The Christmas lights have officially been switched on in Newcastle
Christmas has officially started in Newcastle as the Christmas lights have been switched on. It is just the start of Christmas celebrations in the city. We attended the switch on to see if people are in the Christmas mood yet and to see who pushed that button.

00:00 Newcastle is starting to look very Christmassy once again now the Christmas lights have been

00:08 But before we get to that we are taking a look at the lead up to the big moment.
00:13 Throughout the night Stephen Caron entertained the huge crowd that had gathered up Grey Street
00:17 with some amazing guests including Frozen princesses, North East duo Khaleesis and the
00:23 star of the Theatre Royals panto Joe McKeldrie.
00:26 And of course there was plenty of fun and games for the public to get involved in and
00:30 even the Grinch showed up to celebrate.
00:43 After all of the performances were over and the Mayor spoke to the crowd it was time to
00:47 switch the lights on.
01:03 For many this is the start of their Christmas celebrations so we spoke to a few people who
01:08 had turned out to watch the lights switched on.
01:22 We did each other when we were 19 and 20 we're now 42 and 43.

01:58 I love the lead up to Christmas and getting in the festive spirit.

02:05 It's just lush.
02:06 It just brings such a nice vibe.
02:07 When you're out shopping late and you've got all the lights around you it's just dead nice.
02:13 We've come to see Fenwick's window and then come to see the lights switched on.
02:18 I'm going back to Australia tomorrow so trying to have a little bit of Christmas spirit with
02:22 the family beforehand.

02:29 It's definitely the start.
02:31 I think once the first of December hits I think that's when all the decorations in the
02:36 house come out.
02:37 Real Christmas spirit comes because we know Santa's on his way.

02:47 So now Christmas has officially started with the installation of this year's Fenwick's
02:51 Christmas window and now the lights have been switched on and even the Christmas markets
02:56 are starting to pop up everywhere.
