00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're looking at small details, easter eggs, and characters
00:06 that only true fans of the Five Nights at Freddy's games will pick up on in this 2023
00:12 film.
00:13 Some major spoilers if you haven't seen the movie yet.
00:17 Have you met them yet?
00:21 Met who?
00:22 6 AM.
00:23 The film stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, who was introduced in the first game, although
00:39 his background is largely changed here.
00:43 Like his game counterpart, however, the movie version of Mike is well acquainted with 6
00:49 AM.
00:50 The alarm clock goes off at 6 as he prepares for another day as a mall security guard.
00:55 Upon losing that gig, Mike starts working nights at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.
01:01 In the games, the player's main goal is to survive a night with roaming killer robots
01:06 until they can clock out at 6 AM.
01:09 This is also when Mike's shift ends in the movie.
01:13 Since Mike has a tendency to fall asleep at the monitors, 6 AM remains his wake-up call
01:18 time as well.
01:29 Celebrating the Environment
01:43 The production design team captures the atmosphere of the games with little touches sprinkled
01:48 throughout the rustic pizzeria and arcade.
01:52 There are nods to the Pirate Cove area, air vents large enough to fit a person inside,
01:57 and a prize section adorned with familiar Halloween masks.
02:01 At one point, "It's me" can be read on a mirror, alluding to one of the most haunting
02:07 messages from the early games.
02:09 Mike's security office also remains faithful to the games with retro monitors and a striped
02:15 cup.
02:16 The background detail that made us rejoice the most would have to be the inclusion of
02:21 the "Celebrate" poster.
02:22 We're just bummed that Mike didn't approach the poster and honk Freddy's nose.
02:28 That sound effect was sorely missed.
02:39 Chica's Magic Rainbow
02:41 Before losing his first security job, Mike stops for ice cream at the mall.
02:47 Fans will recognize the ice cream parlor's mascot as Chica's Magic Rainbow.
02:51 This grinning rainbow is among the most memorable antagonists from the role-playing spin-off
02:56 game Five Nights at Freddy's World.
02:59 Despite her cheerful aesthetic, this rainbow is more like a storm cloud, functioning as
03:04 the 1.20 update's final boss.
03:08 You can count on the Chica's Magic Rainbowland minigame raining on your parade with its high
03:13 difficulty.
03:15 Although the rainbow is the only Easter egg here, its misleading appearance does serve
03:20 as an omen for Mike.
03:22 One minute, he's getting an ice cream treat.
03:25 The next, he's getting fired.
03:27 Likewise, a rainbow always seems inviting until its true colors are revealed.
03:33 Circus Baby
03:34 During the climax, Abby is nearly forced into a springlock suit with pigtails and red cheeks.
03:53 The suit resembles Circus Baby, who made her debut in Five Nights at Freddy's' sister
03:59 location.
04:00 Headlining Circus Baby's Pizza World, this singing clown is possessed by Elizabeth Afton,
04:07 William Afton's daughter.
04:08 Again, the movie twists the lore around.
04:11 It's revealed that William Afton's daughter is not only alive, but she's Vanessa, the
04:17 cop who tries to help Mike and Abby.
04:20 When we last see Vanessa, she's in a coma following a confrontation with her murderous
04:25 father.
04:26 If the film gets a sequel, maybe Vanessa's soul will be transferred into Circus Baby.
04:31 If that does happen, it's going to make that romantic tension between Mike and Vanessa
04:37 pretty awkward.
04:43 Carl killed by cupcake
04:53 To get Mike fired, his greedy aunt sends a gang to ransack Freddy's.
04:58 Among the intruders is a guy named Carl, who wears a shirt referencing the minigame Midnight
05:04 Motorist.
05:05 Carl signs up for more than what he bargained for as a cupcake animatronic turns the table
05:11 and takes a bite out of him.
05:13 The cupcake isn't given a proper name in the film.
05:17 In the games, he didn't really have an official name at first.
05:20 For a while, he was generally known as the Cupcake or Mr. Cupcake.
05:25 However, the fans granted him another alias, Carl, which some consider to be his canonical
05:32 name.
05:33 The movie is clearly aware of this, pitting Carl against Carl.
05:37 Our money was always on the cupcake.
05:46 Dream Theory
05:59 Haunted by the disappearance of his brother Garrett, Mike believes that he can delve deeper
06:04 into his memories through his dreams.
06:07 Toward the beginning of the film, he tries to expand his mind by reading a book called
06:12 Dream Theory.
06:13 This ties into one of the most hotly debated theories among the Five Nights community.
06:18 In a nutshell, the theory suggests that the whole series is a dream within the mind of
06:23 the crying child from Five Nights at Freddy's 4.
06:27 Supporters of this theory often point to Toy Chica's missing beak in the game as evidence.
06:33 The movie's Easter egg might not canonize the Dream Theory, but it goes to show that
06:37 Scott Cawthon and company are paying attention to the online discourse.
06:50 Sparky's
06:51 Any Five Nights fan will recognize Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and that cupcake.
06:58 You're definitely a diehard if you spent hours obsessing over Sparky the dog, though.
07:04 An urban legend, this one-armed canine was rumored to be the secret sixth animatronic.
07:10 Images even surfaced online, but these were soon exposed as a hoax.
07:15 The movie makes Sparky a reality, kind of.
07:19 Plotting against Mike, Aunt Jane and her minions meet at a diner called Sparky's.
07:33 And yes, we'll talk about THAT cameo in time.
07:40 Even more significant, the restaurant houses a broken-down dog animatronic that appears
07:45 to be Sparky.
07:47 We don't get to see the suit in action, but every dog has its day.
07:51 Perhaps Sparky will finally get his in the sequel.
07:55 Balloon Boy
08:09 Not to be confused with that 2009 fiasco in Fort Collins, Balloon Boy has become a fan-favorite
08:15 Five Nights character.
08:17 Introduced in the second game, this animatronic stands out with his propeller cap and signature
08:23 striped balloon.
08:25 In the film, he offers a mix of jump scares and jump laughs, which fans have come to expect.
08:31 The little guy startles Mike when he opens his locker in search of his security uniform.
08:36 Balloon Boy doesn't attack Mike during his five nights at Freddy's.
08:41 However, the smiling animatronic pops up again in the mid-credits scene.
08:46 He confronts the cab driver, who we'll also talk about more later.
08:50 For now, we're wondering if Balloon Boy attacked the driver, or if he was just hitching a ride.
09:08 Springtrap always comes back.
09:21 We guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that the same actor who played Stu Macker
09:25 turns out to be William Afton, the owner of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.
09:30 Initially presenting himself as Mike's career counselor, Afton reveals his true nature in
09:36 the climax.
09:37 Wearing a horrifying bunny suit, fans will recognize the yellow critter as Spring Bonnie.
09:44 By the time Freddy and his friends are done with Afton, though, he looks a lot more like
09:49 the decrepit Springtrap, who rises up as the third game's main villain.
09:54 The bunny might lose this round, but as any fan will tell you, Afton always comes back.
10:05 And since this is Matthew Lillard, we feel compelled to play this clip as well.
10:18 YouTuber cameos
10:29 It's safe to say that Five Nights at Freddy's wouldn't have become a gaming phenomenon if
10:34 it weren't for Let's Play videos spreading the word.
10:37 It's only appropriate that the movie would pay it forward by granting cameos to several
10:42 YouTubers.
10:43 On the Employee of the Month board, photos of 8-Bit Ryan, Baz, Docko, Fusion Z Gamer,
10:50 and Razbowski can be spotted.
10:53 At Sparky's Diner, the waiter is none other than Matthew Patrick, or MatPat.
10:59 Meanwhile, the cab driver is played by Corey Williams, aka Corey X Kenshin, whose channel
11:05 took off after he started playing bone-chilling games like Bloodborne and Freddy's.
11:11 Our only quibble is that Mark Fischbach, aka Markiplier, is seemingly nowhere to be found.
11:18 Hopefully, he at least makes a reaction video to this movie.
