00:00 Julia Roberts speaks out on the passing of her ex, Matthew Perry.
00:04 The Oscar winner opens up about her brief stint on Friends and the tragic loss of Matthew
00:09 in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, published December 4th.
00:12 She addresses Perry's death, telling the outlet,
00:15 "The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking. I think that, you know,
00:20 it just helps all of us to just appreciate what we have and to keep going in a positive way as
00:25 best we can." Of her time on Friends and working with the cast, she says, "They were all so
00:30 welcoming to me as just a kind of a one-off character, and it was a really fun time."
00:35 Julia starred as a childhood classmate of Perry's character Chandler Bing on the 1996 episode,
00:41 "The One After the Super Bowl."
00:43 "So listen, how many times am I gonna have to touch you on the arm before you ask me on a date?"
00:48 "Well, uh, let's try one more.
00:54 There you go, say, 'Oh, it's eight o'clock.'"
00:55 "And who knows, if things go well, maybe this time I'll get to see your underwear."
01:02 "No one was around to hear that."
01:10 In a December 4th visit to The View, Julia also recalled the episode.
01:15 "You had a famous appearance on there in 1996."
01:19 "The Super Bowl episode."
01:21 "Now, as you know, Matthew Perry has recently passed. Do you have a favorite memory you could
01:25 share with us of your time at Friends?"
01:27 "Well, I am such a football fanatic. This is something not a lot of people know,
01:32 but yesterday when I was still working when the 49ers were playing, and I was like,
01:36 'Anybody got an update?' And there was always a voice from somewhere that would tell me what
01:39 was going on, and I thought, 'I wish this was my whole life.' But it was so, to be on the Super
01:45 Bowl episode made me feel that much closer to the Super Bowl, which I have never been to."
01:51 "Can I, can I say, do we, we don't know where it is this year, right?
01:55 "People know."
01:55 "Vegas. It's in Vegas. Do you want to go to the Super Bowl?"
01:58 "Oh, now I'm afraid. If we went to the Super Bowl together,
02:01 but in Las Vegas, we'd leave poor."
02:04 "Yes, but it won't be the first time."
02:08 Matthew Perry died at his home October 28th. A fire department spokesperson previously told
02:16 E! News officials found a quote "adult male unconscious in a standalone hot tub" after
02:21 responding to an emergency call at the time. LAFD Captain Eric Scott said on October 30th,
02:27 a bystander had brought the man's head above the water and gotten him to the edge,
02:31 then firefighters removed him from the water upon their arrival. A rapid medical assessment
02:36 sadly revealed the man was deceased prior to first responder arrival. In the year before
02:41 his passing, Matthew released his memoir called Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
02:46 In the book, he opened up about his brief romance with Roberts. Perry revealed on the page that the
02:50 two started dating shortly after Julia signed on to guest star on the 90s sitcom. However,
02:55 he wrote that the Pretty Woman actress quote "would only do the show if she could be in my
02:59 storyline," adding that he had to woo her. Perry said he sent Roberts three dozen roses and a note
03:06 that read, "The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I
03:10 finally have an excuse to send you flowers." The pair then began what Matthew explained was a
03:15 three-month-long courtship by sending each other faxes, and their platonic relationship quickly
03:20 evolved into a romantic one. However, Perry soon let his own thoughts get the best of him,
03:25 and he ended his relationship with Roberts just two months later. He admitted in the book,
03:30 "Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going
03:34 to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough. I could never be enough. I was broken,
03:39 bent, unlovable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up
03:44 with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts."
