00:00 The NFL trade deadline is coming up.
00:02 We've got some buyers, some sellers, Cowboys owner,
00:06 Jerry Jones says he's going shopping.
00:09 What are some of the rumors that you're hearing?
00:11 - Yeah, Jerry says he's going shopping,
00:13 but only if you call him.
00:14 - Okay.
00:15 - And of course, what he means is call the Cowboys.
00:17 And one more, of course, that's ridiculous.
00:20 And I can't believe that the national media
00:24 is falling for this.
00:25 And some people are chastising for, leave him alone.
00:28 It's not true.
00:29 Never in the history of sports trades
00:32 has a team gotten away with saying,
00:34 we are absolutely interested in trading.
00:36 But only if you call us.
00:39 Doesn't even make any sense.
00:41 I do know where it comes from.
00:44 The late great Bob Ackles was a Cowboy executive
00:46 when the Joneses took over.
00:48 And he's passed away since.
00:50 And he was very astute at contracts and negotiations.
00:54 And had a very frugal approach.
00:57 There's a pre-salary cap now when being frugal mattered.
01:00 There's no such thing really now.
01:02 And Bob Ackles took Stephen Jones under his wing
01:04 and taught him in contract negotiations,
01:09 the first side that picks up the phone loses.
01:12 - Yeah, interesting.
01:13 - Okay, and it's kind of like buying a car, right?
01:15 When you go to buy a car,
01:16 don't get suckered into him saying,
01:19 well, how much you got to pay?
01:21 Make him start.
01:23 Well, maybe that's in Jerry's head here.
01:25 That I don't want to be the one who starts it
01:27 because then I'll lose negotiations.
01:29 - But there's so many teams right now in the NFL
01:31 that are waiting for phone calls.
01:33 That you just wonder, well, somebody's got to pick up.
01:35 - And you can't wait.
01:36 You can't watch what the Philadelphia Eagles do
01:39 and say, well, they're very aggressive.
01:42 We'll just wait and see.
01:43 How will you know if Derrick Henry's,
01:46 how would you know what is the trade cost on Derrick Henry?
01:49 If you don't call, how do you know what the trade cost is
01:53 on the quarterback, Johnson in Chicago?
01:56 If you don't call the Bears?
01:58 They, by the way, they're in contract negotiations with him.
02:00 What if those negotiations fall through?
02:02 How will you know?
02:03 You're gonna wait for Ian Rappaport to report it on Twitter
02:06 when you can just pick up the phone?
02:08 No disrespect to Ian Rappaport, who does a great job.
02:11 We can go right down the line of guys.
02:13 The Denver Broncos are in fire sale mode.
02:15 - Absolutely.
02:16 - How do you know which guys they want to sell
02:18 and how much they want to sell them for
02:19 and what their contract situation is
02:21 and whether or not the Broncos will pick up
02:23 some of the tab on their contract,
02:24 not to mention what kind of guy is he?
02:27 How do you know any of those things
02:29 by just sitting in your office
02:31 with your feet up on your desk?
02:33 It's Jerry's approach, his stated approach,
02:36 is not the way they're going to do it.
02:38 In fact, I'll say this right now, we're in the building.
02:40 The Cowboys are already on the phone.
02:42 - Right, so it's more of a PR move than a national move.
02:45 - Yes, it's a strange, fun radio PR statement to say,
02:50 "Uh, Mr. NFL, we ain't calling you, but--"
02:55 - You can call us.
02:57 - It's funny and it's weird and it's meaningless
03:00 and it's baloney.
03:01 (laughing)
03:03 - I've heard somebody say baloney a lot.
