Hey guys! Welcome to a few days in the life of a first year dental student! I wanted to do this DS1 dental school vlog to show you a few days of what dental school is really like! I studied for a big biology/biochemistry exam and showed how I study in dental school, we took maxillary impressions in the clinic, I practiced my waxing, and showed you what I do to unwind and what I eat! 00:02 Hey guys, and welcome back to my channel.
00:23 And today I'm doing another dental school vlog.
00:25 My skin's not doing so hot today,
00:27 so we're just gonna ignore that.
00:28 But a lot of you guys liked my last vlog,
00:30 so I decided to make this kind of a regular thing,
00:33 like maybe once or twice a month.
00:34 I'm gonna vlog for a few days this time,
00:36 because I feel like it gives a better representation
00:38 of what my normal life is like.
00:40 Maybe eventually we'll do a week if we get crazy.
00:42 So today is Wednesday, we had a late start today,
00:45 which is 9 a.m. instead of 8 a.m.
00:47 So it's around eight right now,
00:49 so I should be leaving soon,
00:50 'cause I wanna get a little studying done before.
00:53 I was gonna do more studying,
00:54 but I've been so tired lately
00:55 that I just kinda needed a little bit of time to sleep in.
00:57 Right now we're studying for our
00:59 human structure and function exam on Friday,
01:01 which is basically, this one's on gene regulation,
01:04 transcription, and some biochemistry stuff.
01:07 So it's a lot of relearning,
01:09 but I think I kind of underestimated
01:10 how much detail it would be.
01:12 So I still have a lot to study for that.
01:14 We also had an exam yesterday in dental anatomy.
01:17 I think it went pretty well.
01:19 And then also today we have a lunch and learn.
01:22 Colgate is coming, and basically we're just gonna get
01:24 a bunch of free toothpaste and stuff.
01:26 And they're gonna talk to us about their toothpaste.
01:28 So lots of companies like to come to dental schools
01:30 and give out products in case we like them.
01:32 Maybe we will recommend them to our patients in the future,
01:35 and that's good business practice for them.
01:37 I don't really know, that's kind of my assumption.
01:39 But yeah, I've gotten so many free toothbrushes
01:42 and toothpaste at this point
01:43 that I could fill a closet with them.
01:45 Not really, but I will never have to buy toothpaste
01:47 in dental school.
01:48 So that is what's going on today.
01:51 I have already made my lunch the night before
01:53 because I don't like to spend time in the morning.
01:56 And I also made my breakfast the night before.
01:58 So, oh my gosh, she is going to jump in the fridge again.
02:01 Okay, well, we're just gonna let that happen for a second.
02:04 I don't know why she likes the fridge.
02:05 But this is what I have for lunch.
02:07 I have teriyaki chicken and some stir-fry veggies
02:11 with some rice.
02:12 And then for breakfast I have my pumpkin pie overnight oats.
02:16 I will probably already shared my what I eat in a day
02:19 with this, but I use the Level 1 protein.
02:23 It's long lasting, it stays with you all day.
02:26 Okay, Peach, time to get out of the fridge.
02:27 Time to get, yes, we're trying to get out of the fridge.
02:30 So I'm just gonna pack these up into my bag to eat.
02:35 I need two hands for this, to eat when I'm in class.
02:37 Gonna pack my iPad and my laptop.
02:42 And I'm also going to the gym after class today.
02:44 I don't know if I really have time for it
02:46 because I need to be studying for this exam.
02:47 I'm just gonna make it quick 'cause going to the gym
02:49 for 45 minutes is better than nothing.

02:58 So I just made myself my greens for the ride there.
03:09 So I've been switching to have my greens in the morning
03:11 instead of the afternoon because I just feel like
03:13 it just helps my digestion throughout the day better
03:16 and really just like prevents
03:17 like any bloating from happening.
03:19 So having that in the morning.

04:10 So I just got back from the gym.
04:22 I just worked out for like 45 minutes.
04:24 I just did like all compound movements.
04:26 I didn't get to film that much of it.
04:28 I have like an awkward view of a bench press.
04:31 So I may or may not put that in here.

04:42 So yeah, I never told you what classes I had today.
04:45 I had diagnosis and treatment planning.
04:47 Then I had human structure and function,
04:49 which is the exam I have on Friday
04:50 that I get to study for later.
04:52 And then I had lunch.
04:53 We had that Colgate presentation.
04:55 I got like two toothpaste and like two toothbrushes.
04:58 So we're never running out of toothpaste here.
05:01 And then I had development of oral tissues.
05:04 And then we had this like financial planning seminar.
05:07 Oh my God.
05:08 Hi.
05:09 What's wrong?
05:10 I didn't vlog that much during the day
05:11 because honestly on Wednesdays,
05:12 I just sit in class literally all day.
05:14 So I don't think that's entirely that fun to watch.
05:19 Okay, I thought it would be nice and pick you up,
05:22 but you're like being weird.
05:23 So yeah, Wednesdays are kind of like my least favorite days
05:25 because it's just straight class, like all day long.
05:28 Tomorrow we have clinic
05:29 and we're doing maxillary impressions.
05:30 This is your maxillary arch.
05:33 So yeah, that's what we're doing tomorrow for the afternoon.
05:36 So it's less class time.
05:37 So yeah, I'm just having a little protein shake right now
05:39 because I'm really hungry.
05:40 Daylight savings has really thrown me off.
05:42 It's not even six yet and it is pitch black outside.
05:44 Like, excuse me.
05:45 I'm honestly probably just gonna make like ground turkey
05:47 or something because I didn't take out any salmon
05:49 from the freezer.
05:50 So that's what we have to work with.
05:52 But I'm gonna take a shower,
05:53 open a little package for my mom.
05:55 And then honestly, I'm just gonna study all night.
05:56 So that's the plan.
05:57 I think there's about six lectures of content for this exam.
06:00 Each of them are about two hours.
06:02 So I did two yesterday
06:03 and I'm hoping to get three done tonight.
06:06 That's a little ambitious
06:07 considering it's already almost six.
06:09 It's definitely not gonna happen.
06:10 I'm not that fast, but we can hope.
06:12 I study kind of differently for every exam.
06:14 But for this exam, I'm kind of trying to just like
06:17 go over the information as many times as I can
06:19 because sometimes the slides just have little details
06:21 which you need to know,
06:23 but you wouldn't really think that you need to know them.
06:24 So just looking over it a bunch of times
06:26 helps me just be exposed to the terms
06:28 as many times as possible.
06:30 And that helps.
06:31 And I write down the hard concepts
06:33 that I need to think about more.
06:35 Once I can rationalize,
06:37 we have to basically relearn glycolysis and all that stuff.
06:39 So I need to figure that out.
06:41 But yeah.
06:42 My mom's so sweet.
06:43 She sent me a little package.
06:44 First of all, we have these dark chocolate covered caramels
06:47 from Trader Joe's.
06:48 Yeah, these are so good.
06:49 And she sent me the dark chocolate
06:51 Trader Joe's peanut butter cups,
06:53 which I've been craving so badly recently.
06:55 I love to have a little sweet thing after lunch.
06:56 So I'm gonna bring one or two of those for my lunches.

07:02 So I just made myself a super quick dinner.
07:12 I just kind of grilled up, or not grilled,
07:15 but you know, pan fried some ground turkey,
07:17 put some taco seasoning on it,
07:19 got some broccoli for some greens,
07:20 and then I have some rice just for my rice cooker.
07:23 And now it is time to study.
07:27 So it's 9.30 and I didn't even get through one PowerPoint.
07:32 So clearly today just wasn't my day.
07:35 This happened before the last exam that I had in this class.
07:38 I like could not study like the day before.
07:41 I don't know.
07:42 I just like kind of like got freaked out tonight
07:44 and just couldn't do it.
07:46 But it's okay.
07:47 We're gonna see how it goes tomorrow.
07:49 Just like, I just wanted to include this
07:50 because like sometimes things don't always go as planned
07:54 and it's okay.
07:55 Like not everything's perfect all the time.
07:58 And sometimes like you just get overwhelmed
08:00 'cause there's so much information.
08:02 But hopefully I have time to study tomorrow.
08:05 I mean, I know I do have time to study tomorrow,
08:07 but hopefully I have enough time to go through everything
08:08 and memorize everything.
08:10 Anyways, I'm gonna go to bed
08:11 and hopefully maybe wake up a little early and study.

08:17 It's Thursday.
08:17 I don't know why my nose is always red.
08:19 It's very dry here.
08:20 So yeah, it's Thursday.
08:21 I just packed up all my stuff into my bag.
08:24 Got my, this time I have like
08:25 the blueberry muffin protein oats.
08:26 This might be my favorite flavor.
08:28 Got some apples and I got my lunch down here.
08:32 And I still need to pack up my iPad,
08:34 but my little Apple pencil is charging.
08:36 I also made myself my greens and my tea.
08:41 Oh, I kind of need to make that tea still actually.
08:43 But yeah, I expected to get up early today
08:46 and then like maybe get some studying done in the morning,
08:48 but it was just not gonna be worth it for me to wake up
08:50 and like be really tired
08:51 'cause like I wasn't gonna study well, you know?
08:53 So I didn't do that.
08:54 So I'm just gonna head to class.
08:55 I have head and neck anatomy,
08:57 then microbiology and immunology.
09:00 And then I have general clinic in the afternoon,
09:02 but hopefully general clinic doesn't go very long
09:05 or I don't have to go at all
09:06 because I really need to study.
09:07 Also, a lot of you guys asked me about scrubs
09:09 or if I'm gonna do like a scrub review.
09:11 I don't know if I'm gonna do a formal scrub review,
09:13 but my favorite are the figs so far.
09:15 I wear the, these are like the cargo pants,
09:18 the Kade cargo pants.
09:19 This is the one pocket scrub top.
09:21 And I have other scrubs, like have the Grey's Anatomy ones,
09:25 but I just don't really like how they fit.
09:26 And I like that you can tuck in the figs ones
09:29 and it gives you like a little bit of shape.
09:31 I don't know.
09:31 No scrubs are super flattering
09:33 and I can't fit into any skinny leg scrubs
09:35 because my calves are too thick.
09:37 So what can you do?
09:38 So I like the figs.

09:45 - Yeah, that's good actually.
09:54 - I took off all the excess.

10:01 - So I just got home.
10:21 Clinic actually didn't take very long.
10:23 It was only there from about one to like 1.45.
10:27 And then, so I can't like film in clinic
10:28 because like there's patients around.
10:30 So like that's not allowed.
10:33 But we just did maxillary impressions on each other
10:36 and it only took me two tries,
10:37 which is pretty good for the first time.
10:40 And then we went to go pour up the stone,
10:43 which I showed a little bit of that.
10:45 But then I took my stone out of the mold of the impression,
10:50 but the teeth were like, they looked like broken off.
10:53 I don't know what the issue was,
10:54 but basically I have to redo it next week.
10:56 But that's okay, honestly, more practice is good.
10:59 I'm gonna like actually have to do this on patients
11:01 at some point.
11:02 So might as well know how to do it.
11:04 So not too big of a deal.
11:05 But yeah, then afterwards,
11:07 we just went to a classroom to study for like two hours,
11:10 maybe a little more.
11:11 Sometimes it's just nice to get a little studying
11:13 done at school, so you don't have to do so much at home.
11:15 And now I have like one and a half PowerPoints left
11:19 to go over and then I have to review them all again.
11:22 But second time it's much faster.
11:24 Okay, so I'm gonna get through it all people.
11:27 It's gonna be good.
11:27 But anyway, I'm kind of tired.
11:29 So I might have a little like a moderate amount of caffeine,
11:32 like just some tea or something just to keep me going.
11:35 'Cause I might have to stay up a little later than usual.
11:38 And yeah, so literally my plan for tonight
11:40 is just probably eat dinner soon.
11:41 'Cause I'm a little hungry
11:42 and then study the rest of the night.
11:44 This is the life of a dental student people,
11:46 like you just study all the time.
11:47 Undergrad you have like maybe like four classes
11:50 to study for all the time.
11:52 I have 12, so yeah, it's a lot,
11:54 but I am getting there people.
11:55 We only have a few more exams till Thanksgiving
11:58 and Peach is encouraging me.
12:01 So I'm gonna have some dinner, a little beverage
12:05 and then study for the rest of the night.

13:04 But I made it through all the slides finally.
13:07 I was going to make it through them twice,
13:09 but I think I need to go to bed
13:11 and I'm gonna try to make it through them
13:13 maybe in the morning.
13:15 I really need to go through them twice though,
13:16 like I'm not gonna know everything
13:18 unless I go through twice.
13:19 I took so many little notes,
13:22 like look at all these guys.
13:24 By the way, highly recommend getting an iPad
13:27 if you're in like dental school, medical school.
13:30 It's just like honestly the best tool that I've used.
13:33 It makes it so easy to take notes
13:34 during class and everything.
13:36 So yeah, I'm gonna get ready for bed.
13:37 I probably won't vlog in the morning
13:39 'cause I'll be pretty rushed and kind of stressed.
13:41 So I will probably talk to you after class tomorrow.

14:47 and then I had two classes in the morning.
14:49 I had infection control and our like Axiom,
14:52 which is our like patient data server kind of thing class.
14:57 And then we had the exam and it took me literally forever.
15:01 I like was there to the last five minutes,
15:03 but I did really well.
15:05 I did like way above the average.
15:07 So I'm very happy.
15:08 I like literally wasn't expecting that
15:10 because I did not know most of the information honestly,
15:13 until this morning.
15:14 So we pulled it out though.
15:17 We did well.
15:18 Yes.
15:19 And then we went to one of my professor's offices
15:22 and he had like little treats for us for after our exam.
15:25 'Cause he's the best.
15:26 Then I went and did a little waxing.
15:29 We have a practical on Tuesday.
15:31 So I wanted to get a little practice in.
15:33 I'll probably have to go again at some point this weekend
15:36 to do another one.
15:36 But doing pretty good.
15:38 He said I would get like an 85, 90 on that.
15:40 So if I do another one,
15:41 I'm sure that I'll do better than that.
15:42 Yeah.
15:43 And then I went to the gym, did a little push day.
15:46 I like, don't know if I should have worked out
15:48 because I'm running on so little sleep,
15:49 but I'm honestly not like too tired.
15:52 Then I ended up going to Trader Joe's
15:53 'cause my boyfriend's coming tonight
15:55 and he wanted me to get him some coffee.
15:56 I don't drink coffee.
15:57 So I had to get him some.
15:59 He wanted Trader Joe's.
16:00 So I kind of went crazy.
16:02 I like literally wasn't gonna get anything.
16:04 And then I don't know why I was feeling beef jerky,
16:07 but like I was.
16:08 So I got that.
16:09 I got their little fake Pop-Tart things.
16:11 Candy cane JoJo's people.
16:13 It is the holiday season.
16:15 These are the best part of winter.
16:17 That's all I'm gonna say.
16:18 I'm obsessed.
16:19 Got some raviolis, pollo asada, some marinated chicken.
16:24 This is a coffee, some grapes.
16:26 Got some broccoli.
16:27 Usually I just get a head of broccoli,
16:28 but I don't think they have that.
16:30 I thought this was the sugar-free mango,
16:33 but it has sugar on top.
16:34 So I'm a little upset.
16:35 I don't know if I'll even eat it.
16:37 Cauliflower gnocchi, root vegetable fries.
16:40 I'm gonna pop those in my air fryer.
16:43 And then I got a few frozen things.
16:44 Chili lime chicken burgers.
16:46 Got a chicken burrito bowl.
16:47 This was really good last time I had it.
16:49 And then Cuban bowl.
16:50 And then we got some turkey corn dogs
16:52 because I have a weakness for corn dogs.
16:54 So yeah, it's about five o'clock right now.
16:57 I'm probably gonna make dinner like soon-ish
16:59 or maybe have some of the new snacks I got.
17:01 And then I'm just gonna relax tonight.
17:04 I'm probably gonna watch "Legally Blonde"
17:05 aka female empowerment in one movie.
17:08 We love her.
17:09 So I'm gonna watch that
17:10 and do some emails at the same time
17:12 and just relax, maybe paint my nails.
