00:01 - Wow, you sure got a thing for candy canes,
00:04 don't you Chris?
00:05 - Yeah, all hand carved.
00:07 - Cute.
00:08 - It's not first place cute, but it's cute.
00:10 - My husband creates a plan to like get out there
00:14 and if you're gonna play that game,
00:15 I'm gonna play that game right back with you.
00:17 - Every year, our block goes all out for Christmas.
00:20 The competition's got a lot of money on the line.
00:22 This year, the stakes are higher than ever.
00:23 - You have my attention.
00:24 He's all about the contest and the money
00:27 and he needs to learn a lesson or two.
00:29 - Ignore all the fine print.
00:31 Honestly, it's like you're signing your life away.
00:33 - All right, and action.
00:41 - I'm a big Christmas person.
00:43 When I was a kid, we would drive through
00:46 those great neighborhoods with these amazing decorations
00:50 and then we found out about the candy cane lane phenomenon
00:54 where there'd be a block in El Segundo.
00:56 Whoa, you gotta go down there,
00:58 you gotta see what they're doing.
00:59 So it was something I always had a deep appreciation for,
01:04 for myself and for my family.
01:06 - The tradition started on the lane in 1949.
01:12 Part of the inspiration for this movie came
01:13 when years ago, my parents moved there
01:15 and my dad, who had a woodworking shop,
01:18 thought this was great,
01:19 so he's gonna get all in on the action.
01:21 - Kelly Younger was riding from experience.
01:27 His father was a truck driver,
01:28 but had an incredible artistic side.
01:30 He was a real folk artist who handmade
01:33 all these amazing ornaments and really had a big impact
01:37 on every other house.
01:38 - And so their house got featured in the local paper.
01:43 And so there was a little rivalry.
01:45 That's kind of what gave me the sort of initial idea
01:48 for this story.
01:49 - It wasn't just buying store-bought stuff.
01:51 It was, he was really expressing himself
01:54 and that joy in his heart was spreading
01:57 through the whole neighborhood.
01:58 - Opening night of "Candy Cane Lane,"
02:04 all of El Segundo comes out.
02:06 Everyone walks down to the lane.
02:08 There's a band that is playing.
02:10 Everybody's out and dressed up.
02:12 The El Segundo fire department brings out the trucks.
02:15 Santa rides on top of the fire truck.
02:17 Eventually he'll get out
02:18 and he'll walk in front of the fire truck.
02:20 - Merry Christmas!
02:22 (laughing)
02:23 - And then Santa walks along the lane
02:25 and he points to houses.
02:27 And when he points, it magically lights the house up.
02:30 I have been seeing you as Santa for years,
02:33 as have my kids.
02:34 - Merry Christmas, Santa!
02:35 - How long have you been doing it?
02:37 - I believe it's been 33, 34 years.
02:41 - We're like, let's get the El Segundo Santa
02:44 to be the Santa in the movie.
02:46 And he got out there and he's got the moves.
02:49 Pow!
02:50 - Has there ever been a mishap where a house
02:51 didn't turn on when you pointed at him?
02:53 - Almost every year.
02:54 - Oh good, okay.
02:55 (laughing)
02:57 - Man, come on brother man.
03:03 You must not pay your light bills.
03:04 Oh, here's the hot chocolate.
03:07 Here's the peppermint.
03:09 Oh, look at that Christmas tree.
03:10 And wow, look at all these homemade decorations.
03:14 There's rivalries.
03:15 There's a little friendly competition between neighbors.
03:18 Oh, it's this one right here.
03:19 This is really kind of a love letter to El Segundo.
03:21 It's such a fun but unique little town
03:24 because it is a beach community,
03:26 but we're also near a refinery,
03:28 a water treatment plant, the airport.
03:31 We never get snow, but we celebrate the holidays
03:34 almost more because of that, because the weather is good
03:36 and we can be out every single night
03:38 walking down on the lane.
03:39 - While El Segundo has an incredible one,
03:41 everywhere in the United States has a candy cane.
03:45 And we have been researching and grabbing elements
03:47 from all of them.
03:48 As big as the candy cane lane phenomenon is now,
03:52 I cannot wait till the year after this movie comes out
03:55 to make a popular thing
03:58 that's happening all over the country.
