Kiambu MP Machua Waithaka is set to table a bill that will see suspects arrested over the theft of Kenya Power and Lightning Company (KPLC) transformers get a hefty bond and be treated like murder suspects.
Transcript
00:00 Today we want to tell Kenya Power, thank you very much for coming back to replace this
00:05 transformer because the people of Riyabai have suffered for the last two weeks.
00:10 They have not had electricity.
00:13 With their patience and with our help from the peers and the Kiambu County Kepa and Lighting
00:23 Company offices we have been able to secure a transformer that is now being replaced and
00:29 from tonight we shall be having the electricity back and things will be back to normal.
00:35 On the same note I would like to say that from Monday we have come together in collaboration
00:43 with Kenya Power to weld all the transformers here in Kiambu sub-county.
00:49 As I speak now the Kenya Power people are doing a stock taking, doing an audit of all
00:56 the transformers so that they can give us where the transformers are so that we can
01:01 start welding coming this Monday and we shall be using the local welders who shall be doing
01:08 that job.
01:09 So I think from Monday the thing of transformers being stolen will be a thing of the past.
01:16 On the same note I would like to say that there have been people who have been arrested
01:22 stealing transformers and I'm looking into bringing in a bill or a motion to say that
01:28 whoever steals a transformer should be put in the same category as a murderer because
01:34 here in Riyabai and in Kiambu and elsewhere there are those patients who are using oxygen
01:41 because they have problems with their lungs and when the oxygen is cut off because there
01:46 is no power that person is likely to die.
01:49 So these people should be put in the same category as murderers.
01:54 So we are looking into that to see how we can bring a bill into parliament so that we
01:59 change the law so that we deter criminals of this nature from putting our people in
02:11 big problems because of just trying to steal a transformer and when they steal a transformer
02:17 they don't even gain that much.
02:18 They just go for the coil and for the oil.
02:21 And so this must stop because we've been having, I've been having sleepless nights because
02:28 the Mwana Inchi and the people who elected me keep calling me and it's their right to
02:33 call me but we have to put measures in place that will arrest this ongoing problem of transformers
02:40 being stolen especially in Kiambu sub-county.
