00:00 Lexi, you are in your realm.
00:02 You are like home 'cause you are a broad,
00:05 you grew up on Broadway singing.
00:07 So what's going on down there?
00:09 - I am, Brad.
00:12 So this is so exciting because I consider this place
00:15 like a second home.
00:16 My husband has musically directed here.
00:18 It's an amazing, beautiful theater right here in Glendale.
00:22 And we have the artistic director, Curtis Overby,
00:25 here with us, who's gonna tell us a little bit more
00:27 about the Arizona Broadway Theater.
00:29 So Curtis, thank you so much for chatting with us,
00:31 first of all, but you guys have an amazing theater here.
00:34 Tell us a little bit about the history.
00:36 - Yeah, so we opened up in 2005
00:37 and we actually weren't in this building.
00:39 We were actually in the tent, is what we like to call it,
00:42 right across the Peoria Sports Complex with Anything Goes.
00:47 And luckily and fortunately, 19 years later,
00:50 we are here and thriving
00:53 and doing really great performances, I think.
00:56 - Oh, absolutely.
00:57 Well, this is, like you said, your 19th season.
01:00 That's so exciting.
01:01 And you're starting off with a classic,
01:04 "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
01:06 Tell me about that.
01:07 - Yes, so we had it on the schedule before that,
01:10 you know, that naughty thing, that COVID thing.
01:14 We had it on our schedule and we just,
01:16 after talking to the executive producer
01:18 and the artistic producer, we were like,
01:19 we have to bring it back.
01:21 We have to make sure that we give the folks
01:23 this wonderful classic show.
01:24 And so that's what we did.
01:26 And we have wonderful cast, some from New York,
01:28 some from local talent,
01:30 and they are doing such an incredible job.
01:33 - And I love that you fly some people in.
01:36 You fly in the amazing talent
01:38 that they have in New York City,
01:39 but you utilize the amazing local talent
01:42 here in Arizona as well.
01:43 - Absolutely.
01:45 I'd say most of the time it's like a 70/30 split, you know.
01:49 We like to bring people in, like you said,
01:51 but we also like to utilize the talent pool
01:53 that we have here.
01:54 We have some incredible talent here in Phoenix
01:56 and we love to use those people.
01:58 - Yeah, oh, absolutely.
01:59 Yeah, get the locals in here.
02:01 Everybody, you know, we got plenty of talent here in Phoenix
02:03 but you guys don't just do
02:04 these full-scale theater productions.
02:07 You also have concerts.
02:08 You have some incredible holiday things coming up.
02:11 Tell me a little bit about that stuff.
02:12 - For sure.
02:13 We have on Monday nights,
02:15 the main stage productions are dark on Mondays,
02:18 like most theaters.
02:20 And then we have some concerts on Monday,
02:23 which are outside gigs.
02:24 And then we have our New Year's Eve extravaganza.
02:27 And of course our holidays starting up in November.
02:30 So, yeah.
02:30 - So much good stuff going on.
02:32 Well guys, make sure you stick around
02:33 because we are gonna go and get a little preview,
02:36 a little taste of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat
02:39 coming up next.
02:40 So Brad, back to you guys.
02:41 Stay tuned.
02:42 - I hope you're performing with them, Lexi, are you?
02:45 - You know what?
02:49 I might get on stage.
02:49 I don't know.
02:50 Do you have an extra Technicolor coat for me?
02:52 - I'm on it.
02:53 - All right, I love it.
02:54 - Perfect, done.
02:55 I'll be up there.
02:56 - All right, we'll see you in just a little bit.
02:56 So I love it.
02:58 Hey, let's toss it back out to Lexi,
03:00 who is with the Arizona Broadway.
03:02 - Hey Brad.
03:06 Yeah, I am so excited to be standing here
03:09 with two of the stars of their upcoming production
03:12 of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
03:15 So we have Andrew here, who is Joseph,
03:18 and Jasmine, who is the narrator.
03:20 So Andrew, tell me a little bit about what it's like
03:22 to play this iconic role,
03:23 especially because you're in from New York City, right?
03:25 - Yes, that's correct.
03:26 Yes.
03:27 It's amazing.
03:29 Following in someone like Donny Osmond's shoes,
03:31 it's such an honor to get to do this eight shows a week.
03:34 And here on the Arizona Broadway Theater stage,
03:36 it's even so much more fun.
03:38 - And this is the one and only Technicolor Dreamcoat, yes?
03:41 - Yes, it sure is.
03:42 - Well, it looks beautiful.
03:43 I love that.
03:44 And it definitely gets shown off in the show,
03:46 along with all these other amazing costumes
03:48 that you see up here on the stage.
03:50 And Jasmine, you are local, correct?
03:52 - I am, yes.
03:53 - That's so exciting.
03:54 So tell me for you, the narrator is such an iconic role.
03:58 Kind of, what is the narrator's role in the show?
04:01 - Me and the director, Ken Urso,
04:04 we kind of wanted to make her a little bit more involved
04:06 in other versions.
04:07 She's usually kind of stands off to the side
04:09 and tells the story as a narrator does.
04:12 But to make it more exciting for me and the audience,
04:15 doing this eight times a week,
04:16 we wanted her to be a little bit more involved.
04:18 So I tell the story of the show,
04:21 but I also kind of act out with the characters
04:24 and I get to interact with the kids on stage.
04:26 Not here today.
04:27 It's too early for them.
04:28 They're in school, but it's a blast.
04:31 We have definitely taken it into our own hands
04:33 and molded her into just a more exciting
04:35 kind of omnipresent character in the show.
04:38 - I love that.
04:39 Okay, so Andrew,
04:40 there are so many different costumes up here.
04:42 I mean, I see a police officer.
04:44 I mean, we have wigs.
04:46 We have a chef back here.
04:48 Kind of give me a little overview really quickly
04:50 for those who haven't seen the show.
04:51 - So it is about 12 brothers.
04:55 Joseph is the favorite son of Jacob
04:58 and basically he is sold because he's the favorite
05:01 and the brothers are jealous.
05:03 And I think you have to come see the show
05:06 to find out what happens in the end.
05:07 I don't wanna give too much away.
05:08 - I like that.
05:09 I like that.
05:10 We're not gonna give too much away here,
05:11 but the show runs until November 4th.
05:13 You can get your tickets at azbroadway.org
05:16 because you do not want to miss the show.
05:18 There's so much great stuff coming around.
05:21 You can obviously sit, you can have dinner,
05:23 you can have a cocktail.
05:24 There's a beautiful bar out there
05:25 and just enjoy this gorgeous, iconic show.
05:28 So, all right guys, I know we're going in a little early,
05:30 but I wanna make sure we get the full experience.
05:32 So why don't you go ahead and get in your places
05:35 and let's get this performance on the road.
05:38 Let's do it guys.
