00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. So the updated Tiguan arrived in Australia a little while back, but the Allspace has lagged behind it
00:06 But it is finally here. So today we're going to check it out. See if it's any good
00:10 This one here is one down from the top spec. It's called the Allspace Elegance
00:15 This is the diesel. So the 147 TDI specification. It's priced at just under
00:21 $60,000. That's too expensive. The whole range kicks off at around 45 grand
00:26 This competes with things like the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail
00:31 There really aren't too many seven-seat SUVs in this segment and a lot of people will cross shop this with stuff like
00:38 Sorento and Santa Fe that are that one step above in terms of size. Today we're going to do a detailed review of this car
00:44 So if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of the review
00:46 You can use those time codes on the screen or if you're on YouTube
00:49 You can scroll down and use the chapters below. If you haven't done so already subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon because that's
00:54 Going to tell you every single time we review yet another silver car
00:57 So let's talk about the exterior
01:00 You've got six colors to pick from and depending on which one you pick it'll cost you between $900 and $1,100
01:07 So the Elegance, why do they call it the Elegance?
01:09 Well, it looks elegant
01:11 You can get the R-line which is one above this and that comes with like the R-line styling kit and all that sort of stuff
01:17 But I actually think this looks pretty good. This facelift that they have done for Tiguan
01:21 It's really sort of sharpened it up a bit and given it a little bit more presence out on the road
01:26 So down the front here, you've got chrome elements
01:29 Littered throughout that sort of grille section big Volkswagen logo
01:33 The new thing that I think is pretty cool is this LED strip that runs along the front here
01:38 It kind of connects the two headlight segments. I did notice though. This already has condensation building up in there
01:43 Which is really a good look in my opinion. Down at the bottom here
01:47 You've got a little bit more of that black finish and then your parking sensors nestled in a little bit of piano black through the
01:52 Center section there. So it is a pretty sort of subdued look but it does look stylish in my opinion
01:57 I've here headlights you get matrix LED headlights with LED daytime running lights LED indicators as well
02:04 Pretty decent headlight nighttime projection is good and the matrix LED function tends to work pretty well
02:10 Also with round to the side here down here. You've got a set of 19 inch alloy wheels
02:16 Now the R-line comes with a set of 20s. This is all 19s with adaptive damping
02:21 So I'm thinking this should actually ride pretty well. It's got a decent amount of sidewall rubber there, too
02:26 So we'll see how that goes
02:28 Wheel arch cladding because you know off-road vehicle except it's not really off-road
02:32 Actually, we did have one of these in our off-road comparison recently and you can watch that by clicking up there
02:38 It actually performed pretty well. I was surprised by how well it did
02:42 So there you go over here all space because the all space version is slightly larger than a regular
02:47 Tiguan with seven seats up the top here
02:49 You have an indicator built into that wing mirror and then a camera just down here for that 360 camera
02:55 You've got this chrome strip that runs along the top and the bottom section there roof rails
02:59 You have privacy glass and then whip around to the back. This is where the all space looks slightly different to a regular Tiguan
03:06 So it is longer so that accommodates your seven seats
03:09 And hopefully it means there is actually boot space behind the third row as well
03:13 For motion because this is an all-wheel drive vehicle and then all space badge down here as well
03:18 Tiguan lettering along the back there too. A little bit of chrome down the bottom here. They've concealed those exhaust pipes
03:24 They haven't tried to pretend like they exist. So let me know what you think about the design in the comment section below
03:30 Is it too sedate?
03:31 Would you go for the R line instead and they don't actually offer the all space in a full fat Tiguan R
03:38 Version, do you think they should? I think it'd be pretty fun
03:41 I did very much enjoy the Tiguan R when we drove that so let me know what you think in the comment section below
03:45 So we're inside the Tiguan all space. We'll start off with the keys. So you've got
03:50 lock, boot, unlock, Volkswagen logo on the back. Strangely, it still has a flip out key even though
03:57 Nothing here is really flip out operational except the door handles. So yeah
04:03 Anyway, proximity sensing keys you can leave that in your pocket
04:06 Once you're inside you have a push-button start just here. In terms of the design
04:10 It looks pretty much exactly the same as a regular Tiguan, which I think is a good thing
04:14 But I do feel the Tiguan interior is starting to feel a little bit dated and that is just because
04:19 This was more a facelift than a brand new generation when this came out
04:24 So there is a new Tiguan in the works and I think that will really debut all of the latest and greatest
04:31 sort of infotainment and
04:33 visual setup that we see in other Volkswagen products
04:36 So that is interesting stuff. Now in terms of the materials and stuff, it's all actually quite nice
04:41 So soft touch materials up the top there that swiping noise you hear is the infotainment system
04:46 Every time I wipe my hand past it, it sometimes works. There you go. But yeah, soft touch materials along the top there
04:52 There's faux wood inlay along the dashboard and also the doors. LED ambient lighting as well around the cabin
04:59 Minimal use of piano black, which is definitely a good thing. Now, what about your touch points?
05:05 So that is not too bad and then not too bad on the door as well
05:10 We've tested the surfaces with our
05:11 durometer if you do want to see how this car compares to other cars that we've tested before
05:15 Have a look at the link in the description below. Now, build quality
05:18 What is that like? So this feels really quite nice and solid. Door slam?
05:25 Hopefully this doesn't beep
05:29 In between beeps though, it sounds really good. Now moving on to infotainment
05:32 So you've got a 9.2 inch infotainment display
05:35 You can see there where my fingers get close to it
05:37 It brings up additional context menus. The whole logic behind that is that it's nice and clean when you don't need those menus
05:44 But it knows that you do want to access the menus as your finger gets closer and then it brings all the other stuff up
05:49 It also has that gesture control system. So I'll see if I can actually get that to work now
05:56 Okay, so it looks like it has to be above the screen and then it sometimes works
06:01 I really just don't like these systems because they work when you don't want them to work and when you do want them to work
06:07 They don't do anything. So it's a little bit disappointing
06:09 Um now in terms of your other functions in here on the radio front you have AM/FM
06:15 DAB digital radio. It's all plumbed through an 8 speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Sounds pretty good
06:21 So if you do like your sound you're gonna love that. In terms of smartphone mirroring
06:25 You have both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is what your Apple CarPlay looks like. So full screen integration
06:32 Wireless very nice and snappy and then this is what Android Auto looks like again full screen
06:38 Integration and super simple to use there as well and wireless too. In addition to all of that
06:44 You do have a screen ahead of the driver there as well. It's a 10.25 inch display
06:48 It's sort of similar to the other Volkswagen stuff
06:51 We've seen before but you can switch between a number of different views there
06:55 You can use inbuilt satellite navigation if you want and then you can supersize the screen too to bring up other context menus
07:02 Now moving on to safety tech you have autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection. You have an auto dimming rear vision mirror
07:09 There's a blind spot monitor built into that wing mirror
07:12 You have radar cruise control with lane departure warning, a lane keeping assistant
07:17 We're actually going to test this tech a little bit later on to see exactly how well it works
07:22 You have rear cross-traffic alert on the parking front
07:25 You have a semi-autonomous parking setup front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera as well
07:30 Let's have a look at the camera see how good that is
07:32 There it is there so the 360 camera
07:35 It's okay a little bit washed out around the sides there
07:38 But you can click on zones to see a little bit closer in and that's actually not too bad
07:42 We can see very clearly what's on the suitcase there
07:45 Steering wheel moves those guidelines as well. You've got a different set of modes here, too
07:51 So you've got a little parallel parking assistant
07:53 You have a trailer hitching mode and then a super wide angle mode for reversing out of tight spaces
07:59 But because it also has rear cross-traffic alert that will warn you as you approach those areas
08:04 There's the front camera and you can do the sides as well. So really nice setup there
08:08 Yeah, you can see the quality of that isn't amazing
08:10 But at least you do have coverage there on the sections that you need
08:14 So let's talk about practicality and we'll start with your connectivity. So you've got two USB C ports down the bottom here
08:20 There's a 12-volt outlet down there as well. That's where you'll find your wireless phone charger as well
08:24 So that's your charging hub
08:26 I guess you could say in terms of storing your phone it can sit down there on the wireless phone charger or you've got this
08:31 Really innovative section down here
08:32 So what you can do is
08:34 Snap these open as you go and then whack your phone in there and it sort of gives you a bit of versatility on storage
08:39 Same goes for your coffee cup. So this grips it really nicely
08:42 So you're not gonna have coffee spills everywhere as you go. That means you can progressively put larger bottles in there as well
08:49 So I'll see if it'll actually fit that. Yeah, look at that. That is fantastic
08:53 Bottles inside the doors. Yeah, no dramas for that
08:57 Big bottle too. No dramas there too. Awesome stuff. You have a little bit of storage just near the driver's knee
09:03 Then as we move our way around here
09:06 Storage is okay in there. It's quite deep but not sort of too big
09:10 This does move though so you can go forwards and backwards and then set yourself
09:13 Positions depending on how high you want it to be net down here and then glove box is pretty reasonably sized
09:20 RIPCD player that's where it used to go. It's air-conditioned as well
09:23 So you can leave that open if required now check this out
09:26 Not only do you have this front holder for two sets of sunglasses
09:30 You have a second cubby holder here for a whole bunch of other stuff
09:34 So yeah, pretty cool setup and a very clever use of that space because if you're not going to use that space for anything else
09:39 You may as well use it for storage. Now in comfort you have dual zone automatic climate control up the front here
09:45 You have heated and cooled seats for the front row. In addition to that you got a heated steering wheel
09:49 Electric seat adjustments so you can go forwards, backwards, backrest can go forwards, backwards
09:55 You can bring the front of the seat up and bring the back of the seat up
09:59 You can also adjust your lumbar support down here
10:01 But the driver and front passenger are electric and also have memory as well steering offers tilt and
10:08 Reach adjustment and then on our reach test all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving
10:14 It's worth calling out as well. The seats pretty comfy too. So long distance drives, they're gonna do your head in
10:19 So second row of Tiguan allspace. Knee room is excellent. Toe room is fantastic. Headroom is really good as well
10:27 So creature comforts you've got mat pockets here
10:30 You've got phone holders as well. This is where your third zone of climate control is controlled
10:37 There's also where your heated seats are controlled for the two outboard seats
10:41 You have a USB C slot and a 12-volt outlet as well
10:44 In terms of your other sort of bits and pieces
10:47 There's an interesting configuration here for the second row
10:50 I'll run you through that in a sec
10:51 But bottle holders in a center armrest there you got three of them including a piccolo holder
10:56 You can stick this inside the door as well without any dramas these seats actually have a little bit of movement to them
11:03 So you can slide this forward and backwards and it's a 60/40
11:08 Arrangement and that's because you want to afford yourself a little bit of extra room for the third row
11:14 Which will test out in just a second
11:15 You have ISO fix points and two outboard seats with three top tether points window test
11:21 It's auto down and auto up boom goes all the way down very impressed with that
11:26 Now third row the thing we know about this segment is the third rows are generally occasional use or pretty much just for kids
11:34 But I'll give it a shot anyway just to show you what it looks like
11:37 so there's two ways to get in one you can fold the row flat like that and climb over or
11:41 alternatively if you're not a
11:44 Calisthenics expert you can just roll this forward and slide it and then climb on in
11:51 All right, see how this goes so lift that up pull this back
11:57 Yeah, okay, so it is a really tight space here
12:02 Sean do you want to just move this row forward a touch we might actually just see how it goes
12:07 Just maybe one click forward. Yeah, that'll do
12:10 So yeah, there isn't a great deal of legroom down there and I'm pretty wedged into here. No headspace either
12:17 So this is very much just a kid zone, but you do have a cup holder here and a little bit of storage off to
12:23 The sides I think if you're a little kid
12:25 This would probably be a fun place to be seated for a little while but as an adult not so much
12:29 Now let's talk cargo space so powered tailgate
12:33 You have a little over 200 litres available here
12:38 You've got storage off to the sides and then under here you're gonna find a space saver spare tire
12:43 Plus your jack and other bits and pieces now have a look at this. I thought this was a pretty cool feature
12:48 You have a detachable torch here. So
12:50 When that's not in use it just acts as a light for the cabin, but then you can actually
12:55 Take it with you and light things up if you want to let's see how it goes fitting our bags in this space
13:02 if we can actually
13:04 Close that
13:06 See what happens if I try and close that
13:08 Just closes it and that's a medium-sized suitcase. So that's pretty cool. It means you can actually use it as a meaningful space
13:21 Let's drop our third row out of the way. So we pull these tabs up the top
13:26 Push that down. This is the annoying thing the seats don't actually go down
13:30 What they do it's a bit rough, but they don't come up if your second row is all the way back
13:36 But that reveals a space of 700 litres. You've got a 12-volt outlet buried just under there and one more time
13:42 I'll show you what the bags look like
13:44 Once that is all out of the way
13:46 So plenty of space there you can see how it is slightly bigger than a standard Tiguan there with that extra
13:52 Length to it. And finally if you do want to go supersized in terms of your space
13:57 You can drop the second row from here
14:02 And then you can lock those down all the way as well and that expands the space to about 1800 litres
14:07 So I've hit the road in the Tiguan all-space, you know what haven't driven a
14:14 diesel SUV like this in a little while a lot of them have been petrols or
14:19 Or bigger sort of diesels but four-cylinder diesel in an SUV haven't driven in a while
14:24 So it is interesting how quiet this is just immediately as we set off there
14:28 You can really just hear the refinement in the engine and it sounds like they've spent a fair bit of time
14:33 Making sure that noise doesn't come into the cabin. It is powered by a 2-litre turbocharged diesel engine
14:40 It makes a hundred and forty seven kilowatts of power and 400 Newton metres of torque
14:44 Which is where 147 TDI comes from and that's all mated to a seven speed wet clutch
14:50 dual clutch
14:52 transmission
14:53 Now dual clutch transmissions, you know what I think of them summer. Okay, summer not
14:58 Okay, this one's actually not terrible. The interesting thing is they've
15:03 Integrated a really decent stop start system as well. So it's quite seamless when it comes on and off
15:09 The only thing I did notice is when you start applying the throttle
15:12 Literally at half throttle now and it's not really doing anything you kind of have to
15:18 Really get on the throttle for it to wake up and start moving and I think that's just a transmission calibration
15:25 Because if I go down into sport mode and I do the same thing
15:29 It responds much quicker
15:33 So yeah, I think it is just a gearbox calibration
15:36 But I do find that a little bit frustrating and I just wish it could be a little sharper straight out of the box
15:40 It just doesn't make sense to have that much sort of
15:42 Throttle inactivity on the first half of travel. Volkswagen claims a combined economy of just over six litres per 100 Ks
15:51 We're currently sitting on 6.9 on the long-term average, which is pretty good
15:55 But you consider this as a family SUV that is getting really close there to hybrid economy
16:01 And if you are spending a fair bit of time on the highway
16:03 This is going to be the better option because it is a really efficient engine. It is worth keeping in mind
16:09 It does require AdBlue. So that will cost you
16:11 In the long run you're gonna have to pay for that every time it requires a top-up
16:15 But it's just worth keeping that in mind
16:19 The other thing worth noting as well is that this uses
16:22 4Motion and look in theory, it's an on-demand four-wheel-drive system because it's technically sending torque primarily to the front axle
16:31 It only engages the rear axle when it detects slip and those systems will always have some inherent lag in them
16:38 But this one is pretty snappy
16:41 I was doing a little bit of dynamic driving on our skid pad area and I could feel it shuffling torque to the rear as
16:47 required. I think that's a sign of a good system if it doesn't require full slip at the front before it does anything at the
16:52 Rear, that's when you know, it's actually active and working well
16:54 Okay, let's dial up speed to 130
17:00 This has adaptive damping and I'll talk about the ride in general in just a sec
17:04 But I'm curious to see what it's like on our sine waves. These of course are
17:09 Reflective of poor country roads in Australia and the speed you might hit when overtaking
17:16 Oh
17:17 That is fantastic that body control is excellent
17:20 We did test the Outlander here not that long ago and it had quite poor body control at the top end
17:25 This is so well refined
17:27 So yeah adaptive damping that means in and around town when it is in the comfort setting that it's in now
17:32 It is actually really nice and smooth and you get a lot of profile on those tires
17:36 Which means it just always feels nice and relaxed behind the wheel now speaking of drive modes
17:41 You have a number of off-road modes here. So you have snow
17:45 Normal off-road and then expert off-road where you can actually change a whole stack of settings
17:50 So if I go to expert off-road
17:51 You can change everything from stability control calibration through to how everything else feels behind the wheel while you're driving off-road
17:59 I did mention earlier. This was in our medium SUV off-road test and it did okay
18:03 So I guess these settings actually do something but then if you push the button in
18:07 It allows you to select your drive modes eco comfort normal sport individual
18:13 Let's go to sport puts the gearbox into the sport mode. The steering becomes heavier. The ride becomes firmer
18:19 See what it's like around our circuit here
18:22 It's fairly flat through the corners and despite this being a diesel it actually has a decent amount of pickup you can really
18:35 Lean into the throttle and it starts pushing you along nicely
18:39 Picking up speed nicely as well
18:43 It's
18:44 Actually surprising I wasn't expecting it to be this
18:47 Dynamic. I know the last time we drove here in a Tiguan
18:50 It was a Tiguan R and that put a whole stack of smiles on my face, but I didn't expect
18:55 Just a standard Tiguan especially here in all space trim to be as sort of fun and engaging as it is
19:02 I'm just curious to see what's gonna happen on the back straight here
19:09 This is surprising even on these tires that aren't really all that sort of sport focused
19:15 It's holding on really nicely and we'll just come out onto the back straight here and see how it goes
19:20 yeah, look it runs out of puff a little bit there, but
19:24 Actually pretty surprised at how well this handles. So yeah big tick there on the handling front
19:28 Okay, let's do a 0 to 100 run here so Volkswagen claims a time of just under 8 seconds
19:37 We're gonna do 0 to 100 but also up to 120 so we can see what our 80 to 120 overtaking time is like
19:43 Pop our GPS measurement device into the right mode
19:47 I'm gonna put this into sport mode and then in addition to that I'll put the stability control into ESC sport
19:54 So that is all active and then I'm going to use launch control
19:57 so you use launch control by holding your foot on the brake and then nailing the throttle beyond the kickdown switch and
20:03 Then it'll come up saying launch control active
20:07 Here it is there so it builds up some revs. We'll let go of the brake
20:10 Pins you in the seat nicely. It's pretty good. All right
20:14 Past 100
20:21 And there's 120
20:24 Pull her up. Okay, so 0 to 100 in 7.9 seconds and 80 to 120 in 6 seconds
20:32 That's actually not too bad. It shows you that it still has that punch available for overtaking
20:37 Which I guess is what you want
20:39 especially if you have a full complement of passengers you want to know that it can get up and move without sort of too many
20:43 dramas and
20:44 What about our reverse test? Let's give that a shot put that into reverse. Here we go straight down
20:52 Talk there but 30 k's an hour is as fast as it gets
21:00 Now what's visibility like so down the front there it's good I can see
21:04 Decent vision down the side with those wing mirrors blind spot monitors built into those
21:08 Visibility out the back is good as well
21:10 But keep in mind if you do have the third row up with the headrest deployed
21:13 It will be just a little bit tricky to see out of there
21:15 Now you're probably not gonna be doing any towing
21:17 But if you do want to it has a two and a half ton brake towing capacity
21:21 Which I think is pretty impressive for a seven seat SUV in this segment
21:25 Okay, let's test out our lane departure and our lane keeping systems plus another feature that I've seen on a bunch of other
21:33 Volkswagen vehicles that I thought we'd test out today. So I'm gonna get this up to
21:36 70 k's an hour
21:39 Speed up there. So 70 k's an hour is
21:42 Where we're at so you can see that the system is active because I've got the little lanes on display there if I go over
21:49 To the right it will then pull it back in a little bit there
21:52 It's actually doing a good job of centering the vehicle in the lane here
21:56 I am sort of still just holding the steering wheel a little bit there, but it's doing a good job in this first lane
22:02 We'll jump over to the banked lane
22:04 We'll see how that goes this often throws some of these systems out a little bit wait for that to go green there
22:10 It's green there. We'll see what happens as we drift towards that line
22:13 It's doing an okay job so what it's doing it pulses it back into the center and
22:21 Then kind of lets go when it's in the center. I don't think this is like a proper lane
22:24 Centering system. I think it's more just a lane departure
22:28 We'll see what happens if we go up to the top all it's actually doing a really good job there
22:32 So top lane of our bowl now, let's see what happens. This is the one that basically catches everyone out
22:38 It's now come up with an error. Yeah, okay. We've got a whole bunch of errors
22:44 Lane assist and stability control not available, so I don't know what happened there
22:49 There's like a whole bunch of warnings on my screen now
22:53 Tire pressure loss indicator whole thing is lit it up, okay?
22:59 I don't know what's going on. We're gonna pull over and we'll just have a little look outside the car
23:02 Wow, okay, everything has erred. I'm gonna try switching the car off and on
23:08 No, so we've tried locking unlocking
23:11 restarting
23:13 Nothing seems to have fixed it so for some reason moving to that third lane of the bowl has just
23:19 Made all these warnings come up
23:22 So yeah, it's a pass in lane one pass in lane two and a fail in lane three just by virtue of the car
23:27 Coming up with all of these error messages
23:30 The other thing I wanted to show you but obviously can't now because we've got all these error messages is the undertake
23:36 Protection which seems to be common on a lot of Volkswagen products
23:39 And it basically means that if you are driving in a lane with radar cruise control on if there's a vehicle to your right that
23:46 You're about to pass by undertaking. It'll prevent you from doing that until you tap the throttle and it accelerates away
23:52 So next time we get one of these in or if this decides to fix itself. We will get vision of that as well
23:58 Hello everyone sorry to interrupt your Tiguan viewing
24:02 I just wanted to give you a quick update on the error that came up on the Tiguan
24:06 After we shot the video I sent that information off to Volkswagen including the video and they've come back and said that there was a misreading
24:12 From the acceleration sensor which caused the system to take a cautious approach
24:16 By deploying warning lights seen in the drivers cluster when it was confirmed
24:20 There was no ongoing fault the system reset to normal status
24:23 And that's what happened later in the day the car was driving normally
24:26 So just wanted to give you a quick update on why all of those errors appeared
24:29 So Tiguan Allspace, I think despite the age of the platform
24:35 This is still a really good car and the thing with the Allspace is I think it's the most dynamic in the segment when it
24:41 Comes to seven-seaters the rest of them are just they become very compromised when they try and add seven seats whereas this
24:48 Meets the brief for seven seats
24:49 It's still quite sporty and engaging to drive in here in diesel trim uses barely any fuel at all
24:54 So if you do want a slightly sportier version there is a 162 TSI available
24:58 Unfortunately the full fat R version doesn't come in seven seats, but this is still really enjoyable to drive
25:04 So let me know in the comments section below. Have you bought a Tiguan Allspace?
25:08 What else did you look at when it came to shopping this and are you happy with all the features and tech that it has?
25:13 I'm keen for your feedback
