Leonardo Olmos left the track and stopped his Chevrolet #4 in the green on a run-off area, during the second lap of the A Class final race. Located in a dangerous place, the car was reached by a rescue truck in a matter of seconds. Marshals had not yet started waving the yellow flag, to neutralize the race.

Carlos Ortega was one of the three track officials who got out of the truck to attend Olmos' car, just in the moment in which another competitor, Mauricio Giovanetti lost control of his Chevrolet #11. The car left the track at an estimate speed of 180 km/h (112 mi/h), went into a spin and got sideways, directly into the rescue vehicle, ramming Carlos Ortega who was thrown high up in the air before hitting the ground. The other two track officials involved in the crash, escaped injuries and rushed to help their colleague.
