00:00 Brendan Gun, how are you?
00:08 Very well, very well.
00:09 Thank you for having me.
00:10 Okay, my first question.
00:13 Your opinion about Selangor squad this season?
00:16 I think being with Selangor for the past four seasons, we've grown into a team that I feel
00:24 like has probably the highest potential to have success.
00:31 In saying that, I feel the young players who have come through have had now that experience
00:36 in the first team, not only with training and amongst the older boys, but also they've
00:42 had a lot of time during the Super League as well.
00:45 So I think that building over the last few seasons to get to this season, I think the
00:51 players have a really, really good foundation around them.
00:56 And I think that a lot has been instilled in them in terms of hard work ethic, also
01:02 in terms of a winning mentality this year.
01:06 So we are doing well, still early in the season at the moment.
01:11 So we will still keep building and still keep getting better.
01:14 I don't think we are anywhere close to where we can be or where we know we can be, but
01:20 it comes in time and it has shown over the past four years to get to this point.
01:25 It has taken time.
01:26 So the players are a great bunch of boys.
01:30 We work for each other.
01:31 We're a team.
01:32 We play together and hopefully this will be just the starting point for us moving forward.
01:37 Is it realistic for Selangor to finish the Super League season in top three?
01:42 Of course.
01:43 The squad we have, we always want to finish as high as possible.
01:48 And there's never a guarantee in Malaysian football or the Super League.
01:54 Every game is a tough game.
01:56 Everyone has a good squad and able to beat anyone on any given day.
02:01 But I guess that's where, as Selangor and as the captain of Selangor, I want to instil
02:05 that we are the team that needs to be winning every game.
02:09 We need to have that mentality of winning every game, not going in there and also saying,
02:14 "Oh, this is going to be a tough game today."
02:17 So we need to have that mentality of not underestimating the teams, but knowing that we are an extremely
02:24 good squad and we can get positive results.
02:28 Brendan, your personal opinion about Coach Tan?
02:31 I've worked with Coach Tan for a long time now, with the national team and obviously
02:36 now here last season and this season.
02:39 And I think we have a great relationship.
02:42 We're able to bounce ideas off each other and see how the team can move forward and
02:49 get better and not just stay stagnant.
02:52 I think that's what Coach Tan is great at doing.
02:54 He's always building and always getting better every day.
02:57 And he always uses the quote, "0.5% every day to get better."
03:04 And we must focus on that.
03:06 It's not the leaping forward in terms of success.
03:11 It's taking those small steps and putting the right things in place to be able to get
03:16 that success.
03:17 He's the type of coach that is all about details.
03:21 I think that it's shown a lot, especially with the players that we have in this squad
03:25 this year, is that the small details really are the ones that are going to push us forward.
03:30 Who is your closest teammate in Slango?
03:34 It's hard to say.
03:35 I'd probably say Quinton because he lives in the same building that I live in and we
03:38 drive to training.
03:41 I drive to training because he's only just got his license.
03:45 But he'll get better at driving and hopefully he can be my chauffeur from now on.
03:52 Who is the most happy-go-lucky teammate in Slango?
03:55 Happy-go-lucky?
03:56 Crazy?
03:57 Crazy.
03:58 BJ is a bit of a crazy one.
04:00 I think it's quite funny.
04:02 If he's put in front of the limelight, you will see that he's very shy and doesn't want
04:07 to be in the limelight.
04:08 He's quite reserved.
04:10 But you get him in the change room and he's one of the loudest, funniest jokesters in
04:14 the team.
04:15 I think he's great for the team and brings that positive energy and that big smile that
04:21 any team really needs, especially in the tough times.
04:23 You always need players that are able to turn a negative into a positive or someone to be
04:30 able to change that mood within a team.
04:33 It's great to have a fair few of those within the team.
04:36 But BJ, I guess, is a bit of a standout.
04:38 How about Micky?
04:39 Yeah, Micky's a bit of a larrikin as well.
04:42 He's always joking around.
04:46 Obviously new to the team this year and finding his feet within the team.
04:49 I think he's done very well so far.
04:52 Obviously changing tactics isn't the easiest thing to do.
04:54 Coming from Tringanu to here is probably totally different tactics for him.
04:59 I think he's done quite well at the start of his tenure in Slangor.
05:05 I know that by playing with him, he's got a lot to offer for Slangor.
05:12 We're going to help him.
05:13 We're going to be there to support him.
05:16 Hopefully, with his comfort levels getting higher and higher, he will be able to produce
05:23 more and more for us.
05:24 I think the quality that he has, he can really be a game changer for us.
05:29 Who is your idol in football and why, Brendan?
05:33 An idol in football?
05:34 Is that a hard question for you?
05:35 I think it is a tough question.
05:37 I could say a player that I really like or I could say my dad.
05:44 He was a big influence in my career.
05:47 He played football himself, not at the top level, but he played football, loved football,
05:51 watched football, got me into football, made me really love football.
05:57 My dad, I could say, is probably my biggest idol in terms of being the support system
06:03 that I needed growing up and keeping me level-headed, keeping me down to earth, making sure that
06:10 I don't get too big for my boots and making sure that when I do give advice to others,
06:17 it is that type of advice.
06:18 It's not advice that would mislead another player into doing something not the correct
06:26 way.
06:27 Yeah, probably my dad would be it, but on the other hand, I loved growing up watching
06:33 Zola, Diego Franco Zola, I loved watching him.
06:35 Another one, Paul Scholes, I think he goes under the radar a little bit, but I usually
06:39 sometimes watch some Paul Scholes clips before I go out and play, so maybe something like
06:45 him.
06:46 Your personal target this season?
06:49 It's always to win, right?
06:50 The personal targets are always to win.
06:54 And win as a team.
06:55 We can't win individually.
06:57 Making sure, I guess my target is to really push the team, push them to their maximum
07:03 potential and find out where that line is, where that limit is.
07:07 Because I feel like in the past, maybe we haven't reached that limit.
07:11 Maybe we haven't pushed ourselves to the point where we can produce the quality that we should
07:17 be producing week in, week out.
07:19 So I think, personally for myself, is to really guide the team and make sure that we are living
07:25 up to our potential and I think if we do that, then we will have success.
07:30 Any words to the Slang Offence, Brendan?
07:32 I think the one thing I always come back to is continue to support us, through the thick
07:38 and the thin.
07:39 Through the good times, through the bad times, we need them.
07:42 We need you guys to be there.
07:45 When we are winning, we want to celebrate with you.
07:48 When we are losing, that's when we need you.
07:50 When we are going through tough times, that's when we need you the most.
07:53 We need you to spur us on, we need you to be our 12th man.
07:56 We need you to push us to be better.
07:59 When we are winning, when we are doing well, we want to celebrate with you.
08:02 We want to enjoy the occasions.
08:04 So I think, for what they've been doing for us this season, they've been turning up for
08:08 us.
08:09 Our home games, we've had a few home games in a row and they've been there to support
08:12 us and I think it's just a matter of continue to do that.
08:15 Continue to be there and we will give as much as we possibly can.
08:18 We will give more than we can back to the fans and hopefully that will result in a lot
08:24 of success for them as well as for us.
08:26 Okay, Brendan, thank you very much for your time.
08:28 Good luck and all the best.
08:29 Thank you very much.
08:30 Thank you.
