Cal offensive coordinator expect better things in Year Two
Transcript
00:00 Yeah, at the expense of sounding immodest, I guess, the offense has been more productive.
00:08 Why do you think that's true this season and who deserves the credit?
00:13 I think everybody deserves the credit.
00:15 You know, it's a team game and I think we've done a really good job throughout the course
00:19 of the year.
00:20 You know, we've had some unfortunate injuries.
00:21 We've had a lot of moving parts with different positions.
00:24 And I think we've always put our guys in the best situation to have success.
00:30 You look at all the injuries at running back, but you still have a healthy Jadon.
00:33 I've played three quarterbacks.
00:34 We've had a couple injuries up front that we moved the guys around.
00:38 Our receiver position has had injuries through fall camp and we're moving those guys around.
00:42 And we've played games with 12 personnel.
00:44 We played games in 11 personnel.
00:46 We've been on a lot of spread games.
00:48 We've done a lot of heavyset games.
00:49 And I think it's just kind of us as a staff getting together and our players buying into
00:54 the success that we've had.
00:56 And every week is kind of a new adventure on what type of game plan we're going to have,
00:59 you know, on the challenge that we face.
01:01 And I think we're good at understanding our deficiencies and understanding what we're
01:06 good at.
01:07 And we try to do, you know, eliminate a lot of the stuff that, you know, is ran throughout
01:11 the week or just throughout the season and just really kind of focus it in on what we're
01:14 good at.
01:15 And I think we've done a really good job of mixing up the presentations.
01:20 And I think these guys are just starting to have a really good understand of how our offense
01:25 works.
01:26 My experience in the past is, you know, year one is always kind of an up and down deal.
01:30 And you're trying to move and shake as best you can.
01:32 You're figuring out your personnel and they're figuring out the coaches.
01:36 And when you kind of get halfway through the season, you continuously get better.
01:39 And then when you get into year two, year two even takes off even more because they're
01:42 so comfortable with what we're coaching and what we're doing.
01:46 But I think the credit goes to everybody because, you know, I think everybody's had their moments
01:51 as a player.
01:52 And I think as a coaching staff, we've done a really good job at just trying to change
01:56 up the varieties of what we do.
02:00 To what extent does the improved offensive line play a part?
02:04 Yeah, I think the line is playing at a high level, you know, like again, like we don't
02:09 ask them to do a lot, you know, and like, and Coach Blesch does a great job at getting
02:12 them to play hard and, and, and they have a really good understanding of what needs
02:17 to be accomplished.
02:18 They rep it, they get really confident in it.
02:20 And, and we try to keep them, you know, out of like certain scenarios.
02:24 And I have been I've been enjoying just watching those guys grow as a unit and the confidence
02:30 that they have.
02:31 And it's just they're a funny group, man, you know, like, when Driscoll scored the touchdown
02:35 versus Washington State, I thought we're going to get a celebration penalty because the entire
02:39 O-line round ran out on the field, you know.
02:41 And I just thought it was, you know, it's just fun watching that group grow and, and,
02:46 and then continuously get better.
02:48 And I think the O-line is playing at a high level.
02:50 I think Coach, you know, Burl Toler is doing a great job with those receivers.
02:53 Coach Plow is doing a great job with the tight ends, you know, I think it's just a good mix.
02:57 And then obviously, AT has had the biggest challenge at running back, you know, with
03:01 all the moving parts there.
03:02 But, you know, we just show up and we get to work and, and I think everybody is just
03:07 improving on a daily basis.
