00:00 Charlie, you gonna let me help you here?
00:02 Welcome to Miss Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most surprising twists in teen cinema canon.
00:09 Obviously, there will be major spoilers ahead.
00:12 So they were watching us.
00:14 This whole time.
00:17 Number 20.
00:18 Eleanor is nosy Nora.
00:20 Do Revenge.
00:21 You are now in Forevermore, the coolest, most mysterious student at Rose Hill Country Day.
00:26 Do Revenge is one of the better teen films to come out over the past five years.
00:31 Its colorful set and costume design make it a treat to watch,
00:34 and Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes hold down the fort as the stars.
00:39 But the most memorable thing about Do Revenge is its jaw-dropping twist.
00:43 Is the cat out of the bag?
00:44 Get out of my house.
00:46 Thought so.
00:47 Halfway through the film, it's revealed that Eleanor isn't who Drea thought she was at all.
00:52 Eleanor is actually Nora, a girl who Drea spread a nasty rumor about when they were younger.
00:58 By helping Drea get revenge, Nora was actually playing the long game,
01:02 and getting her own vengeance from years and years ago.
01:06 You have to admire her patience.
01:08 Drea hadn't changed.
01:09 She was the same mean girl I met when I was 13, and she deserved everything that was coming for her.
01:15 Number 19.
01:17 Costa's Wife.
01:18 The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.
01:20 In the first The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants film,
01:23 Costas was definitely our favorite love interest.
01:26 Lena hit the jackpot with that one,
01:28 but things took a turn for the worse in the series' second installment.
01:32 These past few months, I've just...
01:34 I've missed you.
01:36 Sometime after their breakup,
01:38 Lena's grandfather dies and she has to go back to Greece to attend his funeral.
01:42 There, she sees Costas again, but he's not alone.
01:46 Lena?
01:47 This is Melia?
01:49 Melia?
01:50 My wife.
01:54 Turns out, Costas has gotten married and is expecting a baby with his new wife.
01:59 Talk about shocking news for Lena.
02:01 Luckily, these two make things work in the end,
02:04 but this was definitely a roadblock on their path to love.
02:07 I mean, why can't you just stop thinking about it and follow your heart?
02:10 Because he broke my heart!
02:13 Number 18.
02:14 Snape Loved Lily.
02:16 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
02:18 Take them.
02:19 Take them.
02:22 Severus Snape almost took the secret to the grave.
02:26 Throughout the Harry Potter series, Snape was horrible to Harry.
02:30 We sort of learn why after the revelation that Harry's father used to torment Snape,
02:35 but that doesn't seem like an especially strong argument for his behavior through the series.
02:40 By the end, however, we finally get the full picture.
02:43 Lily.
02:44 After all this time?
02:49 Always.
02:55 After believing that Snape was on the side of the Death Eaters,
02:58 Harry learns that the opposite is true.
03:00 Snape's death brings to light that he was actually in love with Lily,
03:04 and feeling responsible for her death, he devoted his life to Dumbledore and the greater good.
03:09 The subject of Snape's morality was a huge talking point for fans,
03:13 and this was a stunning reveal.
03:15 Number 17.
03:23 Blue's Identity.
03:25 Loved Simon.
03:26 Dating in the online age can be difficult, but you know what makes it more difficult?
03:31 Dealing with blackmail and being in the closet at the same time.
03:35 You're gonna leak my emails? You're gonna post them on Creek Secrets?
03:38 I just think that we're in a position here where we can help each other out as well.
03:42 Loved Simon centers around Simon, a high schooler who is trying to figure out
03:46 the identity of a classmate he's fallen in love with virtually.
03:50 At the end of the movie, Simon agrees to meet with the student nicknamed Blue on the Ferris wheel.
03:55 Can I sit there?
03:56 I was kind of waiting for somebody.
03:58 Yeah, I know.
04:01 It turns out to be Bram, a classmate who Simon already has a bit of a crush on.
04:06 Like Simon, we were given no indication that Bram even liked boys,
04:10 so this was a pretty shocking one all around.
04:12 Are you disappointed that it's me?
04:14 No.
04:18 Number 16.
04:26 Who really gave Micah the STI?
04:29 Easy A.
04:30 When Lisa Kudrow shows up in a movie or television show,
04:33 we're pretty much primed to like her character from the very beginning.
04:37 That's what 10 years playing Phoebe Buffay will do for you.
04:40 But her character in Easy A certainly threw us for a loop.
04:44 No, that's my fault.
04:45 I'm so sorry, Olive. I'm sorry that I messed up.
04:49 She plays Mrs. Griffith, the school guidance counselor.
04:52 When Olive is blamed for giving popular boy Micah an STI,
04:56 she learns that it's really Mrs. Griffith that Micah has been sleeping with.
04:59 So then he's telling everybody that it was you,
05:01 so he has to say because he didn't want me to lose my job,
05:04 and he doesn't want to get in trouble either, so he said it's you.
05:07 I'm sorry.
05:08 For pretty much the entire movie up until this point,
05:11 Mrs. Griffith had been perfectly likable.
05:14 The revelation that she's not only been sleeping with a student,
05:17 but gave him chlamydia is jaw-dropping.
05:19 But I see no other alternative than to just live with the guilt.
05:23 My guilt stems from my indiscretion and yours for lying.
05:27 We made our choices, and we just have to let it ride.
05:30 Number 15.
05:31 Kat's history with Joey.
05:33 10 Things I Hate About You.
05:35 Kat Stratford is one of the most iconic female characters in the teen movie canon.
05:40 She loves cool music, she doesn't suffer fools, and she hates dumb jocks like Joey.
05:45 Your little Rambo look is out, Kat.
05:47 Didn't you read last month's Cosmo?
05:49 Run along.
05:50 Yeah, Joey is obviously insufferable.
05:53 And yet, through most of 10 Things I Hate About You,
05:56 we're left wondering why Kat hates Joey so much.
05:59 You know, beyond hating him for his terrible personality.
06:02 Joey never told you that we went out, did he?
06:04 Yeah, okay.
06:06 And ninth for a month.
06:09 Considering the way Kat avoids Joey like the plague,
06:12 it's shocking for us to find out that they have a romantic past,
06:15 and that Joey pressured her into sleeping with him, only to dump her shortly after.
06:20 That's the reason Kat is so fiercely individualistic.
06:23 She knows the importance of following your own compass.
06:26 After that, I swore I would never do anything just because everyone else was doing it.
06:30 And I haven't since.
06:31 With the exception of Bogie's Party and my stunning digestive pyrotechnics.
06:36 Number 14.
06:38 Bee Sting - My Girl
06:40 We knew he was allergic to everything, but we still weren't ready for this one.
06:45 My Girl is one of the sweetest coming-of-age movies ever made,
06:48 until it becomes one of the saddest.
06:50 It centers around the friendship between Veda and Thomas J,
06:54 a sickly boy without many friends.
06:57 What do you think of me?
06:58 For what?
06:59 Well, if you don't get to marry Mr. Bixler.
07:03 I guess.
07:06 When Veda drops her ring near a beehive, Thomas J goes back to look for it.
07:11 He gets stung by bees, which for anyone might not be a big deal.
07:15 But because of his allergies, Thomas J ends up passing away.
07:19 There were just too many of them.
07:20 [Music]
07:25 The moment is terrifying and shocking for audiences, but none more so than Veda.
07:30 Her reaction is absolutely gut-wrenching.
07:33 Put his glasses on!
07:34 Put on his glasses!
07:36 He was supposed to be an acrobat!
07:40 Number 13.
07:42 The Bus - Mean Girls
07:44 You know, someone getting hit by a bus usually isn't something you're preparing to see
07:48 when you're watching a teen movie.
07:50 Thanks to Mean Girls, however, we'll never be unprepared again.
07:54 Some girls say they saw her head go all the way around, but that's just a rumor.
07:57 Some people swear they saw me push her in front of the bus.
08:00 That was an even worse rumor.
08:02 After one of the most iconic scenes in the 2004 film, when Janice tells Regina,
08:07 along with the whole school that Katie has been lying to Regina about being friends with her,
08:11 Regina runs outside.
08:13 Katie follows and tries to apologize, but Regina is having none of it.
08:17 Do you know what everyone says about you?
08:19 They say that you're a homeschooled jungle freak who's a less hot version of me.
08:24 Yeah!
08:24 Her tirade is interrupted when she is rammed by a big yellow school bus.
08:28 Regina doesn't die, despite Katie's instant reaction,
08:32 but the first time you see it, it's definitely a bit of a jump scare.
08:36 She fractured her spine and she still looks like a rock star.
08:38 Thank you.
08:42 Number 12.
08:44 Keith's Cancer - Keith
08:46 With the way Keith acts during this whole movie,
08:48 the reason had to be something as serious as this.
08:51 It begins as a pretty standard teen romance,
08:54 centering on the relationship between high school students Natalie and Keith.
08:57 So you don't remember?
08:58 What?
08:59 Well, I stood behind you in the sixth grade play.
09:02 You were the princess and I was Russian soldier number three.
09:05 I don't remember that.
09:07 Of course not.
09:08 Princess never remembers the little people.
09:11 The two grow closer and eventually end up striking a romance of sorts,
09:15 but then strange things start happening.
09:17 Like Keith disappearing for days on end and lying about where he lives.
09:21 Where have you been the last two weeks?
09:22 Last two weeks?
09:24 What, do you come here every day?
09:27 There's something wrong with you, isn't there?
09:29 Yeah, yeah there is.
09:31 With me?
09:32 Definitely with you.
09:34 After the two have sex for the first time,
09:37 Keith unceremoniously dumps Natalie, leaving her heartbroken.
09:41 At the end of the film, however, we find out that he's dying of cancer
09:45 and doesn't have much time left.
09:47 Not only does this account for his strange behavior, but it makes us weep.
09:51 I just wanted a little more time.
09:53 So all in all, I'd say you're the worst thing that's ever happened to me.
10:00 Goodbye, partner.
10:03 Number 11.
10:05 Scabbers.
10:06 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
10:09 Never trust a rat.
10:10 He's not really a rat.
10:12 Well, he was a rat.
10:12 He was my brother Percy's rat, but then they gave him an owl.
10:15 Who does we know the truth?
10:17 At the time that the third installment of the Harry Potter franchise came out,
10:21 Ron Weasley's pet rat Scabbers had been a mainstay.
10:24 But then Harry finally comes face to face with Sirius Black,
10:29 the man supposedly responsible for the death of his parents,
10:32 and the truth comes out.
10:34 No, Harry, it wasn't him.
10:35 Somebody did betray your parents, but it was somebody who,
10:38 until quite recently, I believe to be dead.
10:41 Sirius was framed by his old pal, Peter Pettigrew,
10:44 who has since been hiding in his Animagus form.
10:47 A rat.
10:48 That's right.
10:49 He's been hiding in plain sight ever since.
10:52 And there is so much wrong with it.
10:54 He said we take you to the castle.
10:55 After that, the Dementors can have you.
10:58 Number 10.
10:59 It was just a vision.
11:01 The Twilight Saga.
11:02 Breaking Dawn Part II.
11:04 To give them their due, the Twilight movies were faithful adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's books.
11:10 This reminds me.
11:11 Your niece.
11:17 My daughter.
11:21 However, the ending took us all by surprise.
11:24 For the finale of Breaking Dawn, the Cullens prepare to battle the Volturi.
11:28 In the book, Bella saves the day with her protective shield,
11:32 and no one has to fight at all.
11:34 In the movie, the battle goes ahead and beloved characters actually start dying.
11:39 "This can't be happening!" cried the book fans.
11:47 But actually, it wasn't.
11:49 The battle was all a vision designed to persuade the Volturi leader
11:52 that the odds wouldn't be in his favor if he proceeded with his plans.
11:56 A bit of an anticlimax?
11:58 Maybe.
11:59 But also a clever way to inject some action
12:01 without depriving the fans of their happy ending.
12:04 "Nobody's ever loved anybody as much as I love you."
12:06 "There's one exception."
12:10 Number 9.
12:19 The Men Behind the Mask.
12:21 Scream.
12:21 Although you might not remember Who's Who from the original Scream movie,
12:25 the infamous ghost-face mask is still a common sight on Halloween night.
12:30 The film parodies the slasher genre while giving the audience genuine scares.
12:34 "Is that you, Randy?"
12:35 "Cute."
12:38 "In what movie is this from? I spit on your garage."
12:41 One of the most frightening moments is the shocking revelation of the killer's true identity.
12:46 There's no dramatic removal of the mask.
12:49 No.
12:50 Instead, the truth dawns on Sydney while she's standing right in front of him.
12:54 It's her boyfriend Billy Loomis alongside his best friend Stu.
12:58 "Help me, please."
12:59 "Surprise, Sydney."
13:04 The killer's ability to be in two places at once completely threw us off their sense.
13:10 "Several more local teens are dead,
13:12 bringing to an end the harrowing mystery of the mass killings that has terrified the peaceful community."
13:17 Number 8.
13:18 Jace and Clary Find Out Their Siblings.
13:21 Though they aren't, really.
13:23 The Mortal Instruments City of Bones.
13:25 The first novel in Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series was adapted into a 2013 movie
13:31 with hope that sequels would follow.
13:33 But we never did get that second installment.
13:36 "I'm sorry, we didn't have a choice. I mean, we had to save Simon and Jace."
13:39 "Jace thinks he needs to save the world.
13:41 But you don't need to encourage him to do it."
13:45 This meant that moviegoers never got an answer to the crucial question.
13:49 Were Jace and Clary really brother and sister?
13:52 They begin the story as your typical love interests.
13:55 They flirt, they kiss, they fall in love.
13:58 And then they find out they have the same dad?
14:00 "Finally.
14:00 Both my children together.
14:04 My daughter.
14:06 And my son.
14:08 So sorry, Clary."
14:12 What is the audience supposed to do with that information?
14:15 We can't unsee the kissing.
14:16 So we can't understand the couple's decision to totally ignore their new knowledge
14:20 and ride off into the sunset together.
14:22 "Look, Clary, I don't believe it.
14:24 It doesn't feel like the truth, not in my heart."
14:26 "I just don't know how to look at the world anymore."
14:30 At least the book fans knew the truth.
14:32 Number 7.
14:34 Prim Doesn't Make It.
14:35 The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2.
14:38 The Hunger Games began with Katniss's sacrifice, entering the games to save her sister.
14:43 "I volunteer! I volunteer!
14:45 I volunteer as tribute!"
14:48 But while she was away, Prim grew up.
14:51 She was no longer the helpless child who would be kept safe at home.
14:55 "You understand that whatever I do comes back to you and mom.
14:58 I don't want you to get hurt."
15:00 "You don't have to protect me.
15:03 Or mom."
15:05 In fact, she became a trained medic and ended up on the front lines at the capital
15:10 when two bombs were dropped by the rebels.
15:12 The first incited the medics to help the injured.
15:15 The second wreaked further devastation, but essentially ended the war.
15:19 Prim was unfortunately caught in the calamity of the second bomb.
15:23 "Prim! Prim Rose! Prim! Prim!"
15:28 The distress of losing her right at the end was a devastating blow for Katniss and the viewers.
15:34 It came as a shock and put a damper on the otherwise happy ending.
15:38 Number 6.
15:39 Jamie Tells Landon Her Secret.
15:41 A Walk to Remember.
15:43 In the grand tradition of Nicholas Sparks' adaptations,
15:46 A Walk to Remember begins as a love story.
15:49 But tragedy is just around the corner.
15:52 When bad boy Landon Carter is forced to participate in the school play as punishment,
15:56 he forges a friendship with Jamie Sullivan.
15:59 "Are you sure you're okay?"
15:59 "Mm-hmm. I'm fine. Thank you for everything."
16:06 Jamie is the minister's daughter and a social misfit,
16:09 but she makes Landon promise he won't fall in love with her.
16:12 Naturally, he does fall for her, and it's only then he discovers the reason for her request.
16:18 Jamie has leukemia and has stopped responding to treatment.
16:21 "The doctor said I should go on and live life normally as best I could.
16:26 I don't want anybody to be weird around me."
16:29 "Including me?"
16:30 "Especially you!"
16:32 It's a real gut punch for the audience.
16:34 Just like Landon, we're about to have our happy ending cruelly snatched away.
16:39 "You're my angel."
16:40 "I love you."
16:48 Number 5. Aunt Helen - The Perks of Being a Wallflower
16:52 Movies aimed at teenagers have a reputation for being trivial,
16:56 but they often tackle serious issues.
16:58 The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming-of-age drama about friendship,
17:02 but it also includes themes of mental illness, post-traumatic stress, and abuse.
17:07 "We accept the love we think we deserve."
17:09 "Can we make them know that they deserve more?"
17:13 Charlie, portrayed by Logan Lerman, is a shy freshman who struggles with bouts of depression.
17:18 We are told that his Aunt Helen died in a car crash, but at the end of the movie,
17:23 we discover that her death has had more of an effect on him than we formally realized.
17:27 Charlie was sexually abused by Helen and has repressed the memories.
17:32 "It'll be our little secret, okay?"
17:34 The revelation is appalling, but not gratuitous.
17:37 Once we know the truth, everything makes more sense.
17:41 "I can see it.
17:42 This one moment when you know you're not a sad story.
17:46 You are alive."
17:48 Number 4. Maddie's Not Really Sick - Everything, Everything
17:53 Everything, Everything is a teen movie based on the book by Nicola Yoon.
17:57 It follows Maddie, an 18-year-old who never leaves the house due to an
18:01 immunity disorder known as SCID. Her mother insists that she stay inside and doesn't mix
18:06 with people, purely for her own safety. "You didn't have to take the day off."
18:10 "I always take the day off. What do you want to do today?"
18:14 "Same thing we always do."
18:17 But when Maddie starts to fall for the boy next door,
18:19 it becomes more difficult to follow her mom's wishes.
18:22 "I don't want to lose you."
18:23 "I can't even go outside. What are you really losing?"
18:28 As it turns out, however, she could have broken the rules a long time ago.
18:33 At the end of the movie, it is revealed that Maddie isn't sick at all.
18:36 Her mom has Moonchazin by proxy. "Where are the papers, mom?
18:40 What are you talking about?
18:43 You have records for everything, but you have nothing about SCID."
18:50 Maddie's only problems are caused by staying inside too much and being overmedicated.
18:55 Number 3. The Date on the Board - Remember Me
18:59 Remember Me is a gentle love story, a coming-of-age tale, and a family drama about grief.
19:05 "You couldn't wait a time?" "I could have."
19:09 It also has one of the most intense endings ever committed to film.
19:14 Viewers may have wondered why the movie appeared to be set in the recent past
19:18 rather than the present. That was revealed in the final scenes.
19:21 Tyler, played by Robert Pattinson, waits for his father in his office
19:25 after mending their rocky relationship. Meanwhile, Tyler's sister Caroline is in
19:30 a classroom where we catch the sight of the date on the blackboard. It's September 11, 2001.
19:37 "Caroline. Hello."
19:49 The camera then pans out from Pattinson, and we realize that he's in the World Trade Center.
19:54 If the filmmakers were going for shock value, they definitely achieved it.
19:58 "Whatever you do in life will be insignificant,
20:02 but it's very important that you do it."
20:07 Number 2. Augustus' Diagnosis - The Fault in Our Stars
20:12 Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace Lancaster meet at a cancer support group.
20:17 "What?" "I didn't say anything."
20:19 "Why are you looking at me like that?" "Because you're beautiful."
20:22 She's getting worse. He's in remission. This is Hazel's story, and Augustus is cast as the
20:29 eccentric but charming love interest who will help her experience life before she has to face her death.
20:35 "Okay?" "Okay."
20:37 This is what we expected from the premise of The Fault in Our Stars.
20:43 What we didn't bank on was the return of Gus' condition.
20:46 We knew we were getting a tragedy, but we weren't expecting Gus' death.
20:51 The moment where Augustus tells Hazel the truth is made all the more heartbreaking
20:55 by two incredible acting turns from Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.
21:00 "Hey, listen. Don't you worry about me, Hazel Grace, okay?
21:04 I'm gonna find a way to hang around here and annoy you for a long time."

21:24 Number 1. The Maze is an Experiment - The Maze Runner
21:30 The Maze Runner might not be the most memorable movie from the teen dystopia craze,
21:34 but it does have the most dramatic final reveal. At the beginning of the movie,
21:39 a boy named Thomas finds himself dropped into the world of the maze.
21:43 "You only have three rules. First, do your part. No time for any freeloaders."
21:51 He and the other "gladers" work together to defeat the trials thrown at them.
21:56 In a final shocking twist, we discover that the teens are part of an experiment.
22:01 A deadly virus has devastated the planet, and they are essentially lab rats.
22:06 "Hello. My name is Dr. Ava Page. I'm Director of Operations of the World
22:12 Catastrophe Kill Zone Department." The maze is designed to test the subject's
22:16 strength and provide humanity with hope for a cure. It's an intriguing reveal,
22:21 and sets us up for the sequel. "So let's move forward.
22:24 It's time now to begin phase two." Which moment caught you completely off guard?
22:33 Let us know in the comments below. "I wanted to let you make up your own mind about him."
