Yamaha Motor tastefully pairs retro styling with modern sport performance with its 2022 XSR900 naked bike.

--

Yamaha pairs retro styling vibes with sport riding ethos with its new and improved 2022 XSR900. Defined as a retro-styled sport naked bike, the ’22 XSR builds on the original platform that debuted for the 2016 model year.

The XSR was originally based on the original FZ-09. The theory behind this platform is having a motorcycle that is sporty, yet includes cool retro styling that recognizes Yamaha’s history of manufacturing some of the most exquisite motorcycles on the road.

Like before, the XSR continues to be based off the overhauled for ’21 MT-09. We have reported on this streetbike extensively during the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 MC Commute Review and Yamaha Builds a Better Triumph - 2021 MT-09 Review articles and videos. This XSR benefits from the same longer-stroke 890cc CP3 triple-cylinder engine. It also benefits from the improved chassis, new suspension, and other creature comforts.

We love this crisp-sounding triple. It offers gobs of torque. It has a really sweet engine and exhaust note, and it puts out a good amount of power to the tune of nearly 106 hp and upwards of 63 lb.-ft. torque at the contact patch of the OE-fitted 180-series Bridgestone Battlax S22 shoe...

00:02 Hey folks, we just got done riding
00:23 Yamaha Motors 2022 XSR900.
00:28 This is a retro styled sport bike
00:33 from the tuning fork brand out of Japan.
00:36 Now this XSR900 platform originally debuted
00:41 for the 2016 model year.
00:45 It was based off the original FZ09.
00:49 Now the whole theory behind this XSR900 platform
00:56 is having a motorcycle that is sporty,
01:00 yet still has cool retro styling
01:04 and pays homage to where Yamaha has been
01:08 over the last few decades of making some
01:10 of the most exquisite motorcycles on the road.
01:13 Now for 2022 Yamaha Motors fully overhauled this vehicle.
01:18 It's based at its core off the overhaul
01:22 for the 2021 model year MT09,
01:27 which we have reported on extensively on this channel
01:31 and our Motorcyclist Online blog.
01:36 Now for 2022, this vehicle benefits
01:39 from the long stroke 890CC CP3 triple cylinder engine.
01:44 I love this engine.
01:49 It also benefits from the tweaked chassis,
01:53 new suspension and a bunch of other parts.
01:57 Let's get into it.
01:58 I love the engine on this XSR900.
02:02 It has gobs of torque.
02:04 It has a really sweet engine and exhaust note
02:08 and it puts out a good amount of power,
02:12 right around 105 horsepower at the business
02:17 end of the OE fitted Bridgestone Batlax S22 rubber.
02:22 Now this CP3 engine now benefits from updated electronics.
02:29 This vehicle now has four adjustable combined engine
02:35 and throttle maps.
02:37 One is the most aggressive, four is the least.
02:40 Of course, we like the intimate response
02:43 of the first setting.
02:45 You also have IMU power traction control
02:49 and wheelie control.
02:51 Yamaha calls it lift control.
02:54 It's very easy to customize the settings
02:57 inside the menu system.
03:01 We also have brake control.
03:04 So in the setting BC setting one,
03:07 that is the less aggressive brake setting.
03:10 In that setting, you have no cornering function,
03:15 where conversely in BC level two,
03:18 you have cornering ABS.
03:19 Yamaha Motor won't call it that,
03:21 but that's what it is.
03:22 But the ABS kicks on a little bit more aggressively.
03:27 Still, even at our pace,
03:29 we didn't really have the ABS kick on at all.
03:32 The ABS program on this motorcycle
03:34 is calibrated very well for its intended use,
03:38 which is a mix of street riding and track riding.
03:42 Speaking of track riding, we rode this bike
03:45 at Chukwala Valley Raceway in Southern California
03:48 and Sonoma Raceway in Northern California.
03:51 And this motorcycle is an absolute hoot
03:53 to ride on at the track.
03:55 We like the more aggressive ergonomics,
03:57 courtesy of that slightly lower Clubman handlebar,
04:02 slightly lower seat,
04:03 and a little bit more far forward canted riding position.
04:07 The adjustable foot pegs is another nice touch.
04:10 We have the foot pegs in the lower setting,
04:12 but if you wanted a little bit more ground clearance,
04:14 or maybe you're a little bit smaller of a rider
04:17 in terms of stature,
04:18 you can move those foot pegs up a little bit.
04:21 I really like the way this motorcycle handles the track.
04:24 Despite its nearly two inch longer swing arm,
04:28 this thing's got a long wheel base,
04:30 but it really cuts directions really well.
04:33 But because it has a long wheel base,
04:35 it almost kind of feels like a Hayabusa on the track,
04:37 where it's got a lot of stability.
04:40 You lean this thing over,
04:42 and you can just light up that rear tire,
04:44 and this bike isn't doing anything crazy,
04:46 'cause it's got that long wheel base
04:49 that tracks so splendidly.
04:52 Probably the only downside of having that long wheel base
04:55 is that front tire feels kicked out a little bit far,
04:58 so the feel's not the best
05:00 when you're at max lean on this bike,
05:02 but it's still enough to get the blood pumping.
05:05 It's still enough to have fun.
05:07 Those Batlax S22OE fitted tires,
05:11 they work really good on the street, on the track.
05:15 I love the suspension on this motorcycle,
05:17 especially for street riding.
05:19 With over five inches of suspension travel,
05:21 this motorcycle really sucks the bumps up
05:23 really well on the street.
05:26 I like that you can totally adjust the damping
05:29 and the spring preload of the fork.
05:31 The shock has less adjustment, and it works well,
05:35 but I'm not totally sold on that upside-down-type linkage
05:39 that these MT09s and XSR900s now employ.
05:44 They work great for straight street duty.
05:46 They go over the bumps really well
05:48 and absorb the road imperfections
05:50 with a high degree of capability,
05:53 but on the racetrack, it loses a little bit
05:57 of its handling performance
06:00 when you're really on the edge of the tire,
06:01 but then again, these bikes aren't track bikes.
06:04 They're street bikes, and they flirt that line very well.
06:09 Now, we rode this motorcycle at night,
06:11 and the LED headlamp does a very nice job
06:14 of illuminating the road ahead.
06:16 I like that this vehicle comes with LED turn signals
06:20 and an LED tail light.
06:24 Styling on this motorcycle.
06:25 Styling on this vehicle is one of my favorite features.
06:28 I love how the 2NuFork brand
06:31 is paying homage to where it's been.
06:34 I love this boxy-style seat junction here,
06:38 the way the fuel tank's shaped,
06:39 these quick-release fasteners on this motorcycle.
06:43 This motorcycle has a lot of cool styling touches
06:46 that make you feel like you're riding an old Yamaha bike,
06:49 but it's new.
06:50 This legend blue paint that Yamaha used to run
06:55 on its '80s-era GP bikes, it's just stunning.
06:58 This bike just looks so awesome.
07:00 When you pull up to a stop sign,
07:02 people are gonna notice you on this motorcycle.
07:06 The rear-view mirrors,
07:08 I like how they're integrated into the bike
07:11 in terms of styling,
07:12 but they make the handlebars so wide.
07:15 When you're splitting lanes in traffic
07:17 or even maneuvering through the garage,
07:19 this motorcycle is so wide.
07:21 I wish this bike had just traditional mirror stalks,
07:25 but we can live with it on this bike.
07:28 I really like that Brembo radial mount master cylinder.
07:33 That master cylinder gives really good braking feel
07:37 when you are on the front brakes of this motorcycle.
07:40 The rear brakes also very powerful, has a lot of feel.
07:44 This motorcycle stops really quickly,
07:47 has really good braking response.
07:51 Other neat features about this motorcycle
07:53 are its durability.
07:55 This motorcycle goes 6,000 miles between oil changes,
08:00 12,000 miles between engine oil filter changes,
08:05 and the valve inspection interval
08:08 on this 890cc CP3 engine is 24,000 miles.
08:13 So you're not gonna spend a lot of money
08:16 monkeying with this bike.
08:17 These bikes are built to last,
08:19 they're made in Japan,
08:20 and they come with a one-year warranty.
08:24 Some people will be like, "Oh, I want a two, three-year
08:26 "warranty," but in our experience,
08:28 these Yamaha motor vehicles are built for tough,
08:32 and they last the distance.
08:34 Aside from the mirrors, another fault I have with this bike
08:37 is just the fuel tank, 3.7 gallons of fuel capacity.
08:41 That's not a lot.
08:42 I know Yamaha's done improvements to make this vehicle
08:45 and this engine more efficient,
08:47 but still, we're only averaging 35, 36 miles per gallon
08:50 on this bike, and with a 3.7-gallon fuel tank,
08:54 you don't have a lot of range.
08:56 I wish this motorcycle, like many bikes,
08:59 had a larger fuel tank.
09:02 I also wish the color instrumentation was bigger.
09:07 The instrumentation's nice, it's sharp and it's crisp,
09:09 but it's a little bit small,
09:11 and the tactile function of the switch gear,
09:14 while it's easy to use after you figure out
09:16 how to navigate the menu system,
09:18 especially if you've ridden other Yamaha motorcycles,
09:20 'cause they're all basically the same,
09:22 the tactile function on the buttons and the switches
09:24 isn't very good.
09:25 When they debuted that style switch gear
09:27 on the 2015 YZF-R1, it was awesome.
09:31 Fast forward seven years and it feels just downright old.
09:35 We'd like to see some improvements on the color TFT size
09:39 and the tactile function of the switch gear,
09:42 but besides those few knocks, for $10,000,
09:46 this is a really nice motorcycle.
09:48 The engine has tons of performance.
09:51 It sounds just as awesome as a Triumph triple,
09:55 yet it has less vibration through the controls.
09:58 It handles really well in the street and the track,
10:00 soaks up the bumps real nice, has good brakes,
10:03 has a lot of good, easy to use electronics
10:05 that help you ride the motorcycle more to your potential,
10:09 and it's just a plain awesome bike.
10:11 If you're looking for a fun and affordable retro sport bike
10:15 that checks a lot of boxes, look into this 2022 XSR900.
10:20 All right, folks, that wraps up our review
