Miguel Ángel Cañedo's Fatal Crash @ Bien Aparecida 1989 (Aftermath)

Shortly after the start of the Subida a la Bien Aparecida, in Cántabria, northern Spain, the Ford Fiesta XR2 entered by the Escuderia Villa de Llanes, driven by the Spanish driver Ceferino Caso went out of control on the approach to a sharp and dangerous bend known as "curvatona". The car spun off the road and hit a group of spectators, killing one of them, Miguel Ángel Cañedo from Cántabria region, who died on the spot.

The race was temporarily suspended to transport by ambulance and by helicopter the five injured persons to the Hospital Nacional Marqués de Valdecilla in Santander. Amongst them was Cañedo's ten-year-old son, which name was not released. The other injured spectators were Ricardo Palacios Peña, 16, and his cousin Roberto Pérez Peña; Aurora Sacedo González, 25, and Miguel Mesones Lavid, age unknown.

A former race car driver, the victim Miguel Ángel Cañedo had already participated in the previous editions of the hillclimb. The event, held near the small town of Ampuero, Cántabria, Spain, was a round of the 1989 Spanish Hillclimb Championship. After the hillclimb resumed, Pancho Egozkue in a Osella - BMW was the winner in 1min43sec04 at an average speed of 139,07 km/h.
