00:00 what he was doing in Arizona was pretty electric.
00:03 And what he did last week against Atlanta was astounding,
00:08 the way he extended plays off with his feet.
00:09 So it's gotta be on the D line.
00:10 We've gotta be able to collapse the pocket.
00:12 We've gotta be able to, it's another one of those weeks where it's no fun to rush
00:15 a quarterback.
00:16 And we faced like three or four or five of those already this year.
00:19 Where it's like you'd love to hit the top edge of a rush or run eight yards in, but
00:24 that's gonna leave the gashes on the defense and you can't do it.
00:27 I think our defensive line has congealed enough with our interior where now we can
00:33 start talking about, all right, this is what we have to do.
00:35 We were asking you to do it, now we're telling you to do it and it has to get done.
00:39 >> Does that line, I mean, the pressure numbers aren't maybe what you guys
00:43 would expect for- >> No, no, does pressure equal what?
00:47 What does that equal for anybody?
00:48 You wanna give pressure to the quarterback for sure, but
00:52 are pressure numbers down or up?
00:53 >> Down.
00:54 >> They're down this year.
00:56 Gosh darn it.
00:57 In terms of defensive blitz, are we talking about personally speaking?
01:00 I don't know anymore.
01:00 At some point, we're trying to put together wins.
01:03 So we're facing these mobile quarterbacks.
01:08 We're not allowed to pass rush to our highest capacity because it's one of
01:10 those things where you have to collapse the pumpkin to have your eye on the
01:12 quarterback.
01:14 It just is what it is.
01:15 Again, I'm here to get wins.
01:16 I'm not here to get pressures.
01:18 Or it's great to have pressures if those pressures lead to us winning.
01:22 At the end of the day, we wanna do our job to our highest ability and
01:27 that hopefully puts our team in a better position to win.
01:30 It was five turnovers at this point.
01:32 If we say pressures are down, also turnovers are more than double up from
01:36 last year.
01:36 So it goes hand in hand.
01:39 >> So does that mean obviously you like sacks, but
01:44 you think what you've done has been effective?
01:47 Even when you're supposed to?
01:49 You're willing to reluctantly admit that you're okay with this if it's-
01:53 >> I'm okay with winning.
01:54 >> Yeah. >> I mean, that's what we strive for.
01:56 I mean, do I wanna have 13, 14 sacks by now?
01:59 Sure, in a great year, but I have six?
02:01 Yes.
02:01 Have I split a whole bunch of sacks?
02:02 Absolutely.
02:03 Are pressures cool?
02:04 Fine.
02:05 But at the end day, when that game clock ends, are we winning?
02:10 You could have three sacks and a loss that doesn't hit the same as zero sacks and
02:16 a win.
02:17 It doesn't hit the same as success as a team.
02:19 I think personal accolades are great.
02:22 Team wins are better.
02:25 >> And when you say that you, I mean, you haven't faced necessarily a lot of
02:28 run first quarterbacks, but that's been a plan?
02:32 >> We face a lot of first read and then run quarterbacks.
02:36 It's instead of read the defense and then whatever it is.
02:40 >> And so that's led to that approach?
02:42 >> It is what it is.
02:43 You have to be aware of how we've been gassed.
02:46 78 yards out of 100 and however many,
02:48 all around this past game was from the quarterback.
02:54 The week before that, whatever it was,
02:55 it was another 40 or 50 yards from the quarterback.
02:58 Trevor Lawrence had another 40 or 50 yards from the quarterback.
03:00 It seems like these 50 yard clips are happening and escaping from our,
03:05 wherever it is, the sleuthing out the gaps or taking around and whatever that is.
03:10 We have to be able to win that game.
03:11 Once we get that off the film, we can get back to doing what I know we can do.
03:15 >> Have you felt like the in game adjustments to that?
03:17 Because I think with Tyson last week, he had like 16 the first half and
03:20 he held him like 10 rushing yards.
03:22 Have you felt like the in game adjustments to adjust how that has been better?
03:26 >> Which has led you guys to ask us a lot about how do we start fast and
03:31 keep that foot on the pedal.
03:33 It has to be a team collective effort.
03:36 It has to be a D line conscious rush,
03:40 which is great when you're rushing three against five.
03:43 But you have to know exactly what you're going against.
03:45 And you have a mobile quarterback again.
03:48 Had it been not badgered, but Justin Fields would have been the same type rush.
03:52 The games we play, the quarterbacks we face, it just is what it is.
03:58 >> Based on the film that you have seen,
03:59 what makes Josh Joff maybe more elusive in getting out of his pocket?
04:03 >> Probably cuz there's not a lot of film on him.
04:05 He's been in the league for a long time.
04:06 When you're watching, we're breaking down preseason games still.
04:10 We're breaking down Arizona Cardinals games and now the Vikings game.
04:13 But that small sample, he's extending plays.
04:17 He's doing a lot of the right things.
04:19 I hate to see it as a rusher.
04:21 >> You know, with the rush lanes and kind of like four rushers working together,
04:25 is that something that when you make some changes-
04:27 >> Four rushers, you said four?
04:28 >> Four, however many you have.
04:30 >> 3D lining the right back.
04:32 >> With a few changes on the interior, is that something that takes some time in
04:35 terms of just understanding how everyone wants to play and
04:38 how they react to certain things?
04:40 >> Yeah, I mean, in terms of our defense and what we like to do,
04:43 it has to be a clear line of communication, which it has been.
04:49 So when a quarterback does escape,
04:50 it gets taken care of immediately on the sidelines, which sucks that we've had to
04:54 talk about it each and every week for the last five weeks.
04:57 [BLANK_AUDIO]
05:00 >> Okay. >> Thanks, David.
