00:04 >> Joe, what are some of the challenges Joshua Duff is gonna present this week?
00:09 >> I was with him in Cleveland for quite a while.
00:13 He's a guy that the players rally around.
00:16 He'd always get in the game and just find a way to make a play.
00:20 He definitely has the arm strength to make the throws.
00:23 He's played in quite a fitness league, but
00:25 he definitely extends plays with his legs.
00:27 You see the guys last week, they rally around him.
00:30 He's just that type of personality.
00:32 So it's gonna be tough.
00:33 >> Is he one of the more mobile quarterbacks out of the ones you guys have
00:35 faced so far this year?
00:37 >> They all seem mobile right now.
00:39 So I'm sure going into it, you know that's what type of player he is.
00:43 I know back when he was at Pittsburgh, he had a lot of design quarterback runs.
00:47 Then when he came to Cleveland,
00:50 there was more things involved in what he was doing.
00:53 But it's definitely gonna be a problem for
00:57 us just in terms of what we do to try to keep him in the pocket.
00:59 >> What is it about him that you feel like makes teams rally around him?
01:03 >> He's just that type of guy.
01:04 I don't know, man.
01:04 He's just like him.
01:06 He's around there.
01:06 He just has that personality.
01:09 The personality, people gravitate towards him.
01:11 Like I said, he gets in the game, man.
01:13 He just finds a way to make incredible plays.
01:15 I've witnessed it.
01:16 So I was one of the people in there cheering with him.
01:19 >> When you talk to him, can you tell he's a rocket scientist?
01:23 >> I don't know about that.
01:24 I know he's smart.
01:25 But no, this great guy, I know he was able to handle a lot of football
01:30 there in terms of what they were asking from him.
01:34 But in terms of being a rocket scientist, I don't know.
01:38 >> Smart guy.
01:39 >> Yeah, he's a smart guy.
01:40 >> Joe, how do you coach the defensive line and
01:44 to not give up these rushing lanes, but then allow them to still be aggressive and
01:49 try to get to the quarterback?
01:50 Seems like probably issue one and issue two, and
01:54 they kind of fight each other a little bit, right?
01:56 >> I think the first thing is that from a defensive line standpoint,
02:01 it's really there's different ways that we can attack.
02:04 If it's four man rush, there's six gaps.
02:07 So they're short two already.
02:08 So they have to do a great job just in terms of executing their pass rush games.
02:12 Cuz it's individual rushes meshed together to try to get after the quarterback.
02:17 But at the same time for us defensively, we have to mix what we're doing.
02:21 Whether it's four man rush, whether it's bringing pressure,
02:24 whether it's having somebody spy, but you have to have different packages,
02:28 especially when you're trying to defend a mobile quarterback.
02:32 >> And those issues, I mean, everybody's kind of explained it that if people
02:36 are rushing individually, you lose sort of the team concept.
02:38 >> Yeah.
02:39 >> I mean, can that spring from guys who haven't gotten to the quarterback all
02:43 game and frustration creeping in?
02:45 >> No, I think that's part of it at times, but
02:47 I just think it's those guys just working together.
02:49 Just understand us making the corrections and again, it can't always be on them.
02:54 We have to do different things cuz again, it's hard when it's just four man rush
02:58 because there's extra gaps.
03:00 So that's something that we talk about, just doing different things.
03:03 And we know it's a problem, obviously, everybody knows it's a problem.
03:06 So we have to do a better job of game planning for
03:09 some better situations as well.
03:11 >> I know you guys made a huge emphasis this offseason,
03:14 turn around those takeaway numbers.
03:16 But how do you get that to actually manifest itself in the play?
03:20 >> I think it's just confidence.
03:22 Cuz I always believe you get takeaways by playing good technique.
03:27 And it's a product of rushing coverage working together.
03:31 Whether it's man coverage, pressure zone.
03:34 But I think if you just execute your technique,
03:36 put yourself in a good position, it comes down to just catching the ball.
03:39 And that's what I thought I saw on tape when I looked at it last year,
03:42 is just the ability to make plays running through traffic.
03:45 Cuz the opportunities were there.
03:47 So I just try to do ball drills with those guys a lot in different situations.
03:53 And just show them on tape those opportunities.
03:55 We do take advantage of those, and the ones we leave out.
03:59 >> And we've seen Paulson now a couple times, the top down punch.
04:04 How difficult is that for guys to really nail in the seat?
04:08 Especially the other day.
04:10 >> I think the first thing is you gotta run to the ball.
04:12 Cuz if you don't run to the ball, you're not gonna have those opportunities.
04:14 So I think it's really about effort, getting there.
04:17 Then it has to be second nature.
04:19 And that's something that DA talked to us all about last week.
04:22 Put big emphasis on it, and we ended up getting two takeaways.
04:26 Strip fumbles or top down punch out.
04:29 So this has to be part of what you do.
04:30 [BLANK_AUDIO]
04:34 >> Jeff, with the brush, I'll just get back to it a little bit.
04:37 It sounds simple, but when you gotta break it down, obviously,
04:40 it's like you're not calling plays.
04:42 It's everyone kind of doing their own thing, but it has to work together.
04:44 Is that a challenge they're kind of getting?
04:46 Because it's not just one person, everyone has to kind of get it on their own.
04:49 >> Absolutely, like I said, it's individual rushes meshed together.
04:54 And it all has to work.
04:55 You guys have to work together.
04:56 Sometimes you're the sacrificial lamb.
04:59 You're setting the pit, you ain't gonna get there, but the other guy will.
05:02 So it's working together, and I know our guys do a great job.
05:05 We've just been unfortunate.
05:07 And again, there's more things we have to do.
05:09 Whether it's three man rush with different things or four man rush with a little
05:12 pressure, and we know that.
05:14 So we put emphasis on it, and we know we have to do much better,
05:16 especially in this game, based on who we're playing.
05:19 >> And I mean, logically, they pay more time on task than we just,
05:22 you'd imagine that would improve over time.
05:24 >> Yeah, absolutely.
05:26 Guys working together, getting comfortable.
