00:00Parker, you are such a boy scout. When are you going to give a guy a break?
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for
00:08formerly hated movies that are slowly getting more positive reactions.
00:13Why do I get the feeling you're going to be the death of me?
00:18Number 10. Miami Vice.
00:20Why do I get the feeling everybody knows we're here 15 blocks out?
00:24Because everybody knows we're here 15 blocks out.
00:27Michael Mann went back to his roots when he adapted a film version of his popular 80s
00:32crime show, Miami Vice, updating the sleek and sexy aesthetic of the mid-thousands.
00:38Using the digital photography Mann was becoming known for,
00:42the film version polarized critics and didn't fare much better at the box office.
00:46Things go wrong, the odds catch up.
00:57Probability is like gravity.
01:00While many described it as style over substance and overly somber at the time,
01:05in the decade and a half that followed, a new generation of critics and moviegoers
01:10began to look at it through a different lens.
01:12Not having grown up with the original, and in an age where digital has become standard,
01:17they were able to look at it on its own merits, praising the cinematography and brooding tone.
01:22Why is this happening to me?
01:25Because you lead a life of crime.
01:27Can't do time, don't mess with crime.
01:29Number 9.
01:30Marie Antoinette
01:31When Sofia Coppola's historical drama about the infamous French queen premiered at the
01:36Cannes Film Festival, it divided viewers, with some even booing the film.
01:41Many felt that it was nothing more than some pretty costume porn,
01:45and a shallow and inaccurate biopic.
01:48Indeed, the movie's portrayal of Marie is more like a modern American teen
01:53than an accurate portrayal of her life in France in the 1700s.
01:57Don't they ever get tired of these ridiculous stories?
01:59While the anachronistic music and even a shot of a pair of converse shoes drew
02:04ire from many historians, many have come to realize over time that that was exactly the point.
02:11While seen as a step down at the time, Marie Antoinette is now viewed by many
02:16as an essential piece of Coppola's filmography.
02:19You are not what was desired, but you are no less dear to me.
02:23Number 8.
02:25Jennifer's Body
02:26Jennifer's evil.
02:28I know.
02:30No, I mean she's actually evil.
02:32Not high school evil.
02:33Initially marketed as a sexy thriller aimed at teen boys,
02:37heavily promoting kissing scenes between Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox,
02:42Jennifer's Body was met with negative reviews and lackluster box office results.
02:46Writer Diablo Cody took issue with the studio's marketing strategy,
02:50feeling that it was missing the intended demographic, young women.
02:54You were never a good friend.
02:56Even when we were little, you used to steal my toys and pour lemonade on my bed.
03:00And now I'm eating your boyfriend.
03:03See?
03:04At least I'm consistent.
03:06Over the years, the intended audience eventually came to discover the film
03:10and identify with its themes, particularly in regard to women's bodies and autonomy
03:15in the wake of the hashtag MeToo movements.
03:18Today, the film is regarded by many as a feminist horror masterpiece
03:22and a seminal bisexual text.
03:24What do you want from me?
03:26I just want to explain some things to you.
03:30Besides, best friends don't keep secrets, right?
03:34Number 7.
03:35Speed Racer
03:36Racing's in our blood.
03:39But for pops, it isn't just a sport.
03:44It's way more important than that.
03:47It's like a religion.
03:49Following the success of the Matrix trilogy, the Wachowskis had a blank check.
03:54They chose to direct a film adaptation of the classic anime Speed Racer.
03:59They delivered one of the boldest, most colorful and earnest films of the century.
04:03But upon release, it was torn apart,
04:06losing millions and receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews.
04:10You think you can drive a car and change the world?
04:13It doesn't work like that.
04:16Maybe not.
04:18But it's the only thing I know how to do when I gotta do something.
04:21While their next project fared somewhat better critically,
04:24the equally ambitious follow-up, Cloud Atlas, was also a box office bomb.
04:29However, both films developed a small yet loyal following online,
04:33with people beginning to sing their praises.
04:36Today, both have been reappraised with Speed Racer, in particular,
04:40being hailed in critical pieces, questioning if we got it wrong upon release.
04:45He's going to be very good.
04:49No, he's going to be the best.
04:53If they don't destroy him first.
04:55Number 6.
04:57Alien 3
04:58A sequel to two of the most beloved and popular sci-fi films of all time,
05:02there were a lot of expectations heaped onto the third Alien film from the start.
05:07You've been in my life so long.
05:10I can't remember anything else.
05:12A legendarily troubled production that dragged on for years,
05:15with multiple scripts written and thrown out.
05:18Filming began before the final script was even complete.
05:22Studio meddling left the film with plots that went nowhere and an inconsistent tone,
05:27and led first-time director David Fincher to disown the movie.
05:30What makes you think they're going to care about a bunch of lifers
05:33who found God at the ass-end of space?
05:35You really think they're going to let you interfere with their plans for this thing?
05:40Years later, however, a cut of the film was released
05:43intended to be closer to Fincher's version.
05:46The assembly cut has been praised by many for being the version we should have seen in 1992.
05:51I could be reworked, but I'll never be top of the line again.
05:55Number 5.
05:56Man of Steel
05:58Attempting to copy the success of their rival Marvel,
06:01DC kicked off their cinematic universe with a film centered around their most famous character,
06:06Superman.
06:07What's the S stand for?
06:11It's not an S.
06:13The film from Zack Snyder drew its fair share of complaints,
06:16including a third act that destroyed much of Metropolis,
06:19and the infamous scene where Pa Kent lets himself be sucked into a tornado.
06:24But now, after the DCEU's slow, inevitable death,
06:28and the travesty that was Joss Whedon's Justice League,
06:32Man of Steel looks pretty good by comparison.
06:36They will join you in the sun, Cal.
06:40In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.
06:47And while people are certainly excited for the next iteration of Superman,
06:50Henry Cavill excelled in the role.
06:53Knowing that this was Cavill's only solo Superman film,
06:56we can't help but embrace Man of Steel in retrospect.
07:00Welcome to the planet.
07:05I'm glad to be here, Lewis.
07:07Number 4.
07:08The Village
07:09M. Night Shyamalan has had quite the journey in Hollywood,
07:13going from the golden child, to filmmaking pariah,
07:16to a bit of a self-financed indie darling.
07:20How is it you are brave when all the rest of us shake in our boots?
07:26Better not worry about what will happen.
07:29Only what needs to be done.
07:31The Village came out right as he was transitioning
07:34from that first part of his career to the second.
07:37His reputation, which had been unimpeachable after the success of The Sixth Sense,
07:41was beginning a downward spiral.
07:43What a deeply scandalous thing to say.
07:45I insist you take that back.
07:46The Village began a streak of five films that critics and audiences hated,
07:51with many saying he had become overly reliant on twist endings.
07:55However, recently, he began betting on himself,
07:58self-financing his projects and rehabilitating his image as a writer-director.
08:03They will see I am pure of intention and not afraid.
08:07The end.
08:08Upon re-examination, The Village might have more in common with Unbreakable
08:13than The Last Airbender.
08:15Number 3.
08:16Spider-Man 3
08:17Sam Raimi returned to direct a third film in the Spider-Man trilogy
08:21after astounding audiences with the first two entries.
08:24Who is it that breaks your fall, puts out the flames and saves your children?
08:32They love me.
08:33Spider-Man 3 was immediately a huge success at the box office,
08:38but reactions to the film, particularly online, were decidedly more negative.
08:43Fans pointed to the overstuffed plot and miscasting of Venom as major drawbacks,
08:48citing studio interference.
08:50Raimi would ultimately drop out of a planned fourth film,
08:54leading to a reboot.
08:55I can't do this.
08:58It's over.
08:59No, please.
09:01Please don't say that.
09:04I know I've been selfish, but I can do better.
09:07I can change.
09:07It's not that simple.
09:08Those films, in many ways, felt the studio interference and overstuffed nature even more strongly.
09:14With the benefit of hindsight, some began to re-examine Raimi's third Spidey film.
09:19Although its problems still existed,
09:21other elements, like the tragic story of the Sandman and its bittersweet ending,
09:26began to receive overdue acclaim.
09:28Whatever comes our way,
09:31whatever battle we have raging inside us, we always have a choice.
09:37My friend Harry taught me that.
09:40He chose to be the best of himself.
09:42Number 2.
09:44Twilight
09:44The film adaptation of the best-selling book aimed primarily at teen girls
09:49was also aimed predictably at teen girls.
09:52That target audience loved the adaptation,
09:55filled with gloomy Washington State skies and just as gloomy characters.
09:59How old are you?
10:0217.
10:06How long have you been 17?
10:12A while.
10:13Those outside of that demographic weren't as enthusiastic,
10:16often befuddled or downright dismissive of the film and why anyone would enjoy it.
10:22Today, even some of the film's biggest detractors have realized it just wasn't for them.
10:27This is incredible.
10:32It's so light and open, you know?
10:36What did you expect?
10:38Coffins and dungeons and moats?
10:40Twilight may not have appealed to critics' tastes,
10:43but it did exactly what it set out to do with its campy performances,
10:48cheesy dialogue and sparkling vampires.
10:51Even well over a decade after its release,
10:53it appeals to new generations of its core demographic of young women.
10:58I don't have the strength to stay away from you anymore.
11:07Then don't.

11:25The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
11:27After waiting for decades, those that had grown up with the original trilogy of Star Wars
11:32would finally get a chance to see a new film in their favorite franchise.
11:36Are you sure about this?
11:38Trusting our fate to a boy we hardly know?
11:41The Queen will not approve.
11:43The Queen doesn't need to know.
11:44Hype was so huge that people bought tickets to Meet Joe Black
11:48just to watch the trailer for The Phantom Menace.
11:51However, they weren't happy with the final product
11:54and cries that George Lucas had killed their childhood were frequent.
11:58You turned her against me.
12:02You have done that yourself.
12:04The second and third films faced the same backlash.
12:07While the adults decried Jar Jar Binks and the like for a generation of children,
12:12this was their introduction to Star Wars.
12:14Those children are now adults holding the same nostalgia for those movies
12:19as their parents did for the originals.
12:22Truly wonderful the mind of a child is.
