Omegle, the anonymous chat website popular since 2009, has shut down after a resurgence in 2020 amid the pandemic. Despite efforts to combat misuse, including cases of Pedophilia and explicit content, the lack of effective age verification led to its closure. Omegle's owner cited stress and expense as reasons.

00:00 The internet is a very happening place.
00:04 Over the years, there has been rise and fall of many social media networks like Orkut and
00:10 Club Penguin.
00:11 However, this one has been the most stunning.
00:14 After 14 years of long run, Omegle, the popular chat website where users used to chat anonymously,
00:21 has been shut down.
00:22 Yes, the popular website Omegle has announced the end of all its operations.
00:26 For years, the chat website used to pay random users on platform to have private chats.
00:31 The site made its initial public debut in 2009 and quickly became the go-to destination
00:36 for users looking to communicate with strangers online.
00:40 The platform was designed in such a way to make it easy for users to switch between conversations,
00:45 making it a desirable location for new users to hang out.
00:48 However, just like an explosion, the popularity of the site went silent for a decade.
00:53 But 2020 saw a re-eruption of the website due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
00:58 As many people were stuck in the vicinity of their homes and couldn't talk or meet with
01:02 each other, Omegle became their go-to destination.
01:05 When many YouTubers started to operate on Omegle, the website's popularity skyrocketed.
01:12 However, Omegle's owner, Liv K. Brooves, has since announced that he has decided to end
01:18 the operations because the stress and expense of operating Omegle and fighting the misuse
01:22 are simply too much.
01:24 This online chat service frequently found itself in hot waters when the users began
01:28 to complain about sexism, racism, abuse, and pedophilia.
01:34 Omegle has also witnessed a multi-fold increase in child sex abuse and nudity in recent years.
01:40 As per the reports, there are more than 50 cases of Omegle involving pedophilia in various
01:46 nations, primarily Australia, the US, and the UK.
01:50 This is why TikTok, a platform for short videos which is banned in India, had banned users
01:55 from sharing links to Omegle because of worries about minors engaging in improper behavior
01:59 there.
02:00 In addition, it isn't like social media didn't attempt to tackle the rising issues.
02:05 Omegle made an effort to address the problem by implementing moderate chat rooms, collaborating
02:09 with law enforcement, and raising the minimum age requirement from 13 to 18.
02:14 However, the issue remained because there was no age verification process in place,
02:19 which meant the majority of the users who participated in racism and nude behavior were
02:23 not held responsible at all.
02:25 And so, the owner, Liv K. Bruce, has decided to end the operation once and for all.
02:31 The website is prepared to shut down.
02:34 With the completion of a journey spanning 14 years, another internet legend is now officially
02:39 bidding a fond goodbye to the internet.
