Co-driver to Jacques Casabianca in a Group N Peugeot 205 Rallye, Thierry Carli lost his life as a result of an accident which occurred during a fifth special stage of the sixth edition of the Critérium Sainte-Baume-Provence, on night of Saturday, 15 April 1989.

The event was a round of the 1989 Coupe de France des Rallyes (French Rally Cup), held in Var department, southern France. The car driven by Casabianca went out of control, left the road and crashed into a tree on the co-driver side. Casabianca escaped serious injuries in the crash, Thierry Carli, 26-year-old from Ajaccio, Corse, was killed almost instantly.

Thierry Carli and Jacques Casabianca competed together since two years. Earlier in 1989 the pair had taken a class victory, 21st place overall, in the Ronde du Celavo-Mezzana in the island of Corse, France, sharing the same Peugeot 205 Rallye.
