00:00 It is time to talk movies with our favorite movie critic.
00:04 That's Vicki Rojas, the flick chick, Red Vine reviewer.
00:07 Let's really quick remind people
00:09 why they call you the Red Vine reviewer.
00:11 That's how I rate my movies, five being the best of the best.
00:14 One, I am sparing you a whole lot of pain, don't go.
00:17 Yeah, I'm gonna say, Vicki, I'm kind of surprised
00:19 there was not more horror movies out this season.
00:22 They kind of trickled out, you know?
00:24 And then of course, it's kind of crazy
00:26 that there's actually one coming out on Thanksgiving.
00:28 A really big one coming out on Thanksgiving.
00:30 Yeah, that's, I don't understand.
00:32 'Cause it's called Thanksgiving.
00:33 There it is. But still.
00:34 I love it.
00:35 Okay, this one is actually very interesting
00:37 'cause it was a video game.
00:38 It was a video game, did you ever play it?
00:39 I did not, but my kids did,
00:41 and I didn't really understand,
00:42 like, I didn't know what they were playing.
00:43 It actually came out in 2014,
00:44 and they're still turning out new games.
00:47 So there is a series of games.
00:49 It really, I will say that this movie,
00:52 which they based on the game itself,
00:56 it takes a lot of, some license, you know?
00:58 'Cause you've got, you have to
01:00 when you're turning a game into a movie.
01:02 But it's really interesting
01:04 because it's really made for the fan base,
01:07 I really believe.
01:08 And me, having not played it,
01:10 and not knowing it, and not being age-free,
01:13 but I will still give you my honest opinion on it.
01:15 And make sure people know, it's Five Nights at Freddy's.
01:19 And what it is, is that Freddy's was the name
01:21 of a pizza arcade/parlor
01:25 that was very popular in the '80s.
01:28 And this movie has a very '80s flavor.
01:31 But a bunch of kids went, disappeared from the place,
01:34 and the place ended up being closed down.
01:36 This movie is about a young man suffering from PTSD
01:40 who takes a job as the night watchman
01:42 to make sure that the property doesn't get disturbed.
01:45 Because the big selling factor at this place
01:47 were all these animatronics that they had.
01:50 And so they wanna keep all this stuff protected.
01:53 But the secret of Freddy's is that these animatronics
01:57 come to life at night,
01:59 and they kinda have a murderous agenda.
02:02 So my feeling is, this movie has a few jump scares,
02:07 and it is scary, and it is violent.
02:11 But because it's made for a young demo,
02:14 they kinda consider it like a gateway movie for horror
02:17 for young tweens and teens, yeah.
02:20 So even though there's a lot of violence,
02:22 almost none of it happens on camera.
02:24 - Wow.
02:25 - So, and actually, I didn't realize that was their agenda,
02:28 but I appreciated that because I took
02:31 my 12 and 17-year-old nieces to it,
02:35 and I wasn't so worried about the 17-year-old.
02:37 But I was really worried 'cause it is PG-13, like,
02:40 ooh, I hope I'm not taking this 12-year-old
02:42 to something she shouldn't see.
02:42 There they are at the screening.
02:44 There we are together.
02:46 These little fans loved this movie.
02:50 I'm telling you, they are in cloud nine today.
02:53 The youngest one went to see the movie last night
02:56 at 10 o'clock with her old family
02:58 'cause she couldn't stop talking about it.
03:00 The 17-year-old is going today after school
03:03 with a bunch of her high school friends.
03:05 - Oh my gosh.
03:06 - She can't stop talking about it,
03:07 and they are talking about the fact that it's on Peacock.
03:09 They'll be ordering pizza because the 17-year-old
03:12 already informed her mom that they're gonna be watching it
03:14 all weekend long.
03:15 - Over and over.
03:16 - Over and over, and they did actually give me some reviews.
03:18 - Okay.
03:19 - We recorded the audio there, and it was insanity.
03:21 So I just want, I don't wanna get their reviews wrong.
03:24 But the 12-year-old, Molly, said, "I really love the movie.
03:27 "I think it was five red vines."
03:29 - Wow.
03:30 - And the other one, Giselle, the 17-year-old said,
03:33 "I think it deserves five red vines.
03:35 "It stayed true to the story, and new fans will love it."
03:39 - All right.
03:39 - So that's them.
03:40 I give it three red vines.
03:42 It's a decent movie,
03:43 and I think it's a great family horror movie.
03:46 And when have I ever said that?
03:48 That doesn't happen very often.
03:48 - No, and I think also what's really great is that, again,
03:52 it's those kids who grew up with the game
03:55 are now gonna watch it, and now it's a big thing.
03:55 - They grew up with it, and they were crazy about it.
03:57 I can't tell you how many times I read the word perfect
03:59 on the ride home.
04:00 - I love it.
04:01 - Perfect, perfect, perfect.
04:02 - So there you go.
04:03 All right, so now I wanna switch gears
04:04 and talk about a little independent film
04:06 that's coming out called "Mantis."
04:09 And it is actually written and directed by Conor Ray,
04:12 who is part of my son's Spider-Byte Entertainment team.
04:15 And so this is a short that they actually put together.
04:18 Each year, my son does horror movies for Halloween,
04:20 little short ones.
04:21 And so this is the one they picked right here, "Mantis Do."
04:24 Conor's debut, directed and stuff.
04:27 - I love the retro style.
04:28 - Exactly, retro style.
04:29 And what it's about is actually,
04:31 let's just say you gotta look up what a mantis does.
04:34 And a mantis actually eats its male counterpart.
04:38 I'm gonna leave it at that right there as this.
04:41 But it's great.
04:42 - Talk about a smack down, huh?
04:44 - Comes out on Halloween,
04:46 that's when they launch them
04:47 on spiderbyteentertainment.com projects.
04:51 And then it's going into film festivals.
04:53 So they had to do it and get it ready for a film festival.
04:55 So they have the shortcut that goes in film festival,
04:58 and then the long version will be online.
05:00 - And that, a film festival,
05:02 is your springboard for everything else.
05:04 - Yes, and so I'm very proud of my son
05:06 and his team on this one,
05:07 and Conor for his first time writing
05:09 and directing a movie in my son's time.
05:10 - So exciting.
05:11 - And I get to announce right now that with this,
05:14 my son's new short that he's doing called "Skins"
05:18 has been fully funded by Marlon Williams.
05:21 - Whoa.
05:22 - So Marlon Williams actually is executive producer.
05:24 - Breaking news, that's amazing.
05:25 - Breaking news is executive producer
05:27 in helping him with his next short film
05:29 that will lead into a feature film.
05:31 So this is good.
05:32 So please go support, of course, local films.
05:34 Go support the movies that we have here.
05:36 It's very important right now, especially with the strike on.
05:38 - Support Brad's son?
05:38 - So my son, Tanner, so and his team.
05:40 - That's wonderful, wonderful.
05:42 - So all right.
05:42 (upbeat music)
05:45 (upbeat music)
05:48 (upbeat music)
05:50 (upbeat music)
