00:00 From brilliant solutions solving the problem of a missing actor, to on-set injuries being
00:05 masked by subtly masterful camera work, these are just a few of the Star Wars scenes that
00:10 were secretly deceiving you.
00:12 Gareth here from WhatCultureStarWars and here are 10 Star Wars Scenes You Didn't Realize
00:17 Were Tricking You.
00:19 10.
00:20 Adam Driver recorded his last few lines in his closet.
00:23 The Rise of Skywalker It's not exactly a secret at this point that
00:28 a great many changes were made to J.J. Abrams' The Rise of Skywalker flick over the course
00:32 of the ninth and final Skywalker Saga entries' creation.
00:36 What you may not have been aware of, though, is the fact that some of the final lines ever
00:39 rewritten before being let loose by none other than Kylo Ren himself, Adam Driver, weren't
00:45 actually uttered on one of the film's sets or in front of any camera at all.
00:49 In fact, according to the movie's sound editor Matthew Wood, Driver was tasked with
00:53 recording his last lines as a masked Ren within the comforts of his own Brooklyn home.
00:58 But with the actor not exactly coming equipped with his own state-of-the-art ADR booth, Wood
01:02 would confess, "I went to Driver's house in Brooklyn.
01:05 I ended up opening up one of his closets where he had all of his suits, and I just pushed
01:09 the suits out of the way and said, 'Hang your head in here.'"
01:12 The glamour of filmmaking, eh?
01:14 9.
01:15 Mark Hamill's injury was hidden in the trash compactor.
01:18 A new hope!
01:19 The sequence depicting Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Princess Leia all attempting
01:24 to survive being slowly crushed to death within a trash compactor, was actually subtly disguising
01:30 a rather hilarious blunder as it goes.
01:32 In a bid to make himself authentically look as though he'd just survived being strangled
01:36 by the creature within the Death Star's trash pit, Mark Hamill actually intentionally
01:40 made himself red-faced during the shooting of the scene.
01:43 However, being the committed soul fans knew him to be, Hamill went a little too far and
01:47 actually ended up bursting a blood vessel in his eye.
01:50 Knowing they couldn't afford to pause the shoot, though, Lucas instead had his crew
01:54 carefully shoot around Hamill's cock up until it had healed.
01:57 So that's why Hamill is largely shot from only one side of his person during this intense
02:01 turn of events.
02:03 8.
02:04 Han Solo's Hoth jacket was actually brown all along.
02:07 The Empire Strikes Back For the longest time, many a Star Wars fanatic
02:11 had blissfully assumed that the furry jacket sported by everyone's favourite smuggler
02:15 on the freezing cold planet of Hoth was obviously of the blue variety.
02:19 Hell, even Hasbro even went out of their way to unleash a toy that depicted Han Solo decked
02:24 out in a coat of this colour back in the day.
02:27 With that being said, though, there were still large portions of the fanbase who were adamant
02:30 that Harrison Ford's wisecracking personality was actually kitted out in a brown parka during
02:35 these frosty scenes.
02:36 Well, after years of debate, the truth was finally uncovered during a "Discoveries
02:40 from Inside Costumes Revealed" featurette for Attack of the Clones' digital HD release.
02:46 According to said behind-the-scenes footage, the jacket was shown off in all its very much
02:49 brown glory in the costume department, with not a single glimmer of blue in sight.
02:55 7.
02:56 Peter Cushing was cruel but rarely uncomfortable - A New Hope
03:00 It may actually come as a bit of a surprise to hear that the legendary Peter Cushing was
03:04 actually storming around the Death Star in a pair of carpet slippers for the majority
03:08 of his time on set.
03:09 With the Grand Moff Tarkin icon boasting some rather large feet, the actor would later reveal
03:14 in a rather old interview that they hadn't got time to have his boots made for him.
03:18 Then after strutting around in a pair of stock shoes, the agony Cushing felt led to the thespian
03:23 requesting for Lucas to shoot him from the waist up for the rest of his time on screen.
03:27 From that point on, Cushing was slipped into some anything but intimidating carpet slippers,
03:32 from everything from his destroying of Princess Leia's precious Alderaan, to his many exchanges
03:36 with the menacing Darth Vader - a fact that will likely change the way you look at this
03:40 unsettling portrayal in A New Hope forever.
03:43 6.
03:45 Porgs Were Actually A Way Of Disguising A Problem - The Last Jedi
03:49 Whether you love them or loathe them, there's still little arguing with the fact that The
03:52 Last Jedi's porgs definitely stole more than their fair share of headlines in the lead-up
03:57 and in the wake of Episode VIII's release.
03:59 Yet the act's own natives weren't actually part of Rian Johnson's original Star Wars
04:03 plan out of the gate, with creature concept designer Jake Lunt-Davis eventually informing
04:08 StarWars.com that their inception was brought about thanks to a real-life stumbling block.
04:12 With the location of Skellig Michael used for Acto being home to hundreds of puffins
04:17 that couldn't be physically removed from the wildlife preserve, the director thought
04:20 of a genius way of disguising the fact his set had been overrun by the feathered creatures.
04:25 As Davis would explain, "You can't remove them.
04:28 You physically can't get rid of them.
04:30 And digitally removing them is an issue and a lot of work.
04:33 So let's just roll with it, play with it."
04:35 And so I think he thought, 'Well, that's great, let's have our own indigenous species.'
04:39 So there's a good chance that whenever you spot a porg on Acto, there's likely a real-life
04:43 puffin hiding underneath it, wondering what all these cameras and Jedi were doing in the
04:47 back garden.
04:49 5.
04:50 THREE WOOKIES CAME FROM ONE SUIT – THE PHANTOM MENACE
04:53 The Galactic Senate Chamber held within the Senate Rotunda saw a number of surprising
04:58 races make an unexpected cameo over the years.
05:01 And among the likes of ETs, a Sojouan species popping up in the chamber in The Phantom Menace,
05:06 fans were quick to spot Chewbacca's beloved race of furry warriors by the name of the
05:10 Wookies.
05:11 However, what wasn't as easily spotted was the fact that this was actually just one actor
05:14 dumped into a single Wookiee suit.
05:17 Said performer then executed three different variations of the scene, and the costume's
05:21 hair was slightly adjusted each time to fool audiences into believing a number of furry
05:25 extras had been brought in for the shoot.
05:27 Also, instead of creating a brand new Wookiee costume from scratch for this fleeting cameo,
05:32 Chewbacca's costume from the original trilogy was dusted off for the sequence.
05:35 With Creature Effects supervisor Nick Dubman later noting, "When the shots were put together,
05:39 we ended up with three different Wookies out of one suit."
05:42 4.
05:44 CHRISTOPHER LEE USED A DOUBLE DURING MOST OF HIS FIGHT – REVENGE OF THE SITH
05:48 Despite coming in at the ripe old age of 79 around the time of Attack of the Clones shoot,
05:53 that still couldn't stop the unstoppable Christopher Lee from getting in on some of
05:56 the sword fighting action when it came to his climactic showdown with Anakin Skywalker,
06:00 Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda.
06:02 Away from the close-up beat that saw Lee's Count Dooku very much swinging his lightsaber
06:06 at the likes of Ewan McGregor and co, though, episode two also relied on a stunt double
06:10 for some of the more impressive manoeuvres seen in the wider shots of the duels.
06:14 Then, said performer's face was ultimately digitally replaced with Lee's in post-production.
06:18 With Lee racking up a few more years in the lead-up to shooting on the follow-up, this
06:22 digital replacement technique was once again utilised as a way of convincing audiences
06:26 they were actually seeing the proficient swordsman strut his curved lightsaber stuff.
06:31 3.
06:32 Carrie Fisher's Hair and Clothes Were Digitally Altered - The Rise of Skywalker
06:37 News of Carrie Fisher's tragic passing in late 2016 cast understandable doubts over
06:41 the future of her equally beloved character of Leia Organa in a sequel trilogy that was
06:45 well underway at that point.
06:47 Refusing to simply have the character be dispatched off-screen, though, J.J. Abrams instead opted
06:51 to recycle footage he'd already shot of the unmistakable princess during The Force
06:55 Awakens for the Force-sensitive figure's emotional last showing in the series.
07:00 Along with this utilising of old Fisher material, the whizzes at ILM were able to combine the
07:04 live-action shots of Fisher's face with a completely digital character.
07:09 This ultimately aided the team in giving Leia a look that was completely distinct to Episode
07:13 9, adding a little extra grey into her latest legendary hairstyle and a whole new costume
07:18 in post-production in their bid to stave off the weird visual for appearing exactly as
07:22 she did in Episodes 7 and 8.
07:24 And it is a testament to ILM's remarkable work that next to no-one realised said icon's
07:29 final hairstyle and outfit of choice were entirely computer-generated.
07:32 2.
07:33 Matt's Paintings in Hansen Empire – The Empire Strikes Back
07:39 While the likes of Disney+'s The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi were
07:43 all afforded the luxury of the state-of-the-art LED volume when it came time to add some cinematic
07:48 depth to many a space-age scene in recent times, the folks behind the first few flickers
07:53 of this galaxy far, far away had to think outside the box.
07:56 Seen in the elegant horizon of Bespin's Cloud City, and within an imperial hangar
08:00 boasting an embarrassment of Stormtrooper riches, utterly mesmerising Matt's Paintings
08:05 were often used to fool fans into believing they were witnessing a larger-than-life set
08:09 being captured on film, brilliantly lacing the feature players and moving spacecraft
08:13 into the scenario in post-production.
08:15 The fact some of the most impressive locations ever committed to the Skywalker saga were
08:19 handcrafted by any mortal, though admittedly freakishly talented, human still needs to
08:24 be seen to be believed.
08:26 1.
08:27 Pedro Pascal didn't physically appear in one episode, "The Mandalorian"
08:32 It may have been a little bit disheartening to realise that his big break in the Star
08:36 Wars universe would largely be playing out underneath a clunky Beskar helmet, but the
08:40 reality of Pedro Pascal being hidden for much of his time in the Din Djarin's saddle did
08:44 actually come in rather handy when he suddenly found himself unable to rock up on set due
08:48 to some prior commitments.
08:50 As revealed by "The Mandalorian" Chapter 4 director Bryce Dallas Howard to Vulture,
08:54 the star of the show wasn't available to shoot on her "Sanctuary" episode due to
08:58 the fact he was in rehearsals for King Lear on Broadway, as you do.
09:02 This had next-to-no impact on the shoot itself, mind, with Mando Stunt Doubles Brendan Wayne
09:06 and Lateef Crowder both pitching in to bring the titular Mandalorian to life over the course
09:10 of the series.
09:11 Wayne was able to easily embody the presence throughout Chapter 4, while Pascal would also
09:16 add his dialogue into the mix later down the line.
09:18 Simply put, and as Howard herself would summarise, this mysterious Mandalorian is a real collaboration.
