New from Yamaha Bicycles is the CrossCore RC pedal-assist bicycle, a Class 3 urban all-rounder. The CrossCore is designed for folks who want a fun and easy pedal-assist bicycle to ride to work, around town, running errands, or basically anywhere anyone would need a general-purpose electric bike.

Editor’s note: We reviewed Yamaha’s ebikes during the 2022 Yamaha CrossCore RC and Wabash RT Review article and video. We’ve also reported on these ebikes in the 2022 Yamaha Wabash RT Electric Bicycle First Look and 2022 Yamaha CrossCore RC Electric Bicycle First Look articles.

Although Yamaha Bicycles is new in the electrical bicycle segment, joining the fray in ’18 in the United States, Yamaha’s been manufacturing pedal assist bicycles in Japan since 1993.
At the heart of its 52-pound CrossCore is a compact electric motor producing up to 59 lb.-ft. of torque and providing support up to 28 mph, powered by a 500-watt battery integrated into the main aluminum frame. The battery is charged by a household-style power adapter; with a full charge, the range is around 100 miles on the lowest power setting.

A clean-looking LCD-style meter keeps tabs on vehicle measurables like speed, distance, and so on, and is where the rider controls the level of pedal assist. After maximum power, everyone’s favorite setting, there’s also standard power, eco, and an eco-plus mode. An automatic setting cycles through the power modes to ensure proper propulsion help regardless of incline or other terrain-related variables. For 2022, Yamaha has added an extra cog inside the rear cassette, taking it from eight to nine speeds. Additionally, the big sprockets have been made bigger, which is better for climbing steep grades...

00:00 Hey folks, good morning. Well, this isn't something you get to do every day. Today,
00:07 we are going to be riding Yamaha Bicycles 2022 Cross Core RC. This is a new and improved
00:19 pedal assist electric bicycle from the Tuning Fork brand. It is designed for folks who want
00:29 a fun and easy pedal assist bicycle to ride to work, to ride around town, to run errands
00:37 on, to ride to the beach, anywhere you would need a general purpose bicycle. Well folks,
00:44 enough talking about this thing. Let's swing a leg over and see what it's like to ride.
00:51 All right folks, here it is. Yamaha's $3,100 2022 Cross Core RC. This is a do-it-all pedal
00:59 assist bicycle from the Tuning Fork brand. It has a motor inside which provides up to
01:07 59 pound feet of torque. Isn't that crazy? 59 pound feet of torque that motor is good
01:13 for. It's got a 500 watt battery that is integrated into this frame here. You use a household,
01:21 old power adapter to charge this battery. With a full charge, this pedal assist bicycle
01:29 has a range of right around 100 miles in its lowest power setting. This thing weighs right
01:39 around 52 pounds with a full tank of, oh, there is no tank of anything besides the 500
01:48 watt battery. The seat post is fixed. This thing rides on big, meaty tires that you can
01:57 take off-road as well as on. Nine speed cassette that is operated through this bicycle conventional
02:06 derailleur. There is the instrument cluster that is the device that allows you to adjust
02:12 the power modes and turn on and off the headlight. Hydraulic disc brakes front and rear. This
02:23 is a really nice vehicle for running around town. Enough talking about it. Let's hop aboard
02:30 it and see what it's like to ride. Hey folks. Good morning. How is it going today? We are
02:38 out here riding Yamaha bicycles 2022 cross core RC. This is a pedal assist bicycle from
02:53 Yamaha bicycles out of Japan. Now Yamaha bicycles is a new entry into the electric bicycle segment.
03:05 They entered the foray right around 2018 here in the United States. Although they are new
03:13 to the electric bicycle segment, Yamaha has actually been making pedal assist bicycles
03:21 in Japan since 1993. Although they are new to the US, this particular category isn't
03:30 new for the tuning fork brand. Now the 2022 cross core RC is designed as basically a general
03:44 dual do it all type of pedal assist bicycle. This bicycle is for someone who's looking
03:51 to be able to run errands around town on. They want a bike to ride to the gym. They
03:57 want a bike to ride to the grocery store. They want to go and ride to the beach with
04:01 their friends. Just a general purpose bicycle with the support of an electric motor. Now
04:12 we are riding this 2022 cross core RC at the official US press introduction of this vehicle.
04:26 Now the cross core RC we're riding, this vehicle costs $3,100. You can purchase it
04:35 at select Yamaha power sport retailers and select electric bicycle dealerships. $3,100
04:48 for this bike. Thank you. It weighs right around 52 pounds and has a range of over 100
04:58 miles when fully charged. Let's bomb down this hill. Woo. Yeah. That was so fun folks.
05:16 I love going fast. We have this nice LCD style meter here and I think I saw a top speed of
05:26 right around 36 miles per hour. No, I'm sorry. That was the range. Probably 28 miles per
05:32 hour was the top speed we just achieved on this vehicle. So this cross core RC is actually
05:39 controlled with this up and down button. So we have high power mode, which unleashes maximum
05:47 power, maximum 59 pound feet torque from this PW gen Yamaha motor. All right folks, 59 pound
06:01 feet torque is what this Yamaha PW generation motor is capable of because even though we're
06:09 riding pedal assist bicycles, we still have to adhere to the laws of the road here in
06:17 the golden state. So we're stopping here at the stop light. Now back to the control interface.
06:24 Right now we are riding in the highest power setting. There's also a standard power setting,
06:29 an eco and an eco plus. We also have a fully automatic range, which is engaged by pressing
06:40 the up arrow. Auto mode automatically cycles through the power to make sure that you have
06:48 the right propulsion regardless of incline or other variables in the terrain that could
06:57 make it difficult to pedal. Now for 2022 Yamaha's added an extra cog inside the rear cassette.
07:07 It used to be eight speed. Now it's nine speed. Additionally, the big sprockets on that rear
07:15 cassette, they are a little bit larger and they're better for climbing steep grades at
07:21 a lower speed. So basically the tuning fork brand just wanted to make this cross core
07:28 a little bit easier to operate in low speed environments up hills. Now we are riding this
07:38 bike here on the street. These spoked wheels and tires that this cross core rolls on, these
07:50 tires are real wide and they're real meaty. So you could absolutely ride this thing off
07:56 road. They have nice big diameter, nice width, so you can go over little bumps and have traction.
08:06 There is no suspension aside from this hydraulic fork here, which can be set into fixed lock
08:19 mode if you don't want it to actually have any suspension travel or open, which we're
08:27 riding in right now. There's a little flip switch here, which you can switch the mode
08:34 between open and locked. This bicycle also has a nice bell so you can let people know
08:44 if you're coming on a trail and it also has this nifty headlight. These are all standard
08:49 features on this $3,100 cross core RC. Now the 500 watt battery is actually integrated
09:00 into this frame rail, which is right here, right down there. And there's a power port
09:08 here, which you use Yamaha's proprietary charger, which is just a basic household power adapter
09:18 that you plug into this input here. And in a few hours, your battery is charged. Super
09:27 easy to use, super easy to charge. And right now it says we have a range of 36 miles in
09:36 standard mode. But if we go down in the power setting, it will continue and have even higher
09:46 range. Now this bike uses a pair of hydraulic Shimano disc brakes to keep speed in check.
10:01 Unlike a motorcycle, the front right facing brake lever controls the rear brake while
10:13 this left brake lever here controls the front brake. That is how bicycles have their brakes
10:21 set up. All right, folks, green light and away we go. Let's give the bell a little love
10:27 so people can hear us coming. Now it's worth noting whenever you're operating these Yamaha
10:36 pedal assist bicycles, you always want to wear the appropriate safety gear. So we have
10:40 a bicycle helmet on right now and we have our fingerless gloves. You want to wear gloves
10:47 just in case you fall, keeps your palms from getting beat up. I like to use the fingerless
10:52 gloves though so I can still operate my iOS enabled smartphone. Yes, a hill. I love hills,
11:01 especially when you have all this power at your disposal. 17 miles per hour on the clock
11:10 going up a nice hill. The torque assist from this Yamaha PW generation motor just makes
11:19 quick work of any hills. So you don't have to be in the highest physical prowess form
11:29 to be able to operate this vehicle. This vehicle is great for someone who maybe doesn't have
11:36 peak physical conditioning and still wants to go outside and smell the flowers and see
11:42 the sights and sounds of the countryside or the cityscape if you are in town. And here
11:52 we are folks riding off road. Like I said, you can ride this bike off road, on road.
12:01 We missed the off road segment, but you get the point. Oh yes, more off road. Awesome.
12:10 Alright folks, we are now on the gravel style fire road with the fine P-Gravel. Now it's
12:19 worth noting that these Yamaha pedal assist bicycles do not benefit just like traditional
12:27 bicycles from anti-lock brakes. So if you grab a big tug of either the front or rear
12:35 brake lever, the tire will lock up. So make sure you use your brakes very judiciously.
12:47 Alright folks, we gotta go. We are going to do our photo shoot now for the fans out there.
12:51 So we'll check in with you guys in a little bit. Well folks, with fuel prices nearing
12:57 $10 per gallon in some parts of the United States, these pedal assist bicycles from Yamaha
13:06 bicycles make a lot of sense. You can get around town really easily. You are getting
13:15 a little bit of exercise. You get to see the sights and sounds of town, smell the flowers
13:21 blooming, be one with the environment, and get a little bit of exercise at the same time.
13:29 And you're going to be saving a whole lot of money. No vehicle payment, no car insurance,
13:37 no $7 a gallon fuel charges, no oil changes. If you live in an urban area, this cross core
13:47 RC does make a lot of sense. Well folks, that was a fun morning cruise on Yamaha's 2022
13:55 cross core RC. I do like riding this motorcycle around, I'm sorry, I do like riding this pedal
14:02 assist bicycle around town. It is comfortable, it's easy to ride, it has good propulsion.
14:09 When you are spinning the pedals, it doesn't cost too much at $3,100. And it would be something
14:16 cool to have hanging in the garage. Actually, I'd like to have two of these things hanging
14:21 in the garage. So if a friend came over, we can go on a fun pedal bike ride. Well folks,
14:27 that's a wrap of today's review on Yamaha's cross core RC pedal assist bicycle. Make sure
14:33 to surf on over to MotorcyclistOnline.com, that's where all of our written content lives.
14:39 Give this video a thumbs up if you liked it, thumbs it down if you didn't, because we love
14:42 to hear from all the haters out there. And we'll see you next time. Thanks for pedaling
14:46 with us today.
