00:06 elections, as there is growing support from Malay voters, says an analyst.

00:12 Chin Hee Man, who heads the Tan Cheng Lok Centre for Social and Policy Studies at University

00:17 Tungkul Abro Rangman, said the results of the 15th General Election last November showed

00:22 the party gaining ground on Parisan National.

00:26 He said the seats won by BN in Malay-majority areas dropped compared with previous elections,

00:32 and that Perikatan National managed to make inroads largely due to past supporters.

00:38 Chin said that the racial composition of the states could lead to a near-term victory,

00:43 with any support from non-Malay voters strengthening their position.

00:47 However, he also mentioned that if they pursued the hard way without non-Malay support, it

00:53 would risk polarising voters, which would be unhealthy even if they win.

00:58 He said PAS still needed to prove it has the potential to credibly manage the economy in

01:03 order to convince fence-sitters such as disillusioned UMNO supporters.

01:08 Meanwhile, Awang Azman Pawi from University Malaya acknowledged PAS' progress in the states,

01:14 but did not expect their ambitions to be met in the short term.

01:18 He attributed this to PAS' past treatment of non-Malays as punching bags, making it

01:24 challenging to regain their support.
