00:00 The European Commission sends another shipment of 45 tons of medicines and nutritional packages
00:05 to people in the Gaza Strip.
00:11 Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has resigned over his involvement in a widespread
00:16 corruption probe.
00:20 Germany said it will examine the idea of processing asylum applications abroad as Italy strikes
00:25 a deal with Albania to process its migrants there.
00:33 While waiting for an agreement on some sort of pause in military operations in the Gaza
00:37 Strip, the European Commission is coordinating the shipment of another 45 tons of medicines
00:42 and nutritional packages.
00:46 The cargo transported by an Egyptian plane Tuesday goes from Belgium`s Ostende Airport
00:51 to Al-Arish in Egypt near the Rafah border crossing point into Gaza.
01:09 Although the quantities are only a small fraction of what`s needed for the 2.2 million people
01:14 under siege, food, water and medicine are still allowed into Gaza.
01:19 However, the Israeli government maintains a strict ban on fuel supplies, which is exacerbating
01:23 the humanitarian emergency.
01:27 Fuel is needed in order to power generators, to run hospitals, to run - to operate the
01:32 water pumps and desalination plants, to run bakeries and not least to enable humanitarian
01:39 workers to move around and provide the supplies to people who need it.
01:44 So this is the picture.
01:45 We will continue to work on the improving of access.
01:48 We will continue to impress on all the parties to introduce the necessary arrangements.
01:56 We call it humanitarian windows, pauses or ceasefires.
02:00 On Monday, the U.N. Security Council once again failed to agree on a resolution suspending
02:05 military operations, with the U.S. calling for humanitarian pauses and many others demanding
02:10 a humanitarian ceasefire.
02:14 Until that happens, the U.N. agencies and other humanitarian aid organizations also
02:19 stress the need to open the two border crossings from the Israeli side, because so far help
02:23 has not reached the north of Gaza.
02:28 They need access to humanitarian assistance as much as in the south.
02:31 And with a blockade on fuel, this is a major challenge whether or not the trucks can move
02:37 from the south to the north.
02:39 This is why unhindered, continuous flow of assistance is the most critical here, because
02:43 we`re not talking about just past the border.
02:45 We`re talking all the way through Gaza.
02:48 The flight from Ostend and another that left today from Dubai brings the number of EU humanitarian
02:53 air bridge flights to eight.
02:55 The European Commission says this ends the first phase of help, with the second one starting
03:00 in a few weeks` time.
03:11 Hundreds of people have taken part in a protest outside the Israeli parliament.
03:15 They`re demanding government action to ensure the safe return of the hostages abducted by
03:20 Hamas militants during the October 7th attacks.
03:24 Blame and anger is growing with only five people freed after more than a month after
03:29 the raid.
03:31 The government of Israel, the state of Israel, betrayed my parents, betrayed our communities,
03:40 and betraying those 240.
03:45 Hostage and their families again and again and again with every passing minute that they
03:51 are not back home safe with their families.
03:54 The highest priority is to bring the hostages, no matter what, even if it involves to switch
04:02 to release all prisoners.
04:05 Not only Hamas, Hamas or Palestinian prisoners for exchange of the hostages.
04:12 The plight of the hostages is being felt by many around the world, including in London.
04:19 Military analysts have warned of weeks of grueling house-to-house fighting ahead in
04:23 Gaza.
04:24 The operation to find the hostages is hugely complicated, as it`s believed they`re being
04:29 held inside a network of tunnels spanning hundreds of kilometers.
04:35 In Argentina, almost 50 teddy bears with their eyes and mouths covered were tied to the fence
04:40 surrounding the obelisk of Buenos Aires.
04:43 They represent the 40 or more children among those being held by Hamas.
04:55 Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has resigned over his involvement in a widespread
05:00 corruption probe.
05:02 The public prosecutor`s office announced in a statement on Tuesday that it was investigating
05:07 Costa and several members of his cabinet for alleged crimes of prevarication, active and
05:13 passive corruption and influence peddling.
05:16 "My understanding is that the dignity of the Prime Minister`s functions is not compatible with any suspicion about his integrity, his good conduct and even less with the suspected practice of any criminal act.
05:42 Therefore, in this circumstance, I obviously present my resignation to His Excellency, the
05:50 President of the Republic."
05:53 At least five people have been arrested as part of a police investigation, including
05:58 the infrastructure minister, Joao Galamba, and prime minister`s chief of staff.
06:03 The investigation is looking into alleged irregularities in the handing of lithium and
06:08 hydrogen projects in the country.
06:11 Costa said his conscience was clear and he was fully available to collaborate with the
06:15 justice system.
06:20 Burning the midnight oil in Berlin as Chancellor Scholz met federal and state leaders to discuss
06:25 migration.
06:26 Concessions were made on funding.
06:28 The promise was made to examine if asylum applications could be processed abroad.
06:32 "Our common goal is to push back this irregular migration.
06:39 It is clear that we need better protection of the European external borders and we need
06:44 a solidary distribution in Europe.
06:47 Therefore, it is also necessary that we do everything we can to make it easier for those who cannot stay
06:54 to return as is the case today.
06:56 An indispensable prerequisite for this are migration agreements with the countries of origin,
07:02 with transit countries."
07:04 A done deal in Rome where Italy`s agreed to build two migration processing centers in
07:08 Albania.
07:09 Critics say it amounts to deportation.
07:12 The deal was also slammed by the opposition in Tirana.
07:15 "You have shown your respect for the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
07:22 I have to say that the company of our country is not reliable.
07:29 It is unreliable because Edi Rama is the Italian Prime Minister and he is ready to sign anything."
07:44 As the row played out, another migrant boat ran aground on Lampedusa.
07:48 While in Brussels, the EU has said it`s asked Italy for more details of the deal with Albania.
07:58 This 63-year-old Parkinson`s disease patient has regained the use of his legs thanks to
08:04 the help of a team of Franco-Swiss researchers.
08:09 The successful implantation of electrodes inside his body gives tremendous hope for
08:13 patients who`ve lost their mobility due to the disease.
08:17 "We have put electrodes on the region of the spinal cord that controls the legs.
08:22 We had to position them very precisely to activate each of the muscles of the legs symmetrically.
08:28 We have linked these electrodes to a stimulator, a kind of pacemaker that we can program from
08:35 the outside.
08:36 Everything is under the bridge."
08:37 "Over the last 20 years, we have worked to develop very precise stimulation protocols
08:44 for the spinal cord.
08:46 Could we not apply the same concepts to improve the walking problems due to Parkinson`s disease?
08:52 Finally, we have a spinal cord that is intact and that no longer receives brain information."
08:58 Parkinson`s is a disease which affects more men, unusually people over the age of 50.
09:05 It has an impact on mobility.
09:07 "It makes me autonomous.
09:09 It allows me to go shopping.
09:12 It allows me to go to the store.
09:15 Now, it`s something else.
09:16 I`ve found it normal.
09:17 Now, I`ve gone to Brazil to go for a walk."
09:19 Notes from beyond the grave and never received.
09:25 Two hundred and fifty years after they were written, a batch of letters to French sailors
09:30 have finally been opened and studied.
09:32 The sailors were captured by the British at the height of the Seven Years` War in the
09:35 18th century and held in U.K. prisons.
09:38 Dozens of letters were sent mainly by wives and mothers who didn`t know of their men`s
09:43 fate.
09:44 They languished in the British National Archives until a French professor working at Cambridge
09:48 University discovered them.
09:50 "I immediately understood that these were not official letters from diplomats, aristocrats
09:56 or great bourgeois, but they were letters from ordinary people.
10:00 My heart, my heart rate accelerated.
10:04 I immediately understood that it was a unique object.
10:07 It was really the greatest emotion of a historian to this day."
10:12 The letters gave a fascinating insight into the lives of families during the late 1700s.
10:17 Some expressed love and fidelity to absent husbands and fiancees.
10:21 It`s thought some of the senders died without seeing their loved ones again.
10:27 With their Premier League on beaten streak recently broken, Arsenal are now turning their
10:31 focus to the Champions League as they welcome Sevilla to the Emirates this evening.
10:36 Two weeks after edging out the Europa League champions in Spain, a win could potentially
10:40 guarantee the Gunners a passage to the knockout phase with two games in hand.
10:44 Mikel Arteta`s men are currently top of Group B, but the Arsenal manager will be without
10:49 Thomas Partey and Gabriel Jesus while Martin Odegaard remains doubtful.
10:54 Sevilla will be looking to get back to winning ways after picking up just two points in their
10:58 last three group games.
10:59 However, veteran defender Sergio Ramos is likely to miss out with a muscle injury.
11:04 The Spaniards have so far made a habit of drawing since Diego Alonso was appointed as
11:08 manager and are currently struggling in La Liga as they sit 15th with 11 points from
11:13 11 games.
11:15 In Group B`s other fixture, the surprise package loss will aim to continue their fairy tale
11:20 run in the competition when they lock horns with PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadium.
11:24 Elsewhere FC Copenhagen host Manchester United, while Bayern Munich could book their place
11:29 in the knockout phase with a win over Galatasaray.
11:32 In Group C, Napoli welcome Union Berlin, while Sporting Braga will face a tough trip to the
11:37 Bernabeu to face group leaders Real Madrid.
11:40 And in Group D, Benfica will be hoping to secure their first points when they take on
11:44 Real Sociedad with Inter and Salzburg facing off in the other game.
