00:00 "We are one people, with one whim, one resolve, one cause."
00:06 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for commercials that were shocking,
00:11 disturbing, emotional, or unexpected.
00:14 But they all left us shaking our heads, unsure how to react.
00:18 "It's from Daddy."
00:23 Number 10.
00:24 Baby, PlayStation 3.
00:26 Okay, so the PlayStation Baby isn't Chucky.
00:29 "Hello John.
00:31 Over here.
00:34 Hi."
00:35 But as far as the creepy factor goes, it's not that many rungs down from the horror movie
00:42 icon himself.
00:43 When the robot baby doll opens its eyes and starts to coo, we're confused, but not creeped
00:49 out.
00:51 However, when the baby reaches out for the PlayStation 3 across the room, and his cute
00:58 giggles turn into adult male laughter, now things are getting weird.
01:03 Then there are the tears.
01:05 And what does any of this have to do with the PlayStation 3?
01:17 Number 9.
01:18 A certain gooey thing, Jammie Dodgers.
01:21 For those outside of the United Kingdom, Jammie Dodgers are a very popular British cookie
01:26 composed of two shortcake biscuits with either a raspberry or strawberry jam in between.
01:36 And just to be clear, neither flavor of jam is made with monkeys.
01:40 We feel the need to say that because of this commercial featuring a monkey with his head
01:43 surrounded by a cookie and his face poking out of the middle, where the jam would be
01:48 exposed on the actual biscuit.
01:58 And honestly, this wonderfully strange commercial mascot alone would be enough to leave us speechless.
02:04 But the commercial takes things a step further by having this monkey with the cookie head
02:08 play piano and sing a song called "A Certain Gooey Thing."
02:23 Number 8.
02:24 Polar Bear, Nissan Leaf.
02:30 When you get an electric car, yes, you will save lots of money on gas.
02:34 But you'll also be helping to save the planet.
02:37 At least, that's the angle Nissan took back in 2010 with this awesome commercial featuring
02:42 a polar bear.
02:43 After witnessing the melting of his surroundings, the polar bear in the ad leaves his home and
02:47 makes the long, solitary journey into the city.
02:51 It is there that he finds a man about to get into his Nissan Leaf and, well, let's just
02:55 say that if you've never gotten choked up during a commercial before, get ready for
02:59 that to change.
03:03 Number 7.
03:11 Never Say No To Panda, Panda Cheese.
03:19 In 2010, the Arab Dairy Company in Egypt released a series of commercials for their product,
03:25 Panda Cheese.
03:26 The ads featured a large, menacing panda who would, shall we say, not take kindly to people
03:32 saying no to eating panda cheese.
03:44 The panda didn't talk but instead used his aggressive actions to make his point, leaving
03:49 the people in the scene speechless.
03:51 And the ads did the same to us, although in more of a shocking and humorous way, as opposed
03:56 to the fear-based speechlessness of the folks in the commercials.
04:06 Number 6.
04:08 Banana Man, Dole.
04:14 The Banana Man is a guy with bananas for fingers, bananas sticking out of his ears and nose,
04:20 and a couple of bananas on his head.
04:22 It sounds like something created during a fever dream, and you know what?
04:26 Maybe it is.
04:31 But it's also the main character of this Japanese commercial for Dole Bananas.
04:35 Oh, and let's not forget about the fact that he has a banana spidey sense that lets
04:40 him know when someone is sad and an ability to cheer them up by shooting bananas out of
04:44 his nose and into their lap.
04:53 Number 5.
04:54 This is a special time, Little Baby's Ice Cream.
05:05 Little Baby's Ice Cream was a Philadelphia-based ice cream company that shut down operations
05:09 in 2019.
05:10 However, prior to going out of business, they had been known just as much for their very
05:14 different commercials as for their different specialty flavors.
05:18 The most viral of these commercials was their 2012 ad in which a man covered in ice cream
05:23 spoons it off his head and eats it while his voiceover recounts the virtues of said ice
05:28 cream.
05:29 Also, start watching and you'll notice that the man has his eyes wide open and doesn't
05:41 blink, drawing you into some creepy, unexpected staring contest.
05:45 We dare you to look away.
05:56 Number 4.
05:57 Teddy Bear - Duracell If you've never seen this commercial before,
06:10 knowing that it's called Teddy Bear probably has you expecting some sentimentality… and
06:15 you sure aren't wrong in that assumption.
06:18 A father in the military sends a teddy bear home for his little girl.
06:21 Crying yet?
06:22 He records his voice saying "I love you, baby girl" whenever the girl squeezes the
06:26 bear.
06:31 How about now?
06:32 Well, if the tears haven't been jerked from your eyes just yet… wait.
06:37 Even the predictability of the ending didn't stop the flow of our sentimental waterworks.
06:41 And that was even before we knew that the ad was based on a true story.
06:53 Number 3.
06:54 Lemmings - Apple Seeing Apple on this list, you're probably
07:05 trying to think about which one of their great commercials we're going to talk about.
07:08 From their classic iPod ads to the iconic 1984 Super Bowl commercial, Apple has hit
07:14 more advertising high notes than almost any other company out there.
07:28 Which makes their 1985 Macintosh office Super Bowl ad, Lemmings, that much more shocking.
07:34 We get what they're trying to say.
07:36 But turns out, calling your potential customers blind lemmings, mindlessly following the herd
07:41 off of a cliff, is just a tad insulting and doesn't get people psyched to buy what you're
07:46 selling.
07:47 Number 2.
07:54 Unsung Hero - Thai Life Insurance
08:05 We all want to hate insurance companies for the high fees, problems getting paid out for
08:09 claims, etc.
08:11 But as much as we want to, it's almost impossible to hate the Thai Life Insurance company after
08:15 watching this commercial.
08:17 This one clocks in at 3 minutes in length.
08:27 And while the first couple are heartwarming and sweet, there's an unexpectedly moving
08:31 moment at the 2-minute mark that begins the emotional crescendo of the ad.
08:35 It's a moment that leaves the people in the scene speechless and did the same for
08:40 us for the final 60 or so seconds of the commercial.
09:08 Number 1.
09:12 Lamp - IKEA At least with the teddy bear commercial, we
09:23 could somewhat expect a tugging of our heartstrings.
09:26 But this IKEA ad is about a lamp.
09:28 How could a lamp make us feel the warm and fuzzies?
09:31 Is it because we're crazy?
09:33 Well, that's what the guy with the Swedish accent tells us at the end of this 60 seconds.
09:37 After we've been getting all choked up about the lamp alone on the curb.
09:49 This awesome commercial leaves us speechless twice.
09:52 First as we sit there actually feeling bad for a lamp.
09:55 And then as we're hysterically called out on said feelings by the commercial itself.
10:07 You don't need the power of speech, just the power of typing.
10:10 To leave us a comment and let us know what you thought of these ads.
10:24 Thanks for watching.
