00:00 asked me why I would want to adopt a broken dog.
00:04 I was ready to adopt my first rescue dog,
00:06 and it just so happened that the puppy was born deaf.
00:09 He is so adorable!
00:11 I immediately thought of my nephew, who was also born deaf.
00:15 And it really sparked a fire within me.
00:19 It really changed my entire life's mindset.
00:22 One word, and one man's smoke.
00:25 I realized that Cole had a very, very special way with children,
00:28 and a very special way with humans in general.
00:30 I knew that I wanted to pursue therapy dog training for him.
00:33 I wanted to change the way people think about differences.
00:36 I could squeeze you forever!
00:38 I honestly, in my heart, believe Cole knows that he was born to do this job.
00:46 He saw me grab his therapy vest and hop out of the front door.
00:50 I would never do anything that I thought Cole wasn't interested in doing.
00:55 There's that smile right there.
00:58 And it is a profound advantage to be in an elementary school therapy dog,
01:04 and to be deaf, because he can have 100% of his focus
01:08 where he wants it on any given moment.
01:11 When Cole is ready to take a nap, there is no stopping Cole from taking his nap.
01:19 It's such an advantage that he's born the way he was.
01:23 [music]
01:27 Five days a week, Cole is a full-time therapy dog in an elementary school.
01:32 And then when we leave school a couple days a week,
01:34 we go and we visit the hospice patients that we volunteer with.
01:37 And then Cole is a mascot at a local veterans home
01:41 where we spend all of our holidays and weekly visits.
01:45 Then we do the traveling school programs
01:47 where we talk about acceptance and disability awareness.
01:50 [dog whining]
01:53 It's a very, very humbling experience.
01:56 This is our sixth school year together as a team.
01:59 And when I say that every day there is a moment that we share with a child
02:04 or a student, hospice patient, whatever it may be,
02:07 that makes us realize why we are doing this.
02:11 And it's those moments that really solidifies it all.
02:15 [music]
02:28 It's amazing how a little deaf shelter pit bull puppy
02:33 can bring as much joy to people as he's bringing, young and old.
