Víctor Jiménez's Fatal Crash @ Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez 2014

A fatal accident tarnished the Gran Premio STAMP, held on Saturday, 15 February 2014 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Mexico City. The event was the first round of the "Campeonato Mexicano Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez", also known as Copa Ficrea Servicios Financieros, which programme featured the Súper Turismos, Súper Turismos Light and Copa TC2000 races.

On third lap of the Súper Turismos race, a competing car's engine blew up and dumped oil on the track at the exit of the banked Peraltada right-hander. The next cars managed to avoid the oil on the track just in front of the pitlane entrance. Then came the BMW #35 of Víctor Jiménez closely followed by Luis Peralta's Honda #99, biting his tail. Trying to make a pass in the turn, Peralta hooked the right rear flank and wheel of Jiménez's car with his left front. Just passing on the oil patch, the BMW veered to the left and hit violently the outside wall at an unreduced speed.

The impact badly damaged the car and Víctor Jiménez sustained serious injuries. Minutes later the emergency crews reached the unfortunate driver who was taken to the Hospital Metropolitano in Mexico City, where he passed away several hours after admission.

A veteran racer, Víctor Jiménez was at the wheel of the BMW which he shared with his son, Jorge Jiménez , Jr. The car was entered in the ST1 class by team Technomotors.

After the accident, the event was not stopped, and Roberto Fernández in another BMW eventually was the winner. Luis Peralta finished in 4th place. When the news of Jiménez’s death reached the circuit, the members of the Mexican Súper Turismos community were deeply shocked, and the organizers decided to cancel the last two races of the day.
