00:00 Twist this little dial on the steering wheel to get you into sport, into sport plus, into race!
00:06 If you're trying to go fast.
00:08 Has the AMG GT gone soft? We wouldn't blame you for being skeptical.
00:23 So this car compared to its predecessor, all-wheel drive is now standard.
00:28 There are two seats in the back and it was developed alongside the SL.
00:33 So the question is, is this still the best driving Mercedes?
00:37 We loved the first gen AMG GT.
00:41 We called it our 2015 best driver's car. Best in the world.
00:44 Above the Porsche Cayman GT4, Corvette Z06.
00:48 So we were a little concerned to hear that the folks at AMG were going for a more practical and more daily drivable
00:55 sports car with this 2024 model. Now one thing we're not worried about is power.
01:00 You still have that 4-liter twin-turbo AMG V8, hand-built by one man.
01:06 And here it's putting out 577 horsepower.
01:10 It's also still incredibly stylish. You have this really long hood, aggressive front end, big 20-inch wheels.
01:17 I really enjoy this Patagonia red metallic paint.
01:21 And when you come around the back, you see a taillight signature that's clearly inspired by the AMG One,
01:27 that Formula One engine, crazy hybrid hypercar thing.
01:32 Plus, when you're around back, you can see some of that newfound practicality.
01:37 Look how big this trunk is! With those rear seats folded down,
01:41 you can easily fit a bike back there without taking it apart and getting your hands all greasy.
01:49 So one of the biggest changes for 2024 in response to customer demand, the AMG GT now has rear seats.
01:56 But I'm skeptical if full-size people can actually fit back there.
02:01 Someone could drive, but I can't sit up.
02:05 Mercedes and AMG say that if you're 4'11" or less, you should be able to hang out back here just fine.
02:13 [Music]
02:19 So we've established it's still a looker. You can throw a bike in the back.
02:22 You can put a child or a very short friend in the back seat.
02:27 But does this car still drive like an AMG GT should?
02:31 Come in the passenger seat with me. We'll go for a drive.
02:34 [Car driving]
02:45 So first impressions, it's way quieter in here than I expected.
02:49 You know, compared to a Porsche 911, a Corvette Z06,
02:54 this is positively subdued when it's in that comfort mode.
02:59 I mean, this is basically an S-Class.
03:03 But then you turn up the wick a little bit,
03:06 and that snarl turns to roar.
03:10 And you feel all those 577 twin turbocharged horse powers.
03:18 Now what's impressive is that even though the AMG GT is way more comfortable
03:31 on the highway, on bumpy roads, on, you know, your lumpy morning commute
03:37 than last year's car, it manages to not be punishing or unstable
03:44 if you find some broken pavement and you're driving quickly.
03:49 I've been driving this thing for a little while now, and even if you hit a fat bump mid-corner,
03:55 you're not going to lose traction. You're not going to go unstable.
03:59 The AMG feels planted, feels solid at all times.
04:04 Now this doesn't feel as light, as snappy, as darty as a 992 911.
04:12 This is a different beast than that car.
04:15 But that doesn't mean it's any less capable or less fun.
04:22 But with that AMG Dynamics mode, this doesn't feel like a WRX kind of all-wheel drive.
04:31 This feels like a 911 Carrera 4, an old E30 325iX.
04:38 This is a primarily rear-wheel-driven sports car.
04:43 That engine, it's working.
04:50 [engine revving]
04:53 Oh my God. You can really lean on it.
04:58 It's incredible that a car with this much civility, this much comfort, this much quietude on the highway
05:06 can also have this much control on a road like we're on right now.
05:13 [engine revving]
05:16 (whooshing)
