00:00 Now you want to pull a...
00:02 What do you call it?
00:04 A time heist?
00:06 Welcome to WatchMojo,
00:08 and today we're counting down our picks for the most effective choices made by cinematic characters.
00:12 [Screaming]
00:14 [Explosion]
00:16 This list excludes
00:18 villains and/or anyone else from animated movies.
00:20 Also, more than a few spoilers.
00:22 Number 20.
00:24 Booby-trapping the house, Home Alone.
00:26 Kevin McAllister might be a kid,
00:28 but he's no slouch when it comes to intelligence.
00:30 This is my house. I have to defend it.
00:34 His ability to thwart two robbers in Home Alone
00:36 ranks among the smartest things any child has ever done on film.
00:39 Using some inventive ideas,
00:41 the young hero gathers together all of his toys and household supplies to defend himself.
00:45 Be a good little fella now and open the door.
00:48 [Gunshot]
00:49 [Screaming]
00:51 Every entrance has been thoroughly rigged in order to slow down Harry and Marv.
00:54 Injuring the criminals at every turn,
00:56 these traps give McAllister enough time to escape the house.
00:59 You guys give up or you're thirsty for more?
01:01 It's amazing that the Burglars survived the onslaught at all,
01:04 but we're pretty sure they're walking away with a few concussions.
01:07 Now all your troubles will be out of sight.
01:13 [Screaming]
01:15 Number 19.
01:16 Trapping Dormammu, Doctor Strange.
01:18 By the end of Doctor Strange,
01:20 the powerful Dormammu thinks he has the hero in the palm of his hand.
01:23 Dormammu, I've come to bargain.
01:26 You've come to die.
01:29 Strange uses some of his own trickery to put them in a time loop.
01:32 Stuck together inside an infinite bubble,
01:34 the evil entity seems to kill his adversary over and over.
01:37 He realizes too late that he's under the control of the Time Lord and can't escape.
01:41 What is this? Illusion?
01:45 No, this is real.
01:46 The talented Doctor takes this as an opportunity to open up new negotiations,
01:50 but this time, his enemy has no choice but to accept them.
01:53 It's a clever bit of time manipulation that showcases the brains and abilities of an underestimated superhero.
01:59 Never come back.
02:01 Do it, and I'll break the loop.
02:04 Number 18.
02:05 Capturing the bus for a rerun, Speed.
02:08 With a bus rigged to blow, LAPD officer Jack Traven needs to keep the vehicle above 50 mph or it'll explode.
02:14 He realizes the whole thing is being watched by the villain, Howard Payne.
02:18 He can see you.
02:20 Just keep looking straight ahead.
02:22 In order to buy themselves some privacy, Traven and company figure out a way to have the security feed loop itself.
02:27 I want you to make a tape and loop it so that it runs over and over, okay?
02:30 This makes it all look like business as usual on the inside.
02:33 In reality, the police are helping to offload the hostages.
02:36 The multi-part plan goes off without a hitch until Payne's keen eye finally discovers the ruse.
02:41 Through this tightly coordinated operation, the authorities are one step ahead of the antagonist.
02:46 [Music]
02:53 Number 17.
02:54 Scientific method, The Thing.
02:56 Tie everybody down real tight.
02:58 What for?
02:59 For your health.
03:00 A mysterious organism descends upon an Antarctic research base, turning the staff against each other.
03:05 Kurt Russell's R.J. McCready takes control and ties up several suspects that could be infected.
03:10 Planning to test a sample of everyone's blood, the character manages to figure out the culprit in a methodical way.
03:15 McCready uses his flamethrower after the creature starts to take over its host.
03:19 We'll do you last.
03:21 [Screaming]
03:24 Not every horror hero is this intelligent, making this one from The Thing especially noteworthy for his use of the scientific method.
03:30 You could argue that it doesn't solve all their problems, but this test does speed up the process of finding the deadly life form.
03:36 [Explosion]
03:40 Number 16.
03:41 Jack Sparrow steals an Aztec coin before fighting Barbossa.
03:45 Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl.
03:47 Hoping to lift the curse of the Aztec gold, Captain Barbossa fights for his own mortality against an assorted cast of characters.
03:54 Captain Jack Sparrow thwarts these plans by sneaking away a coin for himself.
03:57 Showing off his skills as a thief, the character makes himself immortal and able to trade swords with the demonic Barbossa.
04:03 [Clock ticking]
04:05 Couldn't resist, mate.
04:07 Sparrow's invincibility also distracts the evil pirate long enough for Will Turner to break the curse.
04:12 This strategy saves the day and reminds everyone that Johnny Depp's anti-hero is reliable after all.
04:18 Number 15.
04:19 Lying about Fran's death, Knives Out.
04:22 Investigating the death of Harlan Thrombey, Detective Benoit Blanc tries to rule out possible suspects, such as nurse Marta Cabrera.
04:29 The latter character reveals that she can't tell a lie without vomiting.
04:32 Dear girl, I'm sorry. I assumed you were speaking figuratively.
04:35 While this might seem like a gross detail, it actually comes in handy at the end.
04:39 Chris Evans' ransom becomes the prime suspect and a phone call becomes the perfect opportunity for Cabrera to act.
04:45 She pretends that key witness Fran has survived, leading Evans' grandson to confess everything.
04:50 She's okay. She's ready to talk.
04:52 He then gets covered in puke, revealing that Ana de Armas' character is lying.
04:57 The ploy proves itself to be ingenious and somewhat disgusting, prompting the real killer to expose his true self.
05:03 No!
05:05 Number 14.
05:06 Setting up three layers of dreams, Inception.
05:09 In Christopher Nolan's trippy thriller, Dom Cobb and his associates must invade a man's dreams in order to plant an idea.
05:15 I specialize in a very specific type of security.
05:20 Subconscious security.
05:22 This involves multiple dream levels in order to do it properly.
05:25 Cobb's complex scheme involves taking Robert Fisher deeper into his subconscious until he's face to face with a version of his own father.
05:31 I know you were disappointed.
05:34 I couldn't be you.
05:36 No.
05:38 No, no, no.
05:40 I was disappointed.
05:44 I just tried.
05:45 The touching scene is all a ruse that changes Fisher's mind and makes the cerebral heist complete.
05:50 Some people find Inception too difficult to understand, but those who stick with it will find this idea to be amongst the smartest of its kind.
05:57 You know, the will means that dad wanted me to be my own man.
06:02 Not just to live for him.
06:03 Number 13.
06:04 Using the cargo loader to fight the alien queen, Aliens.
06:07 After surviving the first film, Ellen Ripley finds herself up against another xenomorph.
06:12 The hero confronts the alien queen in the climax of Aliens.
06:15 Rather than fighting it with traditional weapons, the protagonist hops in a cargo loader.
06:19 Get away from her, you bitch!
06:22 This enables Ripley to match the creature's physical strength and size.
06:25 It also keeps her at arm's length from the monster, avoiding its mouth and other appendages.
06:29 The resulting battle allows the heroic character to toss the pesky enemy into an airlock.
06:34 [Screaming]
06:37 Unfortunately, the characters in the next several sequels didn't take this same strategy to heart.
06:42 [Screaming]
06:47 Number 12.
06:48 Heading back to the Citadel, Mad Max Fury Road.
06:51 Spending the first half of the movie escaping, Furiosa and Max reach a crossroads with a difficult decision to make.
06:57 I suggest we go back the same way we came.
06:59 Through the canyon.
07:02 They're far from home and in desperate need of help.
07:05 Instead of trekking deeper into the barren desert, the group decides to return to the Citadel.
07:09 Sometimes going back to the safest place in the wasteland can be the best option.
07:13 They're heading for the canyon.
07:15 They're going back to the Citadel.
07:19 Taking the caravan back, the heroes fight their way to the oasis that's now unguarded.
07:24 It's a tough journey that takes its toll on the characters, but ultimately, they can come back to a place that's full of much-needed supplies.
07:30 Number 11.
07:32 Picking cotton out of the chair.
07:33 Get out.
07:34 Following an elaborate scheme, Chris finds himself tied up in the basement of his girlfriend's family home.
07:39 His sick and twisted host put him in a chair while he awaits surgery.
07:47 Without anyone knowing, the hero rips cotton out of the seat cushions and stuffs it into his ears.
07:52 It's both a subtle and low-tech way to gain the upper hand.
07:55 This allows him to avoid the mind control that the creepy organization tries to use on him.
07:59 Pretending to be brainwashed, the protagonist waits for Jeremy to return and hits him over the head when he isn't looking.
08:05 Jordan Peele's great writing makes this smart choice feel even more impactful with its rich symbolism.
08:16 Number 10.
08:17 Closing their eyes when the Ark is opened.
08:19 Raiders of the Lost Ark.
08:20 Falling into the hands of the Nazis, the Ark of the Covenant seems to be just outside of Indiana Jones' reach once again.
08:26 However, the villains are nice enough to keep him around for the grand opening.
08:30 Before it all happens, the archaeologist reminds Marion to shut her eyes.
08:33 Don't look at it.
08:34 Shut your eyes, Marion.
08:36 Don't look at it, no matter what happens.
08:37 She takes this advice to heart while the baddies start to drop like flies.
08:41 There are also a few nightmare-inducing moments, with the likes of Tote and Belok getting the worst of it.
08:45 Don't look, Marion.
08:46 Keep your eyes shut.
08:47 It appears that Jones' advice isn't superstition after all, given the gruesome aftermath.
08:52 Considering the artifact's true power, it's probably best that it ends up locked away in storage.
08:56 Number 9.
08:58 Taping the gun to his back.
08:59 Die Hard.
09:00 John McClane might just be having the worst Christmas Eve ever in this action movie classic.
09:05 Jesus.
09:06 Hi, honey.
09:08 This doesn't distract him from coming up with a few smart ideas, the latter of which includes one that saves his and his wife's life.
09:14 Hans Gruber looks like he has it all figured out and McClane unarmed, but there's a hidden sidearm taped to his enemy's back.
09:20 The detective's quick-draw skills come in handy as he gives Gruber one last surprise.
09:24 Lucky for this hero, he has enough brains to match his physical skills.
09:28 This all leads to a final confrontation that spells the end for the villain's plans.
09:32 Happy trails, Hans.
09:33 Number 8.
09:35 Using the Infinity Stones against Thanos.
09:37 Avengers Endgame.
09:38 By the end of Avengers Infinity War, the remaining heroes are left hopeless after Thanos snaps their friends away.
09:43 You should have gone for the head.
09:46 The sequel finds the survivors in need of a plan.
09:51 They eventually settle on a complex operation involving time travel, hoping to harness all of the Infinity Stones for themselves.
09:58 I have no idea what we're talking about time travel here.
10:01 Either it's all a joke or none of it is.
10:03 We're good.
10:04 This all leads them to a climactic battle with the imposing villain.
10:07 With a little help from almost everyone, the Avengers are able to exact their revenge on their nemesis.
10:12 Tony Stark puts all the stones back together and snaps the purple guy out of existence.
10:17 It might have taken an intergalactic army and a few sacrifices, but it was well worth it.
10:33 Number 7.
10:34 Using deadly diseases as camouflage.
10:36 World War Z.
10:38 In the last section of the zombie film, UN investigator Jerry Lane survives a plane crash and makes his way to an important research facility.
10:45 But even if you're right, I mean, infecting the populace with a lethal illness is not exactly a cure.
10:50 It's not a cure.
10:51 It's camouflage.
10:52 He eventually convinces the other survivors to help him fight his way to a room containing pathogens.
10:57 Injecting yourself with one might make the zombies avoid you, or maybe it'll all be for nothing.
11:01 Lane finally injects himself and tests out the theory on a nearby walker.
11:05 Thankfully for him, the undead don't go after anyone who's considered unfit for consumption.
11:10 The hero then walks freely down the hallway as a horde runs right by him.
11:14 Avoiding the usual genre cliches, this movie finds a new and successful way to avoid getting bitten.
11:19 Number 6.
11:20 Perseus uses Medusa's head to defeat the Kraken.
11:23 Clash of the Titans.
11:24 Whether you're talking about the original film or the remake, Clash of the Titans features Perseus's journey to defeat the Kraken.
11:31 The story involves having to defeat Medusa in order to harness her head's special power.
11:35 Once the hero obtains the deadly face, he confronts the monster in a thrilling climax.
11:39 His plan works perfectly as he uses the head to turn the creature to stone.
11:51 Rather than having to use a sword or even a massive army, the protagonist takes down Hades' not-so-secret weapon in an impressive takedown.
11:58 This mythical adventure wouldn't be complete without this stroke of godlike genius.
12:07 Number 5.
12:15 Building an Iron Man suit to escape captivity.
12:18 Iron Man.
12:19 After getting ambushed and captured by the Ten Rings Group, Tony Stark doesn't know if he'll survive in Afghanistan.
12:24 He's then given access to vital materials in order to make a missile for the enemy.
12:28 Choosing to build a suit of armor instead, Stark creates his own escape plan.
12:35 The giant suit may be rudimentary, but it's definitely effective against armed guards.
12:48 It also serves as a prototype for the iconic red suit.
12:51 Most importantly, Stark uses the technology to get out of there with his life.
12:55 The entire sequence reveals the character's physical and mental prowess under pressure.
12:59 Number 4.
13:05 Dany stopping his snow footprint trail.
13:07 The Shining.
13:08 Imagine being trapped in a remote hotel with Jack Nicholson chasing you around a maze.
13:12 If your name is Dany Torrance, you need to think fast in order to avoid your axe-wielding father.
13:19 Luckily, the sun is wise beyond his years and decides to backtrack through his own footprints.
13:24 This creates the effect that his trail has stopped.
13:26 While Jack keeps wandering aimlessly, his smarter child hides and makes his way back to safety.
13:31 It's the kind of choice that even adults wouldn't be able to come with in the nick of time.
13:39 If you ever find yourself in the same situation, remember to put on some warm clothes and do the same as the younger Torrance does.
13:48 Number 3.
13:49 Calling the dog the wrong name.
13:51 Terminator 2 Judgment Day.
13:53 In this action-packed sequel, John Connor gets help from the T-800 in surviving an attack from the T-1000.
13:58 The young hero later tries to call and check up on his foster parents.
14:02 Arnold Schwarzenegger's Cyborg then has a clever idea, mimicking Connor's voice and asking for the dog with the wrong name.
14:12 Always one step ahead, the Allied machine uses this as a test to see if the mother is real.
14:17 This baits the evil machine into revealing itself as the liquid metal villain.
14:21 It's a straightforward and successful idea that goes underappreciated in a film of shootouts and chases.
14:36 Number 2.
14:40 Andy's scheme.
14:41 The Shawshank Redemption.
14:42 After going to jail for many years, Andy Dufresne has more than enough time to come up with an amazing plan.
14:47 He works his way into becoming the prison's accountant and develops a complex money laundering scheme for the warden.
14:56 Little do the authorities know his true motivations to take all the cash for himself after he escapes.
15:01 He also chips away at his cell until he can properly tunnel his way to freedom.
15:05 The dramatic exit happens without anyone the wiser, with even Dufresne's closest friends failing to realize it.
15:10 It's such an effective operation that it sets up one of the most satisfying endings in cinematic history.
15:15 Number 1.
15:33 Taking out the competition.
15:34 The Godfather.
15:35 Michael Corleone might be more of an anti-hero, but he's definitely smart about this climactic act in The Godfather.
15:41 He assumes control of the family and decides to take out all of his rivals in one fell swoop.
15:52 During his son's baptism, Corleone orders his associates to go around town and assassinate the other leaders.
16:01 All of it happens simultaneously as the new Don enjoys a quiet ceremony with his loved ones.
16:06 It might be among the more ruthless decisions in any movie, but the choice to take out everybody comes as a strategic, morbid, and ingenious one.
16:13 Do we forget any wise decisions from movie characters? Let us know in the comments below.
