugget.
12:39 They had me at Nugget.
12:41 - That's Dawn of the Nugget, December 15th, Netflix.
12:44 And if you wanna go there with kids and toys,
12:48 and that again, I want to mention the Lele Toy Show,
12:50 which I mentioned in the main pod last week,
12:51 and you get that on the RT player app.
12:53 Right, Benji, you're gonna talk to us about
12:57 the Christmas specials.
12:58 Love this chat.
12:59 - Do you know what would be fantastic right now?
13:01 If Craig could like embed some very nice
13:04 Christmas seasonal music as I inform our listeners.
13:08 (Humming)
13:10 I mean, that'll do.
13:12 I mean, any more, you have to sing at that
13:13 and we'll have to pay royalties towards it.
13:15 But yes, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
13:18 is it truly a Christmas television season
13:21 without the return of the Christmas special
13:24 called "The Midwife"?
13:26 Absolutely not.
13:28 And as listeners of the podcast
13:32 and viewers on Shots might know,
13:34 this boy here, he likes a bit of horror
13:36 and he likes a bit of kaiju action,
13:38 but he also has a soft spot for "Call the Midwife."
13:41 I absolutely love that show.
13:43 It's become a tradition.
13:45 - I think I only watch it as,
13:48 I've probably seen three or four
13:49 called "The Midwife" Christmas specials
13:51 because my mother would watch it.
13:53 And you're on the couch at Christmas at home
13:56 and you've no choice, but they're good.
13:58 Like they're worth the watch, you know?
14:00 - It's mom's favorite, isn't it?
14:02 It's kind of, it's either gonna be
14:04 "The King's Speech" or "Call the Midwife."
14:07 That's, you sit down, have a watch with your family.
14:10 - Definitely the latter in our house.
14:12 (laughing)
14:13 - But I mean, the preview for this year's Christmas special
14:16 involves a delivery taking place during a snowstorm.
14:21 Which I don't know if the snow bomb's gonna arrive or not,
14:25 but it's kind of art imitating life.
14:27 That will come out on Christmas Eve,
14:31 which will then be followed in the new year by season 13,
14:34 if I remember correctly, of "Call the Midwife."
14:37 If that's not your kind of thing whatsoever though,
14:42 could I also suggest something that I watched last night,
14:46 which was the "A Very Brassic Christmas Special."
14:49 - Oh my God, I'm so excited for this.
14:51 I'm just in the, I'm on episode three or four
14:56 of the new series and I'm desperately trying to get it done
15:00 before the Christmas special.
15:02 And we haven't talked about it actually
15:04 on the podcast recently, but I love Brassic.
15:07 I absolutely love it.
15:08 - I just think it's, when people ask me about it,
15:13 I kind of compare it to like the Canadian TV series,
15:17 "Trailer Park Boys," which is kind of like a bunch
15:19 of reformates that are trying to make a living,
15:22 earn a crust and stuff like that.
15:24 And I'm not gonna spoil it for anyone, especially Kelly,
15:27 but he makes a crust in the end.
15:29 But the Christmas special is basically the idea of Vinny,
15:34 played by the incredible Joe Gilgan once again,
15:38 who also created the show.
15:41 Not only is he having to put together a Christmas nativity
15:46 because some people destroyed the nativity set
15:51 at his son's school, but he also has to combine that
15:55 with also looking after or overseeing the auntie
16:00 of Dominic West's character,
16:02 who happens to be an Acapulco Jason Skirt.
16:07 That cast member happens to be Imelda Staunton,
16:12 who is absolutely brilliant in her role
16:16 as a cantankerous kind of older person
16:20 that had a bit of a family turmoil going on
16:25 that unfortunately leads into another guest role,
16:30 just basically being a real scrooge.
16:32 One, Craig Davies, who, oh, Greg Davies won.
16:36 That leads into her discovering that the villain,
16:41 I would guess, of the piece, played by Greg Davies,
16:46 who Sky love at the minute,
16:48 'cause he's presenting "Nevermind the Buzzcocks,"
16:50 which also has a Christmas special,
16:53 playing, if I remember the name correctly, Dick Dolphin,
16:56 who is a celebrated actor in the area
16:59 who opens a winter wonderland.
17:01 So, of course, Vinny and the gang being Vinny and the gang,
17:07 if they can't go through things
17:09 in a less than nefarious process to get the items,
17:13 then they'll go by any means necessary.
17:15 - To be honest, I mean, the nativity
17:17 plus bad guy opens winter wonderland,
17:20 like literally they're the laziest Christmas tropes
17:23 of all time.
17:24 - They are, 100%.
17:26 - But "Foresic" is like, you just know their take on it
17:30 is going to be so off the wall.
17:33 - Yeah, I mean, yeah, admittedly on paper, it's formulaic.
17:37 It's like, oh no, how are we going to save the nativity?
17:40 And, you know, this person's lonely for Christmas.
17:43 Will they reconcile with their family?
17:46 But you don't go into "Foresic"
17:48 to see postmodern kind of work, do you?
17:51 You go into "Foresic" because the dialogue is incredible,
17:55 even the little, when someone chimes in in the background.
17:58 So that is coming to-
18:00 - It's the ad-libbing in the back,
18:01 it's the kind of murmuring and the,
18:04 I don't know how they do it,
18:05 I don't know how they write it,
18:06 but it's so well done.
18:07 Like, it's just, obviously they write a good bit of it,
18:10 but there's something else going on there that,
18:12 I don't know if they film it lots of times
18:14 or only once or whatever, they just let them do it.
18:16 - Part of me wonders if it's kind of improv'd
18:18 at times as well.
18:19 - I think it is a little bit, yeah.
18:21 'Cause it's very natural.
18:23 - It's got the same little dial of nuances
18:26 that you get from "This is England,"
18:28 which was another series and film
18:30 that Joe Gilgan was involved in.
18:31 So maybe his writing was informed by,
18:34 was it Shane Meadows that did that series?
18:37 - Yeah. - Yeah.
18:37 - But that's coming to Sky Showcase.
18:42 I can't keep up with the name changes anymore,
18:44 the channels.
18:45 December 21st, and it will be available on demand.
18:48 And I know that you are looking forward to this one
18:50 in particular, Stephen.
18:52 Doctor Who, the annual Christmas special.
18:55 I think we're on the 11th Christmas special now, Stephen,
18:57 is that correct?
18:59 - Sounds about right.
19:00 - We'll make it up as we go along.
19:03 I'll say it's the 11th.
19:05 It's gonna be the debut of the brand new Doctor Who
19:08 I would imagine.
19:10 Normally they transform over the Christmas period anyway,
19:14 from like Capaldi to Whitaker and Smith to Tennant,
19:19 bits and pieces like that.
19:21 So we not only get introduced to the new Doctor,
19:25 we also get introduced to the new companion.
19:28 It's the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who.
19:30 Anyway, if you're regular readers on National World,
19:34 you will know that Stephen is all over that stuff as well.
19:38 And much like "Call the Midwife,"
19:40 is it really Christmas on the BBC
19:43 without that Doctor Who special?
19:45 - I agree.
19:47 You gotta have a...
19:49 - So, you know, Christmas Eve,
19:50 you're back to backs, ladies and gentlemen.
19:52 "Call the Midwife," Doctor Who Christmas special.
19:54 But if you want a little bit of levity in between that
19:57 or just before that,
19:58 a very brassic Christmas is where you need to be.
20:01 - But I imagine brassic as usual is definitely post-watershed.
20:04 So yeah, watch out for that.
20:06 - Oh, you know, like a bear does his business in the woods.
20:11 Of course, you know, it's definitely,
20:13 definitely post-watershed.
20:14 - If that's Christmas Eve,
20:16 then Christmas Day is over to me for the soaps,
20:19 ladies and gentlemen.
20:20 So I'm gonna do this quite quickly
20:22 because I know everybody's into the soaps,
20:23 but coming up on Carol,
20:25 the big focus is gonna be around Peter Barlow's exit
20:29 from the soap, which I'm sure is no secret by now.
20:32 He's been around for quite a long time.
20:34 So that's gonna be quite poignant.
20:36 And I think there's a sort of a episode-long,
20:39 just two-hander with him and Carla
20:41 and sort of revisiting all their key moments.
20:43 So that might be good in the sense
20:45 that there's probably gonna be lots of flashbacks.
20:46 So it'd be a nice little nostalgia buzz episode.
20:49 But I thought maybe that's a bit sedate
20:50 for a Christmas special.
20:51 But anyway, there you go.
20:53 Not a Christmas special,
20:54 but you know the way like Christmas special storylines
20:56 at Christmas.
20:57 The other thing in,
20:59 two things worth mentioning in Carol as well
21:02 are ongoing deterioration of Paul, who is MND.
21:06 Bernie's got herself into trouble.
21:07 His mother probably gonna end up in prison for Christmas.
21:10 Probably Paul's last Christmas.
21:12 Very sad, all of that going on.
21:14 And then the return of, and this is a spoiler,
21:17 the return of Lucy Fallon,
21:21 also known as Bethany Platt.
21:23 She's coming back after being away for five years
21:26 and she had a little tryst with Daniel Barlow in the past.
21:31 And this is potentially going to be revisited,
21:34 which is interesting because obviously Daisy's
21:37 been having a bit of an affair with Ryan.
21:39 So there's all that going on in terms of romantic drama.
21:42 EastEnders is probably the soap
21:45 that has done the biggest job in terms of trailing
21:49 its Christmas storylines.
21:53 They put out their first trailer for Christmas
21:55 in February this year, people.
21:56 I mean, come on, like they're making an absolute job of this.
22:00 So that trailer showed us the six female characters
22:04 that are gonna be involved in the storyline.
22:05 Sharon, Cathy, Stacey, Linda, and Suki.
22:09 And they were standing over a mysterious dead body
22:11 at the Queen Vic.
22:13 Stacey's blood on her hands.
22:14 Denise is holding a smashed bottle.
22:15 Ladies are looking on as shocked bride Sharon
22:18 bends down to hold a man's wrist and confirms he's dead.
22:21 So basically EastEnders is going to be,
22:24 we don't know who the man is.
22:25 So this is, and they're all,
22:27 they've all had different run-ins with different men.
22:28 - Bet it's Larry Lamb.
22:30 - It's probably Larry Lamb, exactly, yeah.
22:32 - I'd like, Sharon seems to have a bit of a habitual problem
22:36 killing people over Christmas specials, right?
22:39 - Let's just hope they don't do it
22:40 with the Queen Vic bossed again.
22:42 And finally, Emmerdale is,
22:45 I don't really watch Emmerdale much anymore.
22:49 I used to love it, but anyway,
22:50 apparently there's a serious love triangle
22:52 going on at the moment between Charity, Mackenzie and Chloe.
22:55 That's going to come to a crescendo
22:57 when Chloe's dodgy dealing dad, gangster dad turns up
23:00 and I think somebody is going to end up dead basically.
23:03 But what happens, what is happening with Emmerdale is
23:06 there is a huge storyline coming in the new year.
23:08 There's going to be a big disaster in the village
23:10 and there's going to be, two of the families
23:12 are going to be really devastated as a result.
23:14 So there you go.
23:16 That's a preview to 2024,
23:17 but that's a whole other episode, people.
23:19 So thank you for listening to Screen Babble.
23:21 That was amazing.
23:22 Like all the Christmas content.
23:23 I mean, we were only touching the surface there,
23:25 but obviously there's going to be loads coming up.
23:27 So stay tuned for Weekend Watch,
23:30 where we'll be letting you know any other new little bits
23:32 and pieces that are coming on over the next few weeks.
23:33 We'll be letting you know the details
23:35 of when and where things are going to be previewing
23:38 or we'll let you know the details of when
23:41 and where everything is going to be showing.
23:42 And we'll be getting excited
23:44 for more Christmas TV ourselves.
23:46 So thanks for tuning in and see you all next time.
23:50 Bye.
