Motor Trend Executive Editor Matt Stone looks at the ConceptFASCINATION from Mercedes-Benz
Transcript
00:00 Mercedes-Benz had a lot going on here at Paris.
00:10 There's the S600 Pullman, which is a big, long, stretched S-Class that reminds you of
00:15 those great Pullman limousines from the 1960s.
00:19 There's the S400 Hybrid, which is Mercedes-Benz's first hybrid automobile that will be introduced
00:26 in the United States market sometime next year.
00:29 It's a V6 with near V8 power and really good fuel economy.
00:33 So Mercedes claims it is the best, most economical, full-size luxury sedan, gasoline-powered,
00:41 that will be on the market.
00:43 But the real news for Mercedes-Benz is its concept car called the Fascination.
00:48 Now, what we see here is a really elegant, two-door, sort of a sport wagon.
00:55 Now, will Mercedes-Benz really come out with a two-door sport wagon?
00:58 Well, I don't think so.
00:59 But I think this car has other purposes.
01:02 Number one, it shows off the new design language of Mercedes-Benz.
01:07 The company has a new design director, and what we're seeing here is the first example
01:11 of their new styling cues.
01:14 Really elegant proportions, nice detailing, interiors that are emblematic of what we will
01:19 see in future Mercedes-Benz interiors.
01:22 But the real story, however, is up at the front of the Fascination.
01:27 If you look at the dual headlight design, the grill shapes, the proportion, what you're
01:32 really going to see is a good look at the new E-Class.
01:36 The new E-Class mid-size Mercedes-Benz, also the replacement for the current CLK Coupe,
01:43 which will be called E-Coupe or E-Coupe, when that new car breaks cover next year.
01:48 But look at this front end, and that's what you're seeing.
01:51 So take a look, future Mercedes-Benz styling just over my right shoulder, and I do think
01:57 it is fascinating.
