00:00 "Release the Kraken!"
00:02 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at powerful monsters from myth, legend, and mythopoiesis.
00:08 "Cthulhu, banish them to a dark oblivion, please!"
00:11 [Dragon roars]
00:13 [Screaming]
00:15 [Music]
00:17 Number 10. Vampires.
00:19 You might not consider vampires in the same vein as other ancient mythological powerhouses,
00:24 but these relatively modern creatures of the night pack quite the punch.
00:28 "Taking on a vampire at night is a mission for morons and fools, which are you?"
00:33 They can transform into bats and fly, hypnotize others, and fend off adversaries with insane amounts of strength.
00:40 Oh, and then there's of course the sucking your blood.
00:43 "I will take no refusal."
00:46 Sure, there may be a decent amount of ways to counter vampires,
00:49 but these nocturnal animals know how to work around their weaknesses.
00:53 Plus, the most infamous vampire of them all, Dracula, is still terrifying us all today.
00:59 [Screaming]
01:01 You do not want these undead creatures chasing after you.
01:05 "I'm a vampire! I'm a vampire! I'm a vampire! I'm a vampire!"
01:11 Number 9. Medusa.
01:13 Medusa is a creature who will stop you right in your tracks, but that's hardly a good thing.
01:18 [Screaming]
01:20 Anyone who looks at this dangerous gorgon is quickly turned into stone.
01:25 Medusa is quite the looker, but anyone who has snakes for hair is bound to turn heads.
01:30 Medusa has turned countless men and women into stone.
01:33 It's an ability so iconic and so powerful, it works even from beyond the grave.
01:38 [Screaming]
01:51 When Medusa was finally slain by Perseus,
01:53 he used her decapitated head as a weapon to change enemies into stone.
01:58 Now that's one way to get ahead.
02:00 [Screaming]
02:03 Number 8. Apep.
02:05 "Apophis was greatly feared for his ferocity, his power, and the threat of his uprising."
02:11 This monstrous serpent has some serious pep in his step.
02:14 Jokes aside, Apep is one of the biggest final bosses of Egyptian mythology.
02:19 Considered to be the embodiment of pure chaos, his sole mission is to combat the sun god Ra.
02:25 Whereas Ra could be seen representing all that is light,
02:28 you could argue Apep is all that represents complete darkness.
02:32 Apep and Ra have fought many times, and while Ra is usually the victor, Apep never truly goes away.
02:39 "Ra and his followers would slash through the snake's underbelly and pass him undeterred."
02:45 This is a serpent so unhinged that he's even tried devouring the sun.
02:50 We don't recommend including the sun as part of your balanced breakfast,
02:53 but if Apep's hungry, us mere mortals sure as heck aren't gonna be able to stop him.
02:58 "His sheer power and determination to defeat Ra greatly illustrated the Egyptian's fear of a world
03:05 plunged in darkness and anarchy."
03:08 Number 7. The Chupacabra
03:10 "Pablo, looks like someone sucked the blood out of our goats!"
03:13 "Who the hell would do that?"
03:14 The Chupacabra is one scary beast.
03:16 Originating from Latin American folklore, although some claim it really originated in a 1995 movie,
03:22 the Chupacabra is a strong mythical creature known for feasting on livestock.
03:27 "Ducks, rabbits, chickens, pigs, and yes, goats,
03:30 were all said to have been killed by a grotesque creature."
03:33 Its name even translates to "goat sucker."
03:36 Chupacabras are fit with blood-red eyes, incredibly sharp fangs,
03:40 and can chase down prey at frighteningly fast speeds.
03:44 Chupacabras are truly some of the most vicious monsters that won't ever hold back.
03:49 Not only are they rabbit hunters, they're also kinda like vampires too
03:54 since they're known to suck the blood of the livestock they consume.
03:57 Great, 'cause they just couldn't be more scary already?
04:00 "I'm a Chupacabra, legendary creature, tiny ass goat, you know I'm gonna eat ya!"
04:06 Number 6. Werewolves
04:07 Who doesn't love a good werewolf?
04:10 Yeah, they'll probably shred you to bits if you ever get too close, but they just look so cool!
04:19 Werewolves are ingrained in pop culture today,
04:22 but they also date back to many myths including those from ancient Greece.
04:26 When King Lycaon tried feeding slain kids to Zeus,
04:30 it went about as well as you would expect.
04:32 Zeus turned him and his entire lineage into what we now know as werewolves.
04:37 Werewolves are not only strong, but they're also fast, agile,
04:40 and can tear through practically anything with their claws and teeth.
04:44 "There's something going on out there."
04:47 While they can be put down by silver bullets, you better hope you have a whole bunch of them,
04:52 because these beasts do not go down without a fight.
04:55 Number 5. Surtur
05:02 "My time has come. When my crown is reunited with eternal flame,
05:07 I shall be restored to my full might."
05:10 With Surtur, you kinda know what you're gonna get.
05:12 You can't look at this demonic creature made of pure fire
05:15 and think he's anything less than a juggernaut.
05:17 "You destroyed everything, everyone, but not me. Fight me now!"
05:24 According to Norse mythology, Surtur is a fire giant who guards the realm of Muspelheim.
05:31 Besides looking very intimidating,
05:33 he also has a massive sword made out of fire that only makes him more formidable.
05:37 Surtur also serves a purpose.
05:40 Just like the monstrous wolf Fenrir, Surtur is said to play a pivotal part in Ragnarok,
05:45 a major cataclysmic event that will destroy the world.
05:48 That's kind of really depressing actually.
05:51 "I cannot die, not until I fulfill my destiny and lay waste to your home."
05:57 But hey, at least we know Surtur's definitely not a chump.
06:00 Number 4. The Kraken
06:02 "There's no use, you run aground."
06:04 "No, beneath us. Foul breath."
06:12 If you had any plans for sailing the high seas,
06:15 you might want to reconsider after you learn about this monster.
06:18 The Kraken is a massive squid-like creature that wreaks pure havoc on any that venture out
06:23 into the ocean. With its size and strength, it can toss around the heaviest of ships like
06:27 their small toys. The Kraken has also had plenty of life in pop culture,
06:32 with many films providing new takes on the mythos.
06:34 "What the... monster! Monster!"
06:38 "You're gods, man."
06:41 Regardless of whatever changes the lore may go through,
06:44 the Kraken at its most basic form is nothing short of a nightmare that'll make you seasick.
06:48 Number 3. The Fahen
06:52 "His face scarred with one dead eye. I drew my sword."
06:58 "Once right, his sword shattered."
07:03 Half the body, twice the fright. That pretty much sums up the Fahen.
07:07 A famous monster of Scottish legend, the Fahen is said to only have a single leg,
07:12 arm, and eye, despite having a severely limited set of body parts.
07:16 The Fahen is deceptively strong. It often carries a heavy club, which it uses to attack foes.
07:22 And while it might not be a power, its haunting appearance that can no doubt
07:30 terrify anyone is undeniably a strength for this monster.
07:34 This is a mythical beast that truly makes the most out of what it has to work with,
07:38 and honestly, we kind of have to respect that.
07:41 "There will be consequences!"
07:42 "I'll take my chances."
07:43 "Sword, sharpen, now!"
07:45 Number 2. Cthulhu
07:47 Maybe no monster has persisted in the way that Cthulhu has.
07:51 "The dark god Cthulhu continues his rampage of destruction and terror,
07:56 and there seems to be no hope for man."
07:58 This cosmic horror from the mind of author H.P. Lovecraft has remained an incredibly popular
08:02 horror icon, and we can see why. Cthulhu is not just powerful. He's so powerful that just
08:09 trying to think about it for too long can drive you mad.
08:11 "But they serve as symbols of unknowable cosmic forces."
08:15 He's a horror we mere humans just can't quite comprehend.
08:18 This monster has gained a following unlike any other we've seen.
08:22 Cthulhu isn't just some scary tentacle monster,
08:25 he is an eldritch being with a chokehold on the universe.
08:29 "They lie awake in the dark ever watching, hidden under the earth's crust and beneath
08:34 the ocean's depths, and can still be contacted."

08:51 Number 1. Typhon
08:55 Many of the most famous monsters of Greek mythology were born from Typhon and Echidna.
09:01 In Greek mythology, Typhon is considered the father of all monsters. That means everyone
09:07 from the Gorgon Medusa to the snake monster Hydra can trace their lineage back to him.
09:11 And Typhon is powerful too in his own right. He's half human, half serpent, and all nightmares.
09:18 Was a primordial giant, born of Gaia, described as having a hundred vicious heads
09:24 that spat fire and venom. Besides being scary,
09:28 if you needed an indicator of just how influential he is, Typhoons are even named directly after him.
09:34 "If this system moves south, we could see a wind-driven storm surge that could threaten
09:39 the entire eastern seaboard." While there are countless amounts of powerful monsters,
09:45 many of them simply wouldn't be here if it weren't for Typhon.
09:48 "The spawn of Typhon and Echidna's union reigns supreme among the monsters of mythology."
09:54 Well, Typhon and his wife Echidna. He must get a lot of gifts on Father's Day.
09:59 Is there a mythological monster we missed? Flex their strengths down in the comments.
10:03 "This is my crown. The source of my power. Oh, that's a crown. I thought it was a big eyebrow."
