00:00 A dreaded return to pick through what's left of the family home in Marijanap, around 30
00:09 kilometres north of Perth.
00:10 There's nothing left now. Everything is on the floor here.
00:15 Johan Catharine's mum arrived in Perth for a holiday on Wednesday. By the time they got
00:20 back from the airport, the flames and winds began to pick up, forcing a swift evacuation.
00:27 They only grabbed a handful of things.
00:29 We did take it lightly. People offered to help us to pick things up and we said no,
00:36 we'll be alright. I think it's going to be alright.
00:38 Two days later, they're now counting the cost of that decision.
00:42 Computers, screens, all the toys for our kids, couches, tables.
00:50 It's going to be a difficult holiday period for at least 10 families who've lost homes.
00:56 And the race is on to reconnect hundreds of properties without power.
01:00 At least 100 power poles are down, but assessing the full extent of the damage will be challenging.
01:06 Western Power says it's working to reconnect properties in the area as a priority, but
01:11 says it could be several weeks before it's resolved.
01:14 It's not just about today, it's next week and the coming months where we will really
01:20 need to continue to pull together to support those affected families.
01:25 For Johan Cathrin and his family, that support will be crucial.
01:29 Hoping to put that behind us for Christmas for a while and my mum is here for only six
01:34 weeks.
01:35 Rebuilding a life certain to take much longer.
