00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we'll be looking at the 20 Greatest LEGO Video Games
00:14 You Absolutely Must Play.
00:23 Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:28 Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:33 LEGO Rock Raiders
00:41 Rock Raiders is sort of the runt of the litter on our list, but that doesn't mean it is
00:45 less deserving of any praise.
00:47 It is actually a surprisingly solid title.
00:50 Lead your team to gather crystals and rescue your fellow raiders in this relatively low-stakes
00:54 strategy game.
01:02 Sure it may not be as captivating as the LEGO games we see today, yet Rock Raiders is a
01:06 welcome change of scenery compared to the typical pirate city space and medieval themed
01:11 games and toys we've seen a dozen times already.
01:14 Really, don't knock it till you try it.
01:23 LEGO Racers 2
01:31 LEGO Racers 2 was interesting in how it expanded upon its predecessor, which we will get into
01:36 in a little bit.
01:37 With more of an open world approach, the game gave players a ton of freedom to explore the
01:41 five worlds featured.
01:43 You could find new missions, aim for secret collectibles, or simply practice your driving
01:48 skills and stunts.
01:57 In other words, there was quite a bit to do in this package.
02:00 We just wish the voice acting was a bit more than the banjo-kazooie gibberish talk.
02:10 LEGO Jurassic World
02:19 Though the Jurassic World movies have come and gone with little more than a whimper,
02:23 LEGO Jurassic World was way more fun to experience.
02:26 Yes, you got to experience the three original movies and the first Jurassic World, but that's
02:31 not why you're here.
02:32 You're here for dinosaurs, and the game gives you plenty of opportunities to play
02:37 as one.
02:44 Critics may not have stuck around long for this one given how frequently we were getting
02:48 LEGO games, however, this game was meant more for fans of the movies who just so happened
02:53 to like LEGO.
02:54 And it stuck with us for the whole ride.
03:03 LEGO Batman 3 Beyond Gotham
03:13 Some folks argue that Beyond Gotham is the lesser of the LEGO Batman games due to how
03:17 large the frame roam segments are.
03:20 You are given a ton of side quests, races, and collectibles to find once you're done
03:24 with the main campaign.
03:25 We'd argue this was the best part about Beyond Gotham.
03:34 In addition to a solid main story, the various green lantern planets kept you wondering what
03:39 new characters you might encounter next.
03:41 Bat-Cow?
03:42 Crypto the Superdog?
03:44 Daffy Duck?
03:45 Plus the amount of love towards the 1960s Batman TV series was just icing on the cake.
03:52 Same goes for the DLC levels.
04:02 LEGO The Hobbit
04:11 Now we can understand why some might avoid LEGO The Hobbit.
04:15 Honestly, it confuses us as to why the game was made when the third movie wasn't even
04:19 out yet.
04:20 Even so, it is still a game worth playing.
04:23 Though slightly shorter than the first LEGO Lord of the Rings game, it was still fun to
04:27 play thanks to the improved visuals, bringing Middle-Earth to life in a way we hadn't
04:32 seen before.
04:39 In a sense, it was taking advantage of the hardware at the time, even if it wasn't
04:43 super obvious.
04:44 Plus, the way it fixes multiplayer with the dynamic screen splitting?
04:49 That was a godsend.
04:56 LEGO Racers
04:57 Sure, everyone and their grandma was getting a kart racer game of their own in 1999.
05:12 But no one had a kart racer as ambitious as LEGO Racers.
05:16 You could play it like any other kart racer and drive from a handful of colorful LEGO
05:19 characters, or if you wanted to experience the game at its fullest potential, you could
05:24 build your own kart with its stats affected by the way you build it.
05:34 You simply don't see this level of customization anymore in racing games, and coupled with
05:38 the jamming soundtrack, it made LEGO Racers a truly unforgettable title.
05:50 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2
06:03 TT Games could have easily done what they did with Avengers and just reused New York
06:07 for its free roam, but they didn't.
06:10 This LEGO Marvel needed to stand on its own in some way.
06:13 Why not introduce Kang the Conqueror and mash together different timelines and civilizations
06:18 into one chronopolis?
06:20 With this concept, LEGO Marvel 2 was able to get crazier with the roster, pulling in
06:24 heroes and villains from all sorts of storylines.
06:27 And it wound up giving us one of the largest character grids in the entire LEGO history.
06:33 It was insane.
06:43 LEGO Batman 2 DC Super Heroes
06:53 LEGO Batman 2 was a major stepping stone for TT Games and the LEGO franchise, as this was
06:57 the first time the series truly went open world.
07:00 As Batman, Robin, and a slew of other heroes and baddies, you could roam around Gotham
07:05 City in between story missions, take on side quests to unlock new characters, and more.
07:17 It may not be as impressive compared to the modern LEGO games, but at the time, it was
07:21 exciting to see this evolution in the formula.
07:30 LEGO City Undercover
07:39 We really don't get original LEGO games as often as we could be getting.
07:43 It's sort of the reason why we love LEGO City Undercover so much.
07:47 Licenses outside of LEGO finally took a step back here for TT Games to tell a story that
07:52 was original and could stand on its own, and they succeeded.
07:56 With their own version of LEGO City, we saw a region that was diverse with a bumbling
07:59 metropolis, quiet neighborhood, a mountainside region of trailers and train depots, and the
08:05 like.
08:11 It also incorporated the character swapping into your initial playthrough through the
08:15 use of costumes.
08:17 It was all such a nice change of pace, and the Mario references in the Wii U and Switch
08:21 versions were a pleasant addition.
08:27 LEGO Star Wars The Complete Saga
08:37 If you missed out on the first two LEGO Star Wars games, chances are you picked this one
08:41 up for your first go.
08:43 We'll say it, those who waited got lucky and saved some money.
08:47 LEGO Star Wars The Complete Saga was the first two games mashed into one complete package.
08:58 The only major difference was that the first game received two levels that were cut from
09:02 the original version, and every level reworked certain mini-kits to implement the new mechanics
09:07 that were featured in the second game.
09:09 It truly felt like one, meaty, fully complete saga.
09:18 LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7
09:31 Just like a handful of other franchises on this list, Harry Potter has had enough history
09:35 with LEGO to warrant its own couple of games, and we finally got them in 2010 and 2011.
09:41 While some of the controls were a tad frustrating to deal with, particularly when it came to
09:45 levitating objects, LEGO Harry Potter managed to capture the spirit and wonder of the movies
09:50 while still incorporating the charm and humor we've come to expect from LEGO.
10:01 Playing these games only made us want to go and rewatch the franchise for the billionth
10:04 time, and if a licensed game invokes that urge inside of you, the game's done good.
10:09 Don't have a copy anymore?
10:11 Thankfully, you can revisit both games on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch
10:16 through the LEGO Harry Potter Collection.
10:24 LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean It may not have been as big of a blockbuster
10:37 as the films that inspired it or previous LEGO games, but there was still plenty to
10:41 love in LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean.
10:44 In addition to the goofy humor and recreated characters, the game came with a few new mechanics
10:48 such as using Jack's compass to find hidden items.
10:51 Speaking of which, TT Games gave the LEGO Jack the same hilarious run as his live-action
10:56 counterpart.
10:57 Nice touch.
11:03 Whether you're a fan of the Pirates franchise, LEGO, or just collect-a-thon adventure games,
11:08 LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean was not an adventure to skip out on.
11:17 LEGO Island Not only was it one of the first video games
11:29 based on LEGO, but it was also a phenomenal game at the time.
11:34 Before TT Games became the studio to go to for good LEGO games, LEGO Island provided
11:40 players a virtual island to explore, filled with colorful characters like Pepperoni, the
11:44 Brickolinis, and the dastardly Brickster.
11:54 Of course, there was more to the game than just wandering around and talking to people.
11:57 Players could also participate in a variety of mini-games and even build vehicles for
12:00 the denizens of the island.
12:02 Dang, LEGO has come a long way to make itself a name in gaming.
12:10 LEGO Indiana Jones The Original Adventures
12:18 The first LEGO Indiana Jones was proof that TT Games could continue producing high-quality
12:22 titles without lightsabers and starships.
12:25 With this new license came a wealth of new ideas for combat and puzzles that fit with
12:29 the indie IP.
12:31 Crack indies whip at bad guys, dig up collectibles, get killed by booby traps over and over again,
12:36 you know, the stuff you would see in an Indiana Jones movie.
12:39 The only difference was, well, all of the bricks.
12:43 Needless to say, this wasn't just another game to slap the LEGO name on.
12:46 It was a path to a brighter future for both the brick-building company and TT Games.
12:59 LEGO The Lord of the Rings
13:13 Before this, TT Games had simply recreated classic movies and retold stories through
13:17 pantomime.
13:18 While it was only the second TT Games LEGO title to feature voice acting, the first being
13:23 LEGO Batman 2, this was the first time TT Games was able to incorporate audio ripped
13:27 straight from the source material into the game.
13:40 LEGO Lord of the Rings succeeded in retelling the story of the original trilogy while replicating
13:44 camera shots and tweaking a few bits to fit the LEGO charm.
13:47 Yes, even with the changes to make it light-hearted, it was still oddly dark for a LEGO game, but
13:53 it was also still incredibly fun getting lost in the world of Middle-Earth.
14:06 LEGO Dimensions
14:15 LEGO Dimensions was an unfortunate victim of circumstance due to it releasing long after
14:20 the Toys to Life craze died down.
14:22 Still, it doesn't make it any less deserving to be on this list.
14:26 LEGO Dimensions is one of those games that will never exist again because of how many
14:30 different IPs were crammed in.
14:39 Can you name any other game that has The Wizard of Oz, Adventure Time, The Simpsons, Ghostbusters,
14:45 Scooby Doo, Back to the Future, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Portal under one banner?
14:49 I didn't think so.
14:51 This wasn't just a celebration of LEGO, it was a celebration of pop culture across
14:55 different eras of movies, television, comics, and of course, video games.
15:08 LEGO DC Super-Villains
15:18 While it wasn't the first time a LEGO game gave focus to the bad guys, LEGO DC Super-Villains
15:22 was a breath of fresh air for a formula that was starting to become stale at this point.
15:27 We're not just talking about how the game encourages you to embrace your inner bad guy
15:31 either.
15:32 DC Super-Villains was the first time custom characters had a role in the story, and the
15:36 game gives you a ton of options at the start to help you conjure your criminal mastermind.
15:47 Being bad had never felt this good, and after our time with this, even we could find a new
15:55 appreciation for even the most ridiculous DC villains.
16:08 LEGO Marvel Super-Heroes
16:20 With all of the games LEGO made based on Warner Bros. properties, one would have never expected
16:24 a LEGO Marvel game to come to fruition, and yet here we are.
16:28 LEGO Marvel Super-Heroes could have easily become a clone to another LEGO-fied Super-Hero
16:32 game, but it distinguished itself with a bigger open world, bigger levels, and a bigger roster
16:38 of characters.
16:47 The roster is especially noteworthy, as each character brought something unique to the
16:51 table in terms of combining powers of other characters, or having hilarious idle animations
16:56 brimming with personality.
16:58 Really, you could feel the love that was put into this, and if you can't, then you haven't
17:02 seen LEGO Stan Lee yet.
17:10 LEGO Batman The Video Game
17:11 Typically, studios hit a rough patch after releasing a handful of exceptional games,
17:25 but as we've seen before, TT Games is not like most studios.
17:29 Just like the studio's previous work, LEGO Batman The Video Game was able to incorporate
17:33 new ideas without faltering to level designs and puzzles we've seen before.
17:44 Players now had to utilize special suits to progress, and know which tools to use when
17:48 destroying and building.
17:50 In regards to the story, this was the first time TT Games was able to tell something original,
17:55 as well as the first time villains were given their own separate campaign.
17:58 Basically, you got two new games in one package, and they're both immensely fun to play.
18:12 LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga
18:22 Skywalker Saga truly is the best LEGO game ever made.
18:26 Some folks might feel the open world fatigue with the hundreds of missions and kyber bricks
18:30 to collect.
18:31 For us LEGO fans, it was everything we dreamed of a LEGO game being.
18:36 Every character looked as if they were real minifigs moving, and the world felt more alive
18:41 with its various side missions and secrets to uncover.
18:44 You weren't just living a Star Wars game, you were living a LEGO game.
18:54 And lest we forget the monumental roster of more than 300 characters, not including those
19:01 that were added in from DLC.
19:03 Yeah, this is a game to keep kids and parents busy for quite some time.
19:08 Highly recommended.
19:21 Thanks for watching.
19:30 Bye.
19:33 (upbeat music)
