BMW Motorrad offers sport-touring motorcyclists something special with its six-cylinder K 1600 series platform. The K 1600 platform originally debuted in the United States for the 2012 model year. Fast forward to 2016, and BMW has expanded the lineup to include a bagger variation in the K 1600 B. For 2022, BMW Motorrad has modernized the platform. We tested the bagger variation in the BMW K 1600 B ($27,115 as tested).

As the model name indicates, the K 1600 is powered by BMW’s rowdy liquid-cooled 1,649cc inline six. This bike makes nearly 135 hp at the business end of the 17-inch Bridgestone, these now arriving 1,000 RPM earlier in its powerband. It still makes nearly 116 pound-feet of torque, but the peak arrives at higher RPM versus bikes like Honda’s Gold Wing.
What sets this Beemer apart from others in this premium segment is its flexible powerband. Lug it low and this inline-six offers plenty of torque to get you moving quickly. Short shift through the slick-shifting and electronic quickshifter-equipped (Motorrad calls it Gear Shift Assist Pro) six-speed gearbox and you’re riding a wave of torque to triple digit speeds in no time.
Conversely, if you’re riding in a more sport-oriented fashion or with faster guys and gals on high-performance sportbikes, rev it out and listen to its six cylinders scream. The 1600 B has a borderline ridiculous amount of acceleration force for a heavyweight touring rig. With the throttle pinned, it’s pure F1-like exhilaration, winding out the engine and rowing through the transmission while you're pushed deep into the cozy saddle...

00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 Hey folks, we just got done riding
00:20 BMW Motorrad's 2022 K1600B.
00:24 This is a bagger specific variation
00:27 of BMW Motorrad's K1600 luxury touring platform.
00:32 This platform originally debuted in the United States
00:35 for the 2012 model year.
00:37 Fast forward to 2016 and BMW debuted
00:40 this K1600B designation bike.
00:43 And now moving on to 2022 model year,
00:45 BMW Motorrad's done a host of subtle improvements
00:48 to make this motorcycle even better.
00:51 Let's begin with the engine.
00:53 This vehicle continues to be powered
00:54 by BMW's awesome 1649 CC inline six.
00:59 This bike makes peak power right around 135 ponies
01:05 at the back tire, 1000 RPM earlier in its power band.
01:10 It still makes nearly 116 pound feet of torque,
01:13 but it comes at a little bit higher RPM.
01:16 Now what I really like about this engine,
01:18 it's flexible power band.
01:20 If you want, you can lug this just above idle
01:23 and this thing has plenty of torque
01:25 to get to where you need.
01:27 You can short shift through the six speed gearbox
01:29 and you're just riding a wave of torque everywhere you go.
01:32 Conversely, if you're riding
01:34 in a more sport orientated environment
01:36 or riding with guys with faster high performance bikes,
01:39 you rev this thing out and this thing just makes
01:42 a hellacial amount of acceleration force.
01:46 Suspension.
01:47 This vehicle continues to employ
01:49 BMW's dual lever front suspension.
01:52 Now dual lever front suspension separates
01:55 the steering function and the damping function
01:58 of the front suspension.
02:00 This is nearly a 800 pound motorcycle,
02:03 yet when you're riding it,
02:04 the steering is exceptionally light
02:06 and it also has extremely favorable damping qualities.
02:11 This thing rides so well on the road.
02:14 You can hit bumps, you can hit big potholes
02:17 and it just delivers such a nice supple ride.
02:21 Electronics.
02:22 Now this K1600B is loaded with all the bells and whistles,
02:26 heated grips, heated seat, cruise control.
02:30 This motorcycle also has
02:32 an electronically adjustable windscreen.
02:34 This vehicle also now employs IMU power traction control.
02:39 Allows it to have lean sensitive traction control.
02:42 It also now has lean sensitive engine drag torque setting.
02:46 And basically what that does,
02:48 if you downshift in too low of a gear,
02:50 the throttle bodies actually give the engine
02:52 a little bit of gas just to help limit that back torque
02:55 and help mitigate instability on slippery pavement.
02:59 A seven gallon fuel tank lets you cover some ground
03:03 between fill ups.
03:04 We average right around 32 miles per gallon on this bike.
03:08 This vehicle has navigation,
03:11 but it doesn't have navigation in a traditional way.
03:14 To navigate on this motorcycle,
03:15 you actually have to be a little bit tech savvy.
03:17 You have to download BMW's iOS and Android
03:21 enabled connected app.
03:23 This vehicle now employs LED headlights
03:27 with cornering function.
03:28 We rode this motorcycle after dark
03:30 and the cornering function on the headlights,
03:33 it works okay, but we've ridden motorcycles
03:35 that have better cornering functions.
03:38 Which brings us to price.
03:39 This motorcycle rings in at $22,500 in base configuration.
03:45 This also has the executive styling package,
03:48 which includes this metallic black paint,
03:51 these cool air deflectors and the engine spoilers.
03:55 This also has the bagger package
03:58 that includes electronic central locking system,
04:02 this center stand, keyless remote fob,
04:06 which I'm never a big fan of,
04:07 but in this bike, it works okay.
04:10 This motorcycle has the capability
04:11 of swallowing 17 gallons of cargo.
04:14 I like the electronic luggage system.
04:16 It works real good, keeps your valuables safe.
04:19 I absolutely would pony up the $27,000
04:22 for this motorcycle as it sits.
04:25 It's a really nice bike.
