00:00 Managing Director of Matrubhumi, Sri M.B.Sarams Kumarji, the entire team and leaders of Matrubhumi,
00:13 distinguished guests, Namaskaram. I am glad to be addressing this program to mark the
00:25 centenary celebrations of Matrubhumi. On this occasion, my greetings to those associated
00:38 with this newspaper. I also recall the contributions of those who have previously worked in this
00:51 media house. Several leading lights such as Sri K.P.Keshav Menon, K.A.Damodar Menon, Kerala
01:05 Gandhi, Sri K.Kalappanji and Karun Nilkandan Namudripadji have been associated with Matrubhumi.
01:19 I would like to remember M.P. Virendra Kumar, who oversaw the rapid growth of Matrubhumi.
01:30 We will never forget his efforts to uphold India's democratic ethos during the emergency.
01:46 He was a great orator, scholar and was passionate about the environment. Friends, inspired by
01:58 Mahatma Gandhi's ideals, Matrubhumi was born to strengthen India's freedom struggle.
02:11 Matrubhumi is a key part of the glorious tradition of newspapers and journals founded all across
02:22 India to unify the people of our nation against colonial rule. If we look back at our history,
02:34 several greats have been associated with some or the other paper. Lokamanya Tilak, Narchad,
02:45 Kesari and Maratha. Gopalkrishna Gokhaleji was associated with Hitvat. Prabuddha Bharat
02:57 was associated with Swami Vivekananda. When we remember Mahatma Gandhi, we also remember
03:06 his birth in young India, Navjeevan and Harijan. Shyamji Krishna Verma edited the Indian sociologist.
03:18 I have just given a few examples. The list is endless. Friends, if Matrubhumi was born
03:29 during India's freedom movement, the centenary celebrations are taking place when India is
03:40 making Aadhaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. We did not have the opportunity to sacrifice our
03:51 lives during the freedom struggle for Swaraj. However, this Amrit Kaal gives us the opportunity
04:10 to work towards a strong, developed and inclusive India. For any nation to develop, making good
04:23 policy is one aspect. But to enable the policies to succeed and to ensure that large-scale
04:36 transformation takes place, active participation from all walks of society is needed. For that,
04:47 the media plays a critical role. In these years, gone by, I have seen the positive impact
05:00 the media can play. The example of the Swachh Bharat Mission is well known. Every media
05:12 house took up this mission with great sincerity. Likewise, the media has played a very encouraging
05:25 role in popularizing yoga, fitness and beti bachao, beti padhao. These are subjects beyond
05:38 the domain of politics and political parties. They are about making a better nation in the
05:48 coming years. In addition to this, there is more that can be done keeping in mind Aadhaadi
05:58 Ka Amrit Mahotsav. These days, we are seeing that people are highlighting lesser-known
06:09 events of the freedom struggle and unsung freedom fighters. The media can be a great
06:18 means to further amplify this. In the same way, every town or village has places associated
06:30 with the freedom movement. Not much is known about them. We could highlight those places
06:41 and encourage people to visit them. Can we encourage the upcoming writers from non-media
06:52 backgrounds and give them a platform to showcase their writing skills? One of India's biggest
07:03 strengths is our diversity. Can we think about making key words of other languages popular
07:14 through your media properties? Friends, in today's day and age, the world has many expectations
07:27 from India. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit our shores, it was speculated that India would
07:37 not be able to manage things well. The people of India proved these critics wrong. We used
07:47 the last two years to improve the health of our society and the health of our economy.
07:57 For two years, 80 crore people got access to free ration. 180 crore doses of vaccines
08:08 have been administered. In a time when many nations are unable to overcome vaccine hesitancy,
08:20 the people of India have shown the way. Powered by India's talented youth, our nation is moving
08:32 towards atma-nirvarta, or self-reliance. At the core of this principle is to make India
08:45 an economic powerhouse that caters to domestic and global needs. Unprecedented reforms were
08:55 brought in which will boost economic progress. Production link incentive schemes were introduced
09:07 in different sectors to encourage local enterprise. India's startup ecosystem has never been more
09:18 vibrant. Youngsters from tier two, tier three towns, and even villages, are doing excellent
09:29 work. Today, India is leading the world in the field of technological advancement. In
09:39 just the past four years, the numbers of UPI transactions have increased over 70 times.
09:50 This shows the eagerness of our people to embrace positive changes. Friends, we fully
10:04 understand the importance of next-generation infrastructure. Rupees 110 lakh crore are
10:18 being spent on a national infrastructure pipeline. PM Gatishakti is going to make infracreation
10:29 and governance more seamless. We are actively working to ensure every village of India has
10:42 high-speed Internet connectivity. The guiding principle of our efforts is to ensure the
10:54 future generations lead a better lifestyle than the present ones. Friends, years ago,
11:07 when Mahatma Gandhi visited Matruhbhumi, he had said, and I quote, "Matruhbhumi is an
11:20 institution that has stood firmly on its own feet. Only can a few newspapers in India do
11:33 that." Hence, among the newspapers of India, the Matruhbhumi has a unique position." I
11:44 am confident Matruhbhumi will live up to these words of Babu. I once again congratulate Matruhbhumi
11:56 for their centenary celebrations and convey my best wishes to the readers. Thank you.
12:04 Jai Hind. Namaskaram.
