Sir Keir Starmer has taken aim at the government's delay to ban no-fault evictions, known as Section 21s. The Labour leader raised the case of a mother and her two children who were kicked out of their home of eight years with a no-fault eviction notice, adding: “Despite his Government's pledge to scrap no-fault evictions, this week the Prime Minister crumbled to the landlords on his backbenches and killed the policy.” Mr Sunak said the Government has taken “significant action” to help renters. 00:00 >>Mr Osborne: Annalisa and her two children lived in their home for eight years. In May,
00:07 they were kicked out with a no-fault eviction notice. Despite his Government's pledge
00:13 to scrap no-fault evictions, this week the Prime Minister crumbled to the landlords on
00:18 his own Back Benches and killed the policy.
00:21 >>Mr Osborne: We have taken significant action to help renters like Annalisa and others.
00:26 We have capped holding deposits at one week, we have protected tenants from rip-off tenancy
00:31 fees, delivered almost half a million affordable homes for rent, halved the number of percentage
00:38 of substandard homes in the private rented sector and strengthened local authority enforcement
00:42 powers, because this Government are delivering for renters. But we are also trying to ensure
00:48 that the new generation can buy their own home. Perhaps the right hon. Gentleman can
00:51 explain to Annalisa and thousands of millions of others why, when we brought forward plans
00:56 to unlock 100,000 new homes, he stood in the way of that.
01:00 >>Mr Osborne: I am sure that Annalisa and her children, who have now been evicted, will
01:03 take great comfort from that non-answer. Emma and her teenage son saw their mortgage go
01:10 up by more than a quarter. They may think this is funny, but this is real life. After
01:17 16 years of dutifully paying their mortgage, for the first time she is having to choose
01:23 between new shoes for her son and putting the heating on.
