00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:20 up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Bartholomew Hall and here is what to expect on this Friday,
00:26 1st December. Ram's Gate in the mix as Kent prepares for
00:32 round two of the FA Cup. He's coming to town, Santa fun runs set for Chatham's historic
00:39 dockyard and action replay. We look again at pictures and videos sent in by you, the
00:45 KMTV viewers, getting active. But before we get to all of that, we begin
00:51 this evening with a round-up of the headlines and some sad news to start us off. A Bay Point
00:56 and Margate FC player, Michael Britt, passed away on Thursday night, just two days before
01:01 his 21st birthday. The young player started playing for Margate
01:06 at just six years old. Both clubs have shared heartfelt tributes to the young player, who
01:11 has been described as a born leader and a genuine good guy. Margate have confirmed that
01:17 their under-23s fixture against Staplehurst Monarchs will go ahead in Michael's memory
01:22 this evening, with the home game free for all supporters.
01:27 On to cricket, and Kent Cricket's head coach Matt Walker says County Championship Division
01:32 2 winners Durham will be a force to be reckoned with next year. Durham ploughed through to
01:38 the division title this summer, having only lost once in competitive four-day matches
01:42 and finishing 66 points ahead of second-placed Worcestershire. Kent, however, only managed
01:49 to stay in Division 1 of the series on the final day, thanks to Nottinghamshire knocking
01:53 out Middlesex. Walker says the recent promotees are going to be a very strong and challenging
01:59 side.
02:00 Sheppey's swimming star of the 60s, Lunda Ludgrove, has spoken out about how being dropped
02:06 from the final of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics has left her feeling frustrated. Once one
02:13 of Britain's most recognisable athletes, Ms Ludgrove has told Kent Online that she is
02:17 still angry today after being told on the eve of the competition almost 60 years ago
02:24 that she was dropped for disciplinary reasons. It later emerged that her father wrote to
02:28 the ASA to try and understand the situation and that her being dropped was for sporting
02:33 reasons despite being the fastest swimmer in the squad. Lunda now believes that the
02:38 decision led to her missing out on what could have been an Olympic gold and being recognised
02:43 as an MBE.
02:44 Gosh, I think, well, winning the gold, that's lovely because when you have the national
02:49 anthem played for you, that is very nice. And meeting the Queen, that was very lovely.
02:56 And meeting other personalities of theatre and royalty and things like that, it just
03:03 goes on. And having my own Madame Tussauds.
03:07 And what is the biggest regret in your career?
03:11 I think it's not knowing why, of all I'd done for Great Britain and England, why I never
03:17 got an MBE or an OBE for what I achieved. Never knew.
03:25 Now FA Cup fever is once again sweeping the county this weekend as Round 2 gets underway
03:30 and Kent has three sides still running in the competition. Set to take on his second
03:36 game in charge of Gillingham in the competition against South East rivals Charlton, Stephen
03:40 Clements says he knows his team will have to put up their game to pull off a Cup shock
03:45 this Saturday. Looking to match their run last year when the Gilles got to Round 3 of
03:50 the competition against Leicester City, Gillingham will have to overcome a team that they lost
03:54 3-1 in a pre-season friendly this year. Here's how Clements shapes up the job ahead of him.
04:00 Big FA Cup game, should be nearly a sell-out here at our home stadium. I think it will
04:08 be a really good atmosphere and the lads are really, really looking forward to it. I would
04:12 have thought that we would probably go into the game as the underdogs in this one. Charlton
04:17 are in the top half of League 1 at the moment. They're on a good little runner form themselves
04:22 since the new manager has come in. It will be a difficult game but it's one that as a
04:27 player you should be relishing and looking to take on an opponent from the high division.
04:32 The biggest underdog story across the competition belongs to Ramsgate who will face Wimbledon
04:37 in what will be the club's first ever appearance in the second round of the FA Cup. Their league
04:43 two opponents Wimbledon have won the trophy before, albeit in a previous iteration of
04:48 the team. So today to balance things out, children at the Hartston Academy in Thanet
04:53 were treated to a very special visit from the Cup itself. I should say it was actually
04:58 earlier this week. I went to find out. The FA Cup, 6.3 kilograms of silver, wrapped in
05:05 tonnes of football history and previously held by some of the sport's greatest. Seen
05:11 here held by former Medway school boy Chris Smalling when he won with Manchester United
05:16 in 2016. Ahead of Ramsgate FC's first ever foray into the second round of the competition,
05:23 the Cup itself has been on tour, stopping here today at Hartstown Academy, which just
05:29 so happens to be the workplace of Rams manager and school deputy head Ben Smith. I think
05:35 it breeds belief and confidence that local people can have success. If I go back to the
05:44 game against Woking, one of the goal scorers was TJ Jadama, ex-student of Hartstown Academy.
05:52 So it's nice to show students that actually this is an ex-student here. Hopefully they
05:59 can be the next TJ and not only a fantastic player but a fantastic role model for the
06:05 work he does in the local community, his coaching. So it's great to show what our alumni can
06:12 achieve. Yeah, it feels surreal coming back to the old school where it all started and
06:17 speaking to the teachers, seeing some of them here. We used to talk about the FA Cup loads
06:21 in school so it feels good to bring it back here and have it for the community. So I know
06:27 a lot of the kids that go to this school and way back when I was here I didn't think I'd
06:31 be at this point but obviously we've worked hard to get where we are and yeah, hopefully
06:36 for them and for some of our family we get to the next round and get through. And with
06:40 a capacity away crowd set to travel to Wimbledon this Monday, many of these youngsters will
06:46 be left to watch the game live on TV. I think it's brilliant how far they've come and how
06:52 much further they can go. You can look up to them and use them as a role model. I've
06:56 had about three and a half thousand people ask me for tickets so yeah, there's been massive
07:01 response from all the fans. It's just the pubs, all the local pubs are showing it live.
07:11 There's so many people interested in it. It's just everywhere in the local area, even outside
07:17 the local area everyone's talking about it. You can't get physically much closer to the
07:21 Cup than this but in terms of football, well Ramsgate have never been this close either.
07:26 If they beat Wimbledon on Monday, well they'll be even one more step closer to the FA Cup.
07:32 Bartholomew Hall for KMTV in Thanet.
07:36 What an amazing trophy. I think everybody, absolutely everybody there enjoyed seeing
07:40 it and took some pictures with it too. But of course, back to Ramsgate. How did we get
07:45 here? Well, here's a reminder just how extraordinary Ramsgate's underdog story has been so far.
07:53 Ramsgate have played seven games in the FA Cup so far this season with an amazing run
07:58 to show for it. Like beating Chatham Town, Ithsmian League rivals 5-1 and facing Cray
08:05 Wanderers twice with a combined nine goals in both of their meetings. But things got
08:10 all the more serious with a 1-0 upset over AFC Totten which granted the Rams a spot in
08:16 the first round proper for the first time in 18 years. Where a sellout crowd of 3,000
08:23 arrived at Southwood Stadium to see Ramsgate take on a side 62 places above them in the
08:28 form of Woking. Coming from a goal down in the first 15 minutes, it was Lee Martin who
08:34 scored the winner that sent the Thanet ground into raptures with just 15 seconds to go.
08:40 Dreams achieved and history made as Ramsgate won a tie against AFC Wimbledon for what will
08:45 be the club's first ever round two appearance.
08:49 Ahead of the game, manager Ben Smith says that he's been watching the opposition, they're
08:53 even going along to watch their recent League Two game against Gillingham.
08:57 "It's nice to see up close and personal who you're up against. They're massive favourites
09:03 for the game but we retain some belief. Stranger things have happened than Ramsgate beating
09:13 Wimbledon. We know what's ahead of us in terms of it's a tough opposition but we're not fearful
09:20 of it. We're looking to go there and embrace it and play the way we play."
09:25 Before reaching the second round proper, the Rams have scored a total of 19 goals, nine
09:31 of which were scored by striker Joe Taylor, who is currently in the running for the Golden
09:35 Ball.
09:36 "I'm still one goal behind the guy at the top but he's out of the competition so obviously
09:42 it's playing a part in it. It's something that's just for me personally but as a team
09:48 it's all my first thoughts are for the team and trying to progress. I know we've got a
09:55 really hard game coming up but if I can nick a goal then I'll be at the top of the list
09:59 and obviously as a striker I'm thinking about it."
10:02 So with Plough Lane and South West London waiting, Ramsgate are sure to bring 100% as
10:08 they continue this sensational underdog story.
10:14 Now with a draw set to take place this Sunday, we'll have to wait until Monday to see how
10:19 Ramsgate do but they'll already know who they could potentially face in round three so exciting
10:25 stuff ahead.
10:26 And with all that in mind, let's now take a look at this weekend's full fixture list.
10:32 As you've been hearing we have three games coming up but this weekend, before the weekend
10:37 is out, it's just two. Gillingham will welcome Charlton at Priestfield, 47 places between
10:42 them, this game taking place on Saturday.
10:44 In the National League, Epsom Fleet are looking for their first back-to-back win as they take
10:48 on Kidderminster for the second time this season. The Fleet found three goals in a clean
10:53 sheet when they last met at home and will be hoping for much the same this time around.
10:57 Havant and Waterlooville will welcome Dover Athletic, a critical game for the Whites in
11:02 their battle to avoid relegation with only one win on the board this season but in visiting
11:06 the only team lower than them in the National South, they'll be hoping to double that tally
11:11 whilst Tunbridge are visiting Torquay.
11:15 And finally, in the premier of the Izmir League, after a 2-2 draw with Bognor Regis in the
11:20 midweek, Margate will now head to Enfield at the weekend, whilst second place Chatham
11:25 Town will visit Haringey and focus on Invicta with new manager Andy Drury looking to get
11:30 his first win as full-time boss.
11:34 Now we have reached half-time, which means it's time for a break, but coming up we'll
11:39 have the Santa fun run down at Chatham's historic dockyard. I spoke with the president of the
11:45 Rotary Club of Medway all about the excitement of having 200 adults dressed as Santa running
11:51 through that historic place in Medway. All that and plenty more coming up after this
11:56 break.
