00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're giving you 10 things you ought to know before picking
00:08 up Tekken 8.
00:10 Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:15 the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:19 The story so far.
00:28 The story of Tekken has been the same old song and dance for almost 30 years.
00:32 Heihachi fights his son Kazuya because he's a demon, Kazuya fights his son Jin because
00:37 he's an angsty half-demon, and everyone takes turns throwing each other into pits,
00:42 volcanoes, and launching someone into space.
00:45 Well no more, Tekken 8 is aiming to conclude the story between Kazuya and Jin.
00:51 And what of Grandpappy Heihachi?
00:54 Only you should ask.
01:07 In case you skipped out or forgot about the story mode of Tekken 7, yes, Heihachi Mishima
01:14 is finally dead.
01:17 D.E.D.
01:18 Dead.
01:19 Kazuya finally killed his own father, Heihachi will not be appearing in Tekken 8, which is
01:25 kind of crazy to think about.
01:27 The head of Mishima Zaibatsu and the founder of the King of Iron Fist tournament has long
01:32 been the series' main villain and has appeared in just about every game in the franchise.
01:37 But now, it's just Kazuya.
01:40 Does this mean we're never going to get gaming's best grandpa ever again, at least
01:44 not until the eventual reboot, remake, refist, whatever they're going to call it?
01:48 Does this mean Jin or Kazuya are going to be the face of the franchise from this point
01:52 forward?
01:53 So many questions, and so many cloudy answers.
02:03 Who are you fools?
02:10 While we aren't seeing Heihachi anymore, Tekken 8 is bringing a lot of familiar faces.
02:15 In fact, it's almost entirely familiar faces.
02:19 First you do have the series' mainstays, you know, King, Asuka, Lars, Brian, Xiaoyu,
02:25 Marshall, Paul, Nina, Lily, Jack, and Yoshimitsu.
02:29 Then you have a couple of returning characters who are not in Tekken 7, like Jun Kazama,
02:34 Raven, and Dragunov.
02:36 Plus you have Leroy returning from Tekken 7's post-launch support.
02:40 Are there any new characters at all?
02:42 Well, there is Azusena, a Peruvian MMA fighter and coffee enthusiast, but that's pretty
02:49 much it at the time of this video.
02:51 The base game will come with a whopping 32 fighters, which is smaller than T7's starting
02:56 roster, but still a sizable start.
02:59 Even if some favorites don't make it into the base game, there's years of support
03:03 to look forward to.
03:04 So don't be distraught.
03:10 Start up the Heat!
03:18 The biggest difference between Tekken 8 and its predecessor is the new Heat mechanic.
03:23 While T7 did evolve the Rage mechanic we had seen since T6, series producer Katsuhiro Harada
03:29 and his team have noticed how defensive many players are.
03:33 For Tekken 8, Heat replaces Rage and is meant to encourage more aggressive gameplay.
03:38 Not only that, it also grants more moves to your character, potentially leading to more
03:43 devastating combos.
03:45 So if you're used to footsies and turtling, that ain't gonna save you this time.
03:57 Come at me like your life depends on it.
04:06 Chip damage is also getting a rework in Tekken 8.
04:09 As with most fighting games, blocking while your rival is attacking will only chip your
04:13 health away by a fraction of a fraction.
04:16 Sometimes a fraction of a fraction of a fraction.
04:18 However, T8 is making it so countering is rewarding.
04:22 This time, if you can punish and string attacks quick enough, you can recover whatever health
04:27 you lost to chip damage.
04:28 Sure, it may not seem like much, but it really could save your butt later on.
04:38 Get your cameras ready, folks.
04:46 Another aspect of Tekken 8 that's a bit more friendly to spectators is the focus on
04:51 presentation.
04:52 When it comes to watching competitive fighting games, it can sometimes be hard to follow
04:55 the action, or things get stale when people are using the same strategies over and over
05:01 again.
05:02 For T8, Bandai Namco is looking at ways to make fights more interesting, no matter how
05:07 often you watch tournaments.
05:09 This means they are looking at ways stages can be destructible, and how characters react
05:13 to specific moves, both of which can possibly open up to brand new strategies.
05:22 I hope your affairs are in order.
05:32 And the affairs are in order.
05:34 Bandai Namco is going about T8's development a bit differently.
05:38 For nearly all of T7's development, both pre- and post-launch, Bandai Namco handled
05:43 everything themselves until the very end when they handed it off to Erika.
05:47 Erika has shown the quality of their work with online play across a variety of titles,
05:52 such as Tetris 99, Fighting EX Lair, and Chocobo GP.
05:57 For T8, Bandai Namco is developing the base game, while Erika handles online and post-launch
06:03 support.
06:07 Get ready for the next battle!
06:15 Online is also getting a rework for Tekken 8.
06:17 In the past, Tekken has kept things simple, almost too simple.
06:22 Like, we're talking simple as in, just a menu and maybe a training ground to beat on
06:26 a dummy while you wait for a match simple.
06:29 T8 is expanding to reach the same level as other fighting games, though.
06:33 You'll now get a customizable avatar to run around as in Arcade Quest, which will
06:38 teach you all about the game's mechanics and online functionality.
06:42 Of course, you'll still earn fight money to purchase more customization options for
06:45 your characters.
06:54 Power is everything!
07:01 Perhaps the biggest draw for T8's tech geek fans is the engine it's being developed
07:05 on.
07:06 Though we are a few years into the ninth generation of consoles, we haven't seen too many games
07:11 utilizing the new Unreal Engine 5.
07:14 Most companies have found their own proprietary engine by this point, or have opted for other
07:19 engines.
07:20 Tekken 8 will be the first major fighting game to utilize Unreal Engine 5, and damn
07:25 it looks unbelievably sexy.
07:27 You can tell the development team is taking full advantage of the engine's capabilities
07:31 in visual fidelity and performance.
07:34 We only hope it's as polished as it looks when it's finally out.
07:37 Which by the way…
07:44 Launch!
07:49 So Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have already jumped into the next generation of gaming,
07:54 but when will Tekken 8?
07:56 Tekken 8 is thankfully not far away.
07:59 The game will launch on January 26, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series XS, and PC.
08:06 Considering the game will be available super early in the year, expect to see it pop up
08:11 at various tournaments such as EVO Japan in April 2024, as well as the main EVO event
08:16 in July 2024.
08:18 In other words, the king of Iron Fist Tournament is about to take over the year.
08:29 Who are you going to main when Tekken 8 launches?
08:32 Is there a character you're hoping to see return?
