Thousands of people take to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro to cool off as a heatwave strikes parts of Brazil in the middle of spring. According to the Alerta Rio system, the maximum temperature recorded on Sunday was 42.5 degrees Celsius in Iraja, a working-class neighborhood in the north of the city. The previous record in 2023 was 41.8 degrees Celsius in February, in the middle of summer.
