00:00 Michael Myers is the embodiment of evil. Freddy Krueger is a vengeful dream demon.
00:05 Jason Voorhees kills at the behest of his mother. But why are the animatronics
00:10 so hell-bent on killing people in Five Nights at Freddy's?
00:13 "Tell me how to stop this."
00:15 Warning, spoilers ahead. Five Nights at Freddy's is a horror franchise spawned
00:20 off of the popular video game series from Scott Cawthon, now entering the
00:24 world of live-action adaptation with a feature film from Blumhouse Productions
00:28 and Universal Pictures. FNAF boasts a fandom that rivals any of the icons of
00:33 horrors yesteryear and contains sprawling lore that stretches across 13
00:37 games and more than 30 books. For those not in the know, Five Nights at Freddy's
00:41 is known as that game where Chuck E. Cheese-like animatronics come to life
00:45 and kill you. But few outside of the fandom actually understand how or why
00:49 these events are taking place. Fortunately, the games and film
00:53 adaptation have two similar yet extremely different approaches to
00:56 explaining the mysteries of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. This means that even the
01:00 most diehard fan is in for a surprise with a new film, and those coming to the
01:04 franchise for the first time through the movie won't be able to predict how the
01:08 games play out if they so choose to play afterward. The first Five Nights at
01:12 Freddy's game features security guard Mike Schmidt listening to a series of
01:15 messages from his predecessor and the mysterious phone guy. At first, it sounds
01:20 like the animatronics are free-roaming at night because their servo motors lock
01:24 up if they are left off for too long. He's warned that if an animatronic comes
01:27 across him after hours, it will shove him into one of the mechanical suits, which
01:32 will kill him since the suits aren't meant for humans to fit inside. This is
01:36 because the animatronics are programmed to outfit any "naked exoskeletons" and
01:40 confuse them with humans. They're not capable of being evil, just operating as
01:45 scheduled. Fans of the game know the truth. In actuality, the animatronics are
01:50 running on the souls and corpses of dead children, victims of the serial killer
01:54 and Fazbear Entertainment co-founder William Afton. "There are ghost children
01:59 possessing giant robots? Thanks for the heads up." These spirits are looking for
02:03 payback and taking out their frustrations on any human they encounter,
02:07 believing them to be the person responsible for their pain. The last
02:11 thing the children saw of the purple guy, aka Afton, is a badge, one that
02:16 resembles the one the security guards now wear. This is just the lore of the
02:20 early games, and there are different reasons behind the animatronics movement
02:24 in later games, including overridden code, faulty software, and even a child's
02:28 nightmare playing out before the player's eyes. In the later FNAF games,
02:32 the lore introduces something called "Remnant", a metallic substance used to
02:36 trap souls in inanimate objects. In the books, it's the name of the endoskeleton
02:41 metal used to make the animatronics. Afton believed if he killed enough
02:45 children and captured enough of the remnant that made the animatronics come
02:48 to life, he could make himself immortal. Throughout the film, an animatronic that
02:52 resembles a small girl is shown, with a retractable claw chest that snaps down
02:57 almost like a bear trap. This is Circus Baby, the main star of Circus Baby's
03:02 Pizza World, aka the sister location of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. As police officer
03:07 Vanessa tells Mike Schmidt, "They want to make her like them." If Abby's soul and
03:13 corpse were to reside within the Circus Baby chassis, she would be able to join
03:16 the rest of Afton's victims inside Freddy, Bonnie, Foxy, Chica, and Golden
03:21 Freddy. They like playing with her, and view this as the way to be able to play
03:25 with her forever. Their intentions, while sweet, are incredibly misguided. However,
03:30 it's when William Afton, from within the Spring Bonnie suit, starts ordering them
03:34 around that the violence truly escalates. These children have been inside the suits
03:38 for so long that they don't realize the yellow bunny is actually the source of
03:42 their pain. Afton used the Spring Bonnie suit to lure them near, only to kill them
03:47 and shove their bodies within the suits. Sadly, they've forgotten this, and instead
03:51 see him as a leader. They're not evil, they're just listening to his commands.
03:55 It's only when Abby draws a picture to remind them that Afton is not only in
04:00 the Spring Bonnie suit, but is the reason that they're all inside the
04:03 animatronics in the first place, that they're finally able to break free, turn
04:07 on Afton, and finally kill him once and for all. The film ends with Afton inside
04:12 the suit, transforming from Spring Bonnie into the villainous Springtrap. If
04:16 Blumhouse and Universal are smart, they'll immediately greenlight production
04:20 on the sequel, and bring Springtrap back for round two.
