00:00 device Timothy is strapped to is my personal favorite. I call it the rack.
00:05 Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the most
00:10 twisted and shocking brutal torture scenes in horror movies.
00:14 The trick is not to go too far.
00:15 Number 10. Annie Hobbles Paul. Misery. Based on Stephen King's novel of the
00:21 same name, Misery stars an Oscar-winning Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes.
00:26 Now you're alive and you can write more books. Oh Paul, I've read everything of
00:32 yours. The misery novels. I know them all by heart. All eight of them. I love them so.
00:38 Annie is a disturbed woman who kidnaps writer Paul Sheldon and forces him to
00:43 rewrite the ending to his popular Misery series. After learning that Paul is, quite
00:48 understandably, planning his escape, she brings in a sledgehammer and a block of
00:52 wood to set things right. I realize you just need more time. Eventually you'll
00:57 come to accept the idea of being here. Annie proceeds to hobble Paul, which
01:01 means placing the block between his ankles and breaking them with the
01:04 sledgehammer. Annie, whatever you think I'm not doing, please don't do it. It's an
01:11 absolutely sickening sight which is made all the worse by the excellent acting of
01:15 James Caan. Those screams of pain are something else. God I love you.
01:20 Number 9. Frank's Chains - Hellraiser. Clive Barker burst onto the scene with
01:25 Hellraiser, a classic that made Pinhead a cultural icon.
01:30 Explorers in the further regions are experienced. Demons to some, angels to others.
01:38 Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites, a group of extra-dimensional creatures
01:42 who inflict pain for pleasure. Frank has escaped the Cenobites and in the
01:46 grisly climax of the film, they come to collect with the help of some chains.
01:51 They emerge from the dark and graphically pierce Frank's skin. They
01:58 eventually string him up like a flayed fish before quite literally tearing him
02:01 to pieces. The makeup work is exceptional and the image has become one of the most
02:06 iconic in all of horror. Number 8. Kana's Eyeball - Hostel. Eli Roth's cult
02:13 classic makes Saw look like an episode of Bluey.
02:18 Coming on the heels of the 2004 original, Hostel took the now popular
02:22 abuse genre and ramped the visuals up to 11. It follows a group of American
02:27 tourists who are viciously mutilated for fun. The movie is filled to the brim with
02:31 grotesque visuals, including what happens to poor Kana.
02:36 "Tomorrow I go." "Okay, because we may go too. Do you want to go to the train with us?"
02:43 Paxton stumbles across Kana being attacked and she is, let's just say, not
02:47 seeing very well out of her right eye. The scene only gets worse from there as
02:54 Paxton attempts a little surgery to save Kana. We commend the effort but we don't
02:59 think a pair of dirty scissors is the right tool for the job. Number 7. Nick is
03:04 turned into a wishbone, Bone Tomahawk. Sometimes you think you've seen
03:08 everything that the horror genre has to offer and then along comes Bone Tomahawk.
03:12 "How many of them do you think there are?" "It won't matter, you have no chance against any number of them."
03:17 A unique Western horror, the film sees a small group attempting to save a local
03:21 woman from a violent group of cannibals. They are eventually taken to the
03:24 cannibals cave and made to watch the brief murder of Deputy Nick.
03:31 We don't know who comes up with this stuff but it's certainly an original
03:35 death scene. Let's just say Nick is turned into a human wishbone.
03:41 "Don't do this, please!"
03:45 "Nick, wake up!" And that's after the torment. The whole scene only lasts about a minute
03:51 but it will stay with you forever. Number 6. Brent's entire experience, The
03:57 Loved Ones. Don't let the title fool you, there is nothing loving about this movie.
04:02 In fact, it's pretty darn depraved. Brent is asked to the prom by Lola Stone but
04:07 he turns her down so he can go with his girlfriend Holly. "Will you go to the dance with me?"
04:11 "Sorry Lola, I'm done with Holly. Sorry."
04:21 Well, Lola isn't one to take no for an answer. She kidnaps Brent and subjects
04:26 him to horrific treatment like wrecking his vocal cords with bleach and piercing
04:31 his feet with knives. "Is it finger-lickin' good?"
04:36 "Is it finger-lickin' good?" But the worst comes later when Lola attempts to
04:48 lobotomize Brent with a drill in some boiling water.
04:53 We don't see much of the drilling itself but the sound design tells you
05:00 all you need to know. It's revolting, it's both crunchy and squishy and it
05:05 certainly paints a vivid picture. Number 5. The Circle of Blood, Sallow or the
05:10 120 Days of Sodom. One of the most controversial films ever made, Sallow
05:15 concerns the horrific treatment of kidnapped victims in World War II.
05:18 "Bourgeoisie does not recoil from slaughter, though the victims be their loving sons and daughters."
05:24 While some argue that the film contains important sociopolitical themes,
05:28 others regard it as little more than a prolonged exercise in patience testing.
05:32 While the entire film is disgusting, it's in the fourth segment, rightfully
05:36 titled Circle of Blood, where things get really bad. "What are you going to do to me?"
05:41 "We'll talk about that tomorrow. Yes, many decisions await us tomorrow."
05:46 Director Pierre Paolo Pasolini pushes both boundaries and buttons and even to
05:51 this day the segment remains incredibly difficult to watch. All manner of
05:55 violence is on display, much of its stomach churning and sickening.
06:00 Maybe the themes are important but the film's critics certainly have a point.
06:11 This is nasty, bordering on needlessly gratuitous.
06:16 4. Kakihara and Suzuki - Itchy the Killer
06:18 And speaking of controversial films, let's talk about Takashi Miike's Itchy the Killer.
06:23 It follows the brutal adventures of Kakihara, a sadomasochistic Yakuza
06:28 enforcer on the hunt for his missing boss.
06:31 His investigation leads him to a member of a rival clan named Suzuki.
06:45 It's not like Kakihara invites him out to coffee and politely inquires about
06:49 the whereabouts of his boss.
07:03 Nope, he strings up Suzuki using a number of steel hooks and makes everything worse
07:07 with the help of a skewer and a pot of boiling oil.
07:16 Kakihara is clearly having the time of his life, but we aren't.
07:21 3. The Rack - Saw 3 You know, it's funny. Of all the gore seen
07:25 throughout the Saw franchise, it's a relatively bloodless device that has gone
07:30 down in movie infamy. It's called The Rack and it can be seen near the end of
07:34 Saw 3.
07:41 The victim is poor Timothy, the drunk driver who accidentally killed Jeff's son.
07:46 Timothy's limbs are encased in a large steel device, whose individual components
07:50 slowly turn in a circle.
08:02 This means that all of Timothy's limbs are twisted one by one before his neck is
08:06 eventually broken.
08:08 Timothy's screams of torment are excruciating, as is the nauseating sound design
08:13 that accompanies each snapping limb.
08:15 Most of us know how bad a broken bone hurts, but we couldn't imagine what this
08:19 feels like.
08:23 2. Anna Is Skinned Alive - Martyrs Remember that scene from Game of Thrones
08:32 where Ramsay rips off a little piece of Theon's finger?
08:39 Well, Theon got off easy compared to Anna. The young woman is kidnapped by a cult
08:44 who, through some nonsensical religious guise, inflicts horrific pain on their
08:49 captives.
09:02 The entire climax of the film is devoted to Anna's abuse at the hands of the cult,
09:07 and it ends with her being flayed alive.
09:09 Anna does not die from her traumatic injuries, at least not right away, and she is
09:13 forced to remain conscious, sand skin and with her muscles completely exposed.
09:18 It's repugnant stuff, and it resulted in a lot of controversy with various rating
09:22 boards.
09:40 1. Asami's Work - Audition Widely regarded as a classic, Takashi Miike's
09:46 audition contains one of the most iconic scenes in all of horror cinema.
10:04 A brilliantly constructed film, Audition begins innocently enough, with widower
10:09 Shigeharu finding a new romantic partner through playful auditions. It's through
10:13 this that he meets Asami, a deranged woman who playfully toys with Shigeharu. Only,
10:18 her toys are the likes of paralytic agents, needles and a wire saw. It's every bit as
10:23 horrible as it sounds, with Asami using these tools in the most hideous ways possible.
10:44 The sequence earned wide acclaim, especially for how it was paced within the
10:47 context of the film, but acclaim or not, it sure is gross.
10:52 Did any of these make you squirm? Let us know in the comments.
