Steve Clifford Talks Loss to Bucks
Transcript
00:00 second quarters where things started to slip away and then looking at the end,
00:03 the three point shooting was obviously the biggest difference.
00:05 Is there anything that kind of stood out?
00:07 >> No, I mean, yeah, just feel like we're like most every team.
00:11 We're gonna be better when our offensive possession is when the ball hits the paint.
00:16 We had a great first quarter where the ball moved and went side to side, but
00:21 we were inside out.
00:22 We created a lot of good shots for people.
00:25 And then as it happens sometimes when the ball's going in the basket,
00:29 we just stopped doing it.
00:31 I think we had, I took a time out, I told him I think we went seven possessions.
00:36 Where not once did the ball pass more than once and
00:39 I don't think it hit the paint other than we had a play where we tried to
00:44 score over Lopez, which is not gonna be a wise decision.
00:49 So I think we went from like, I wanna say 11 up to four down and
00:56 like seven possessions because we weren't taking good shots and
01:00 then they were running down the other way and scoring.
01:02 So you gotta know what's working and you gotta stay with it.
01:07 And that's what we didn't do.
01:09 >> Just had a quick follow up, just kind of on the rotation side,
01:12 I know Brandon got some early foul trouble, Nick got hit and had to leave.
01:15 Was that kind of by design going that deep into the rotation stack or is that?
01:19 >> No, no, no, that was just foul trouble and injuries.
01:22 >> Just what's your thoughts on what you guys, Captain Moss.
01:28 >> I thought he did great.
01:29 I mean, he brought a lot of energy to the floor.
01:31 He, I mean, obviously he scored, he rebounded.
01:41 I mean, he played really, really well.
01:43 It's not easy to do, having not played for that long of a time.
01:48 He was ready and also really poised and into the game plan.
01:54 I mean, I thought he did a great job.
01:56 >> Then you mentioned trying to, I guess, get the ball,
01:59 I guess a little bit more of a paint, try to just be a little more inside out.
02:04 How do you drill the guys to make sure you do that a little bit more and-
02:08 >> Well, right now in the NBA going into
02:10 this game, we're first.
02:12 No team gets to paint more than we do.
02:14 No one.
02:15 First and paint to the point.
02:16 I believe, I know we're first in paint to the point, points in the paint.
02:20 And I believe we're first in the ball hitting the paint.
02:23 Now our problem is when the ball doesn't hit the paint,
02:27 we don't have one on one guys.
02:30 So we're really, really bad.
02:32 And that's what happened tonight.
02:33 Again, when the ball stopped moving and stopped going so we were inside out,
02:38 that's when we stopped scoring.
02:40 But I mean, we do spend a lot of time on that, obviously.
02:43 I don't think there's any bigger part of offensive basketball than penetration.
02:48 If you look at the numbers every year, it bears that out.
02:51 With a team like ours where we have enough talent, but
02:55 that you've got to be inside out with a roster like ours, you have to.
02:58 And that cost us tonight.
03:00 >> Steve, yesterday you mentioned that you were gonna wait till today to figure out
03:05 how much you would play miles, 33 minutes I think is what he got tonight.
03:08 So is that kind of a little surprising to you that he was able to go that long and
03:14 play as well as he did tonight?
03:15 >> Yeah, it's impressive for sure.
03:18 I mean, I didn't mean to play him that much.
03:19 We got obviously with a neck injury, we got messed up and
03:23 then Brandon's foul troll.
03:25 I was gonna try because of back to back to keep him around 28.
03:30 But you look good and excuse me, he didn't seem to be overly fatigued.
03:38 So we'll see how he feels tomorrow.
03:41 >> And then with him, is there any certain rotations or
03:44 any guys that you want him to be on the floor with in these first few games to get
03:47 him integrated or is there?
03:49 >> Well, I think we just got, I mean, obviously that's all gotta be worked out.
03:54 You know what I mean?
03:54 So that how you sub is everything.
04:00 Finding the right people to be on the floor with the other right people is
04:04 what you start the season is almost what you spend all your time on.
04:07 So I think he plays in a manner where he's easy to play with.
04:12 Plus, when you make out lineups, because he plays at both ends of the floor,
04:19 you're not covering for him or make sure you don't have another poor defender out
04:24 there or anything like that.
04:25 So he actually makes decisions like that pretty easy.
04:30 >> And then with Nick, obviously concussion, I mean,
04:33 it just wasn't like kind of seeing enough to deal with that right now.
04:36 It was just, you figure out guys that little spill he took there to kind of get
04:40 that little concussion.
04:41 >> Yeah, I mean, I just saw him going down.
04:43 You can tell, you can get up, I can tell he got hit hard.
04:46 And hopefully, he came back into play and
04:53 thought he was okay in the halftime.
04:56 He didn't feel good.
04:57 So hopefully, we'll get good news tomorrow.
05:01 >> Coach, you mentioned about Miles playing defense.
05:03 He also guarded Giannis for a good period of time.
05:05 Can you talk about how he helps you not only offensively, but defensively too?
05:11 >> For sure, I mean, listen, he brings energy.
05:14 He's very positive with his teammates on the floor.
05:17 He's got toughness.
05:19 He's a very good competitor.
05:21 And those are all intangible type things that you need,
05:23 as many guys like that as possible.
05:25 So I don't think there's a phase of the game where he doesn't help the team.
05:29 >> Thanks, everyone.
05:31 >> Appreciate it.
05:32 >> Thanks.
